Characterization of the organic residual fraction form an old landfill for agronomic applications

    No full text
Uncontrolled landfills are one of the causes of lithosphere contamination. The present study addresses the reclamation theme of an old landfill by using landfill mining. Attention is focused on the reuse of the organic residual fraction through the application of remediation technology. We propose a protocol of analysis of the landfill material sieved at 4 mm and 10 mm, that links chemical analyses and environmental bioassays. This protocol will be used to evaluate residual compatibility of the matrix for the landfill capping. Attention is mainly focused on the presence of heavy metals and on the possible interaction with test organisms. Chemical analyses of the residual matrix often showed the presence of heavy metals in concentrations exceeding the legislation limits. The biological tests do not particularly emphasize adverse effects to the growth of the used plant species. The bioassay test with Spartium junceum showed a good adaptation to stress conditions induced by the presence of the residual matrix. In conclusion, the conducted experimental activities demonstrated that the material could be reused in daily and final covering of controlled landfills. The proposed protocol allows us to have the following advantages: site reclamation with landfill mining operations, significant decrease in waste volume which should be added in new landfills, a saving of new inert material to be used in the management of current landfills

Assessment of the possible reuse of MSW coming from landfill mining of old open dumpsites

The present study addresses the theme of recycling potential of old open dumpsites by using landfill mining. Attention is focused on the possible reuse of the residual finer fraction (<4 mm), which constitutes more than 60% of the total mined material, sampled in the old open dumpsite of Lavello (Southern Italy). We propose a protocol of analysis of the landfill material that links chemical analyses and environmental bioassays. This protocol is used to evaluate the compatibility of the residual matrix for the disposal in temporary storages and the formation of ‘‘bio-soils’’ to be used in geo-environmental applications, such as the construction of barrier layers of landfills, or in environmental remediation activities. Attention is mainly focused on the presence of heavy metals and on the possible interaction with test organisms. Chemical analyses of the residual matrix and leaching tests showed that the concentration of heavy metals is always below the legislation limits. Biological acute tests (with Lepidum sativum, Vicia faba and Lactuca sativa) do not emphasize adverse effects to the growth of the plant species, except the bioassay with V. faba, which showed a dose–response effect. The new developed chronic bioassay test with Spartium junceum showed a good adaptation to stress conditions induced by the presence of the mined landfill material. In conclusion, the conducted experimental activities demonstrated the suitability of the material to be used for different purposes

Environmental monitoring and impact mitigation related to landfill management

A landfill can cause significant environmental impacts especially on water, air and soil. The study concentrates on the search for strategies to reduce the pollution risk of landfills. The attention is focused on the problem of a long-term impact of dry-tomb landfills and on the difficulty of controlling and limiting landfill gas emissions to the atmosphere, that concur to increase the greenhouse effect. The first objective is the experimental test of a landfill cover system that can match the acceleration of stabilization processes of organic materials. The scientific literature suggests the possibility of accelerating the process of waste stabilization in landfill, therefore reducing the risk of contamination after the post-management period. The second objective is the optimization of the biogas management, in order to treat the landfill gas with low calorific value, to capture biogas in the first stage of cultivation and in the "tail" phase. From the literature we also learn that the sources of greenhouse gases from human activities, including the production of biogas in landfills, are considered to be the most dangerous

Semantic-based resource discovery, composition and substitution in IEEE 802.11 mobile ad hoc networks

We present a general framework for resource discovery, composition and substitution in mobile ad-hoc networks, exploiting knowledge representation techniques. Key points of the proposed approach are: (1) reuse of discovery information at network layer in order to build a fully unified semantic-based discovery and routing framework; (2) use of semantic annotations in order to perform the orchestration of elementary resources for building personalized services adopting a concept covering procedure, and to allow the automatic substitution of no more suitable/available components. Using ns-2 simulator, we evaluated performances of the proposed framework with reference to a disaster recovery scenario. In particular, the impact of the number of available services and active clients has been investigated in various mobility conditions and for several service covering threshold levels. Obtained results show that: (1) the proposed framework is highly scalable, given that its overall performance is improved by increasing the number of active clients; (2) the traffic load due to clients is negligible; (3) also for a very small number of available service providers very high hit ratios can be reached; (4) increasing the number of providers can lead to hit ratios very close to 100% at the expense of an increased traffic load. Finally, the effectiveness of cross-layer interaction between routing and resource discovery protocols has been also evaluated and discussed

    Cross My Heart

Linked by a series of idiomatic expressions used to describe sadness, loss and love, “Cross My Heart” is a lyric essay delving into the world of journaling bad decisions and broken relationships. A deep and private self appears in diaries; intense curiosity makes resisting the off-limit contents of the confidential accounts difficult for the author. In her search for understanding her place in the life, mind and heart of another, unwanted discoveries ensue. Her father, a constant source of emotional strength and support, offers inadequate advice

Inthiscontributionanewspacesyntaxanalysesmethodispresentedfor analysing the degree of permeability in the main route network of towns and cities. First, a presentation is given on the methodological development of the various approaches taken until the present day. Then, a description is given on how this new analysis method can be used to conduct a permeability analyses of a main route network using the DepthmapX software. Finally, this method is applied to 25 different cities around the globe. As it turns out, the method presents an objective way in which to identify the foreground network in built environments, and to measure the degree of permeability or connectivity to the background network.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Spatial Planning and Strateg

The following research work aims to analyze the character Naún Briones of the novel Powder and Ash by the author Eliécer Cárdenas, examining the essence of it from the psychological, human and social point of view, from the values and antivalores that he showed, giving a sensitive nuance, close to everyday life; because Briones really existed, was rebellious and dissatisfied with the existence immersed in poverty and social inequality lived by peasants and indigenous people during the 20s and 30s. The richness and diversity of his personality, his help to the dispossessed, made him a legend that it lasts in the time, also when becoming a famous delinquent in the cities of the Ecuadorian south, especially of Loja; He was also considered an antihero. In the literary analysis the resources, the style and the narrative structure used in the novel are considered, resulting in a novel, realistic and original work. With it, Cárdenas breaks with the conventional way of the novels that preceded him, without losing the sense and ability to keep the reader's motivation

Contextualized BERT Sentence Embeddings for Author Profiling: The Cost of Performances

    No full text
The necessity to know information about the real identity of an online subject is a highly relevant issue in User Profiling, especially for analysis from digital sources such as social media. The digital identity of a user does not always present explicit data about her offline life such as age, gender, work, and more. This problem makes the task of user profiling complex and incomplete. For many years this issue has received a considerable amount of attention from the whole community, which has developed several solutions, also based on machine learning, to estimate user characteristics. The increasing diffusion of deep learning approaches has allowed, on the one hand, to obtain a considerable increase in predictive performance, but on the other hand, to have available models that cannot be interpreted and that require very high computational power. Considering the validity of new pre-trained language models on extensive data for resolving many natural language processing and classification tasks, we decided to propose a BERT-based approach (BERT-DNN) also for the author profiling task. In a first analysis, we compared the results obtained by our model with them of more classical approaches. As a follow, a critical analysis was carried out. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of these approaches also in terms of resources needed to run them. The results obtained by our model are encouraging in terms of reliability but very disappointing if we consider the computational power required for running it
