Discovery of Novel, Potent, and Specific Cell-Death Inducers in the Jurkat Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Cell Line

    No full text
The limited clinical efficacy of many cancer therapeutics has initiated intense research efforts toward the discovery of novel chemical entities in this field. In this study, 31 hit candidates were selected from nearly 800000 database compounds in a ligand-based virtual screening campaign. In turn, three of these hits were found to have (sub)micromolar potencies in proliferation assays with the Jurkat acute lymphatic leukemic cell line. In this assay, the three hits were found to exhibit higher potency than clinically tested cell-death inducers (GDC-0152, AT-406, and birinapant). Importantly, antiproliferative activity toward non-cancer peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was found to be marginal. Further biological characterization demonstrated the cell-death-inducing properties of these compounds. Biological testing of hit congeners excluded a nonspecific, toxic effect of the novel structures. Altogether, these findings may have profound relevance for the development of clinical candidates in tumor therapy

Luck also is well-known in Poland, as the author or the scientific editor of several books in the field of history of psychology. In the first part of the article the short presentation of his scientific career and his scientific achievements are demonstrated. The second part comprises the analysis of his opinions in the scope of social psychology. Helmut E. Luck was the one of pioneers in psychology, who paid attention to social positive phenomena or social positive behaviors. In the field of history of psychology, H.E.Luck made the contribution to methodological analysis of psychological ideas in history, preferring the model which underlines connection of psychology with culture and at the same time creates the opportunity to analysis of biographical plots. The article also shows unquestionable and unusually merits of Luck’s in popularization of knowledge about history of psychology. The article presents the figure of Helmut E. Helmut Schelsky e la sociologia come "storiografia sociale del presente"”

    No full text
In the first part of the essay, the Author discusses the reasons why the relationship between sociology and history may be advantageous for both disciplinary fields. In the second part, he wonders in which sense, between the fifties and the seventies, empirical social research could be taken by Helmut Schelsky as a kind of "social history of present times": This formula, he stresses, was at that time interpreted as a sympton of a rigidly positivistic view of social phenomena. Agreeing, in the third part, with such criticism, in view of the technocratic position held by Schelsky in the mentioned period, the Authorgoes on, in the final section of the article, to conclude that no true consideration for history has ever taken place in Schelsky's sociological conception

    No full text
In this work we deal with music, both from the composition as well as from the performance viewpoints, in which the potentials of the relationship between performer and musical instrument are taken to limit situations. This is done with an analysis of the following elements: specific and intrinsic characteristics of an instrument; interaction between performer and instrument; mechanical elements of interference in this relationship. We will approach, specially, works of Helmut Lachenmann, Iannis Xenakis, Brian Ferneyhough, Aaron Cassidy and Simon Steen-Andersen. Recent musical pieces of the author of this work will also be mentioned

Erinnerte Wirklichkeit. Polen in der außenpolitischen Konzeption Helmut Kohls

In this paper, the author presents a brief description of the place and role Poland’s in the memoires of the former German chancellor Helmut Kohl. Although, at the first view, it can be assumed that Poland and the Polish politicians don’t appear too often in Kohl’s report, it could be shown after a closer analysis that Kohl refers many times to both of them. Poland aroused a special interest, but also irritation, of the chancellor around 1990 as Germany was re-united and the negotiations regarding the common border between Poland and Germany were carried out, which is depicted in this pape

    Tra Darwin e Habermas. Sul caso e l'"indisponibilità" dell'individuo

    No full text
This Essay is a follow up of a previous contribution to the study of some consequences of Darwin's thought in Moral Philosophy (Darwinismo morale, Pisa, 2002). Habermas' apprehension of a darwinian liberalism in our age is disputed, but the author agrees with him about the necessity of philosophically envisaging one important implication of contemporary technological development —namely, the implication of biotechnological possession, after the notion of «Körper haben» put forward by Helmut Plessner. This leads the author to reconsider a natural prerequisite of our idea of individual freedom (a prerequisite pretty much similar to the darwinian concept of chance), i. e. the asymmetry in responsibility between parents and their offspring, an asymmetry which is obviously affected by the possibility of pre–determining at least some features of it

ORCID 0000-0003-1593-7202. Mikhail V. Strelets – professor of Department of Humanitarian Disciplines, Brest State Technical University (Brest), e-mail: [email protected]Целью рецензии является выявление научной новизны в монографии профессора Череповецкого государственного университета Бориса Валентиновича Петелина «Гельмут Коль: быть немцем. The author of this review set out to reveal the scientific novelty in the monograph by the professor of Cherepovets State University Boris Valentinovich Petelin «Helmut Kohl: to be a German. Biography pages». The reviewer sees every reason to believe that his Russian colleague, for the first time in post-Soviet German studies, carried out a systemic reconstruction of the history of German politics by the sixth chancellor of the FRG, Helmut Kohl. The monograph shows what needs to be learned from Kohl by the modern heads of state. It is about solving strategic tasks not by improvisation, but with a clear awareness of the goal, with a professional staff of employees

"Irresponsible lending" with a better informed lender

    No full text
We present a simple model of personal finance in which an incumbent lender has an information advantage vis-a-vis both potential competitors and households. In order to extract more consumer surplus, a lender with sufficient market power may engage in "irresponsible"lending, approving credit even if this is knowingly against a household’s best interest. Unless rival lenders are equally well informed, competition may reduce welfare. This holds, in particular, if less informed rivals can free ride on the incumbent’s superior screening ability

Self in third person: agency and narrative in Beim Häuten der Zwiebel and Die Blechtrommel by Günter Grass

    No full text
Ao confrontar ficção e autobiografia, o estudo investiga como as estratégias narrativas impactam a responsabilização do sujeito diante da históriaThis dissertation examines the configuration of narrative agency in two works by Günter Grass: Die Blechtrommel (1959) and Beim Häuten der Zwiebel (2006). It starts from the hypothesis that in Grass\'s debut novel, there is a narrative strategy of disattribution, in which the protagonist evades historical agency through shifts between first- and third-person narration. In contrast, the autobiographical work reveals an ambivalent attempt to refigure the author\'s narrative identity, aiming to acknowledge and assume ethical responsibility for his past involvement with the Nazi regime. Drawing on narratological and ethical theory--especially Paul Ricoeur\'s concept of the self--the study proposes a hermeneutics of action grounded in literary analysis. By comparing fiction and autobiography, the dissertation explores how narrative techniques shape the subject\'s ethical engagement with histor
