Spherical rolling robot for planetary surface exploration
With today’s technology, robots with navigation and vision abilities are often developed to aid security surveillance and rescue missions. Among those, spherical rolling robot (SRR), is an invention based on a concept of producing and controlling the rolling motion of a sphere. Over the years, SRRs have shown promising results. Generally they are able to navigate on most kinds of surfaces. They have many advantageous characteristics that make them reliable and efficient in navigational tasks. What makes them stand out from others? It is their spherical body shape. Why? Firstly, a sphere is easy to be moved and always remains at the same shape once moved hence it can provide a holonomic system. Holonomic system is ideal for navigational robot as it enables the robot to be always at starting position regardless of body orientation. Given such agility, SRRs can access into more kinds of human-unfriendly environment. Besides that, internal hardware is well protected from external physical disturbances by the spherical shell. This makes SRR very durable. These have motivated many to focus on developing spherical bodied robots including the author of this report. This report introduced the design and development of an SRR which uses a 1-DOF internal pendulum mechanism to roll forward and backward, under closed loop control system. Dynamic analyses of the system and real time simulation results have also been demonstrated in this report.Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering

OpenDR: An Open Toolkit for Enabling High Performance, Low Footprint Deep Learning for Robotics
Existing Deep Learning (DL) frameworks typically do not provide ready-to-use solutions for robotics, where very specific learning, reasoning, and embodiment problems exist. Their relatively steep learning curve and the different methodologies employed by DL compared to traditional approaches, along with the high complexity of DL models, which often leads to the need of employing specialized hardware accelerators, further increase the effort and cost needed to employ DL models in robotics. Also, most of the existing DL methods follow a static inference paradigm, as inherited by the traditional computer vision pipelines, ignoring active perception, which can be employed to actively interact with the environment in order to increase perception accuracy. In this paper, we present the Open Deep Learning Toolkit for Robotics (OpenDR). OpenDR aims at developing an open, non-proprietary, efficient, and modular toolkit that can be easily used by robotics companies and research institutions to efficiently develop and deploy AI and cognition technologies to robotics applications, providing a solid step towards addressing the aforementioned challenges. We also detail the design choices, along with an abstract interface that was created to overcome these challenges. This interface can describe various robotic tasks, spanning beyond traditional DL cognition and inference, as known by existing frameworks, incorporating openness, homogeneity and robotics-oriented perception e.g., through active perception, as its core design principles.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Learning & Autonomous ControlJoining and Mechanical Behavio
Investigation of femicide in Turkey: modeling time series of counts
This study aims to reveal the relationship between the number of femicide in Turkey, the female unemployment rate, the male unemployment rate, and inflation. The contribution of the study to the literature is that it estimates the relationship between femicides and macroeconomic variables with a method that incorporates the count data. The daTaşet was analyzed by using the INGARCH model, one of the most popular approaches for count time series data. This model is particularly attractive for dealing with serial dependence and over-dispersion. The findings revealed that an increase in the female unemployment rate and a decrease in the male unemployment rate increases the number of femicide. In addition, it was observed that the number of femicide in the previous month had a negative effect on the current month’s number. Increasing the employment rate of women, and women's economic freedom generally, are esŞential factors in reducing femicide. To prevent femicides, policymakers should aim to increase women's employment. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V
Production of Bacillus subtilis soil isolate as biocontrol agent under bioreactor conditions
© 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature. This study aimed to investigate the biomass production of Bacillus subtilis in flask and bioreactor conditions. It is necessary to carry the culture from the shake flask to the pH, air, temperature and stirring controlled bioreactor in order to reduce the working time and increase the production efficiency and product quality. In this study, Bacillus was isolated from soil and grown under flask and bioreactor conditions as biocontrol agent against Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium oxysporum. In this process, a pH value of 7.5, 100% O2 saturation, 30% dissolved O2, at the temperature of 37 °C, total flow of 0.1 Lmin−1 and mixing speed of 150 min−1 were preferred for optimal concerning high production yield of B. subtilis in bioreactor. To test whether B. subtilis has antifungal activity on the growth of B. cinerea and F. oxysporum, a dual culture assay in a PDA medium was carried out. Ultimately, high biomass production in a short incubation period by reaching 2.2 µg/mL after 9 h in the bioreactor. It was observed that the bacteria produced in the bioreactor cultivation grew stronger and showed high antifungal activity which resulted 33.33% inhibition percentage against B. cinerea. It was concluded that B. subtilis can be used as a green-fungicide against B. cinerea and F. oxysporum, and bacterial metabolites from B. subtilis could pave the way for the development of next generation green/biopesticides

Altered gut microbiota in patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease: an age–sex matched case–control study
© 2023, The Author(s) under exclusive licence to Belgian Neurological Society. Objective: The investigations related to how gut microbiota changes the brain–gut axis in idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD) attract growing interest. We aimed to determine whether gut microbiota is altered in PD patients and whether non-motor symptoms of PD and disease duration had any relation with alterations of microbiota profiles among patients. Methods: Microbial taxa in stool samples obtained from 84 subjects (42-PD patients and 42-healthy spouses) were analyzed using 16S rRNA amplicon-sequencing. Results: We observed a significant decrease of Firmicutes and a significant increase of Verrucomicrobiota at the phylum level. At the family level, Lactobacillaceae and Akkermansiaceae were significantly increased and Coriobacteriales Incertae Sedis were significantly decreased in the PD patients compared to their healthy spouses. Genus level comparison inferred significant increase in abundance only in Lactobacillus while the abundance of Lachnospiraceae ND3007 group, Tyzzerella, Fusicatenibacter, Eubacterium hallii group and Ruminococcus gauvreauii group were all decreased. We determined that the abundance of Prevotella genus decreased, but not significantly in PD patients. In addition, we found differences in microbiota composition between patients with and without non-motor symptoms. Conclusion: We observed differences in gut microbiota composition between PD patients and their healthy spouses. Our findings suggest that disease duration influenced microbiota composition, which in turn influenced development of non-motor symptoms in PD. This study is the first in terms of both gut microbiota research in Turkish PD patients and the probable effect of microbiota on non-motor symptoms of PD
