RICERCA VISUALE PER LA RIGENERAZIONE URBANA: IL PHOTOVOICE IN UN’ESPERIENZA DI SOCIALLY ENGAGED ART NELLA PERIFERIA A SUD DI BARI
VISUAL RESEARCH APPROACHES FOR URBAN REGENERATION. THE PHOTOVOICE TO ACT IN CARBONARA AND CEGLIE DEL CAMPO, PERIPHERAL AREAS SOUTH OF BARI (REGION OF PUGLIA, ITALY)This paper deals with an application of Photovoice, a participatory method of visual action research, in the framework of the “Community photography and public art for the regeneration of the everyday landscapes of Ceglie del Campo and Carbonara” project, funded by Italian Ministry for Culture in 2019. The work focusses on methodological issues, innovative aspects of “socially engaged art” and operational challenges. Theinitiative takes place in a “hybrid” space and tries to pursue heterogeneous objectives.Raising citizen awareness and promoting research processes aimed at urban and landscape regeneration are objectives that generally disregard artistic practices, which, however, fit well into cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary approaches, and thrive within “spaces of ambiguity”.Keywords: photovoice, photography, creative urban regeneration.
The Photography between Story and Landscape Research
The concept of landscape, promoted by the European Landscape Convention (Florence, 2000), brings significant innovations from both a theoretical point of view and operational actions, methods and policies to be taken, in order to implement the Convention itself. These innovations require integration and disclose new intervention areas for different disciplines among which there is also photography. It may represent a useful tool for not only reading and interpreting the landscape but also for thinking and planning it, discussing about places and approaching inhabitants to their day-to-day landscape. We refer to photography as related to the social sciences. However, it maintains its own specificity for helping to interpret both the material and immaterial component of landscape connected to perception
Agritourism and territorial framework in the northern Salento (Apulia region, Italy)
The Territory Landscape Plan of the Apulia Region (PPTR)focuses on rural areas and agricultural sector, putting them in a holistic local and socio-economic context. This strategy isimplemented through the town-country pact, one of the five local projects proposed by the PPTR. The aim of the research is the study of the context and specificity of agritourism in Ostuni and Fasanocoastal areas (northern Salento), in which natural beauties, such as rural and coastal landscapes, coexist, characterized by ancient olive groves, historical rural houses and charming towns. In particular, the study analyses this rural context by means of the relationship between agritourism and territorial framework in order to check the sustainability of the development processes and their consistency with the programmatic guidelines of the PPTR. Qualitative approacheshas been used, such as semi-structured interviews and photographic material

The Red Palm Weevil in the City of Bari: A First Damage Assessment
Phoenix canariensis Chabaud (Canary Palm) is one of the most distinctive landscape elements of several coastal urban centers in Italy. However, over the past few years, international trade has increased the risk of the introduction of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Red Palm Weevil) in the country, causing the death of numerous plants. In this work we assessed the damage caused by the insect to Canary Palm in the City of Bari, Apulia Region, furnishing useful information to decision makers and communities for proper preservation measures in favor of this important urban-green resource. The findings shed light on effective and efficient spending strategies of public funds for urban green inside areas affected by the Red Palm Weevil, also based on cost-benefit approaches
Activating rural development processes from the bottom-up: the European Community initiative programme “Leader”
The Landscape in the 2014-2020 Rural Development Programme for Apulia Region
This paper, after examining the concept of landscape, looks at the importance that Apulia's 2014-2020 Rural Development Program (RDP) assigns to the landscape itself and to its protection. It analyses the process leading to the final version of this document and to the measures it contains concerning landscape conservation. Notwithstanding the central role of the landscape in the scientific production and in the official documents, the paper shows that those in charge of formulating the Program did not give enough importance to this issue: in fact, it was considered as a marginal aspect in Apulia's RDP and was dealt with in an extremely superficial way
