    Support properties of super-Brownian motions with spatially dependent branching rate

    AbstractWe consider a critical finite measure-valued super-Brownian motion X=(Xt,Pμ) in Rd, whose log-Laplace equation is associated with the semilinear equation (∂/∂t)u=12Δu−ku2, where the coefficient k(x)>0 for the branching rate varies in space, and is continuous and bounded. Suppose that suppμ is compact. We say that X has the compact support property, if Pμ⋃0⩽s⩽tsuppXsisbounded=1 for every t>0, and we say that the global support of X is compact if Pμ⋃0⩽s<∞suppXsisbounded=1. We prove criteria for the compact support property and the compactness of the global support. If there exists a constant M>0 such that k(x)⩾exp(−M||x||2) as ||x||→∞ then X possesses the compact support property, whereas if there exist constant β>2 such that k(x)⩽exp(−||x||β) as ||x||→∞ then X does not have the compact support property. For the global support, we prove that if k(x)=||x||−β(0⩽β<∞) for sufficiently large ||x||, then the maximum decay order of k for the global support being compact is different for d=1, d=2 and d⩾3: it is O(||x||−3) in dimension one, O(||x||−2(log||x||)−3) in dimension two, and O(||x||−2) in dimensions three or above

    The strangeness s = +1 pentaquark states qqqq (q) over bar and the six-quark quark clusters qqqqqq are investigated. By analyzing the inherent nodal structure of the systems, the low-lying states are picked out. By comparing the accessibility of the nodeless states and referring the presently obtained K-N interaction potential, we propose that the quantum numbers of the lowest-lying pentaquark state Theta+ may be (J(P), T) = ((2)/(1),0) and L = 1.     Hand, foot and mouth disease: spatiotemporal transmission and climate

    BACKGROUND: The Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease (HFMD) is the most common infectious disease in China, its total incidence being around 500,000~1,000,000 cases per year. The composite space-time disease variation is the result of underlining attribute mechanisms that could provide clues about the physiologic and demographic determinants of disease transmission and also guide the appropriate allocation of medical resources to control the disease.METHODS AND FINDINGS: HFMD cases were aggregated into 1456 counties and during a period of 11 months. Suspected climate attributes to HFMD were recorded monthly at 674 stations throughout the country and subsequently interpolated within 1456 × 11 cells across space-time (same as the number of HFMD cases) using the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) method while taking into consideration the relevant uncertainty sources. The dimensionalities of the two datasets together with the integrated dataset combining the two previous ones are very high when the topologies of the space-time relationships between cells are taken into account. Using a self-organizing map (SOM) algorithm the dataset dimensionality was effectively reduced into 2 dimensions, while the spatiotemporal attribute structure was maintained. 16 types of spatiotemporal HFMD transmission were identified, and 3-4 high spatial incidence clusters of the HFMD types were found throughout China, which are basically within the scope of the monthly climate (precipitation) types.CONCLUSIONS: HFMD propagates in a composite space-time domain rather than showing a purely spatial and purely temporal variation. There is a clear relationship between HFMD occurrence and climate. HFMD cases are geographically clustered and closely linked to the monthly precipitation types of the region. The occurrence of the former depends on the later.<br/

In this paper, we study the nonlinear elliptic equation (12)Δu = k(x)uα(x) on D, where α ϵ (1,2] is a constant. First, we give explicit expressions in terms of super-Brownian motions for positive solutions of the above equation with the boundary conditions: u∥∂D = 0 and lim‖x‖→∞(u(x)/log(‖x‖)) = c (0 ⩽ c < ⩾ ∞). Then we give a complete classification of all positive solutions of the above equation with the boundary condition u∥∂D= 0 when k behaves like ‖x‖−2(log(‖x‖))−l near ∞ for some constant l > 1 + α. In the one-dimensional case, we also have similar results

    Electrochemical method for analyzing intracellular redox activity changes of the etoposide-induced apoptosis in HL-60 cells

    An electrochemical method for analyzing HL-60 cell apoptosis (programmed cell death) induced by etoposide was examined. The cyclic voltammetric response of HL-60 cells was observed over the life-cycle of apoptotic cells. It showed that the oxidation peak current of cells decreased with etoposide treatment. The decrease of peak current of HL-60 cells appeared at 2 mu g ml(-1) etoposide treatment after 24 h and became significant at 20 mu g ml(-1), which occurred before the typical changes of cell morphology and DNA contents caused by apoptosis. Flow cytometric-DNA (FCM-DNA) analysis revealed that 10.5-20% of the cells were apoptotic while the peak current decreased from 1.8 to 0.4 mu A after 2-4 h of treatment with 200 mu g ml(-1) etoposide. Changes of cyclic voltammetric response during the early stages of apoptosis are attributed to changes in the intracellular redox reactivity of HL-60 cells. The electrochemical responses of living cells can be used for probing intracellular redox activity-of initiation of apoptosis and analyzing the whole process of apoptosis.     AbstractIn this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the group of graph automorphisms of the X-join of {Yx}x∈X to be the “natural” ones, i.e., those that are obtained by first permuting the Yx according to a permutation of subscripts by an automorphism of X and then performing an arbitrary automorphism of each Yx. This simultaneously solves and generalizes the problem of giving necessary and sufficient conditions for the group of the lexicographic product of two graphs to be the wreath product of the groups of the factor graphs. This problem was introduced by Harary and partial solutions had been given by Sabidussi and the author
