Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Disc degeneration and cervical spine intervertebral motion: A Cross-sectional study in patients with neck pain and matched healthy controls
While neck pain can be defined in clinical terms, in most cases the underlying pathophysiology is largely unknown. Regional cervical spine range of motion is often found to be reduced in patients with neck pain compared to persons without pain although it is not clear if the decreased range is cause or effect. Less is known about the role of intervertebral kinematics and how that might be related to the presence of disc degeneration. In this study, the prevalence of intervertebral disc degeneration and continuous cervical intervertebral motion were both measured utilizing quantitative fluoroscopy (QF) in patients with subacute or chronic neck pain (n = 29) and gender-matched healthy
controls (n = 30). A composite disc degeneration (CDD) score was calculated for each participant from the first, neutral, lateral fluoroscopic image. Intervertebral motion sharing parameters of motionsharing
inequality (MSI) and motion-sharing variability (MSV) were derived from the active cervical motion sequences obtained while patients were seated. The objective was to determine if average age, CDD, MSI, and MSV values were correlated and if there were differences in these variables between the neck pain group and the healthy control group. Correlation analysis was conducted for age, CDD, MSI, and MSV in each group. Age was moderately correlated with MSV in cervical spine extension in patients only (r = 0.63, p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the prevalence of disc degeneration (CDD) between patients, who had on average mild pain and related disability, and
healthy controls (median CDD 2 both groups, p = 0.94). There were also no significant differences in either flexion or extension intervertebral motion-sharing inequality or variability (MSI or MSV) between groups as measured during active cervical motion
The Development of a Certification and Grading Procedure for German SCI Units
Background/Objectives: Spinal cord injury (SCI) care in Germany was established after the Second World War, following Guttman’s philosophy that post-SCI rehabilitation should not be separated from the acute treatment phase. Reimbursement is negotiated with only rudimentary eligibility requirements. Over time, however, more and more centers have emerged that offer “only” rehabilitation. Therefore, in 2014, the German-Speaking Paraplegic Society (DMGP) saw the need to establish a certification and grading process to protect existing centers and enable qualified reimbursement negotiations. Methods: In a modified delpi process, key data reflecting the human resources and equipment of the units were collected, and, after lengthy consensus negotiations, a grading was proposed which recognizes four levels of performance. Level Ia—24/7 coverage for all SCI-related emergencies (including intensive care unit care and surgery)—to Level IIb (rehab only, no intensive care unit). Results: In 2019, the grading was accepted by the extended board of the DMGP, and all but one of the 27 SCI centers applied to be graded and certified according to a self-reported questionnaire (2020). Conclusions: The development of the certification requirements and grading system was a complicated process, but it was possible to reach a solution which allowed its acceptance by all German SCI centers. Whether it will result in better care for the patients remains to be seen

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Effects of Backward Walking on External Knee Adduction Moment and Knee Adduction Angular Impulse in Individuals with Medial Knee Osteoarthritis
Background: Backward walking (BW) has been proven to reduce the external knee adduction moment (EKAM) and knee adduction angular impulse (KAAI) during gait in healthy subjects, but its effects in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA) remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effects of self-selected speed BW on the EKAM, KAAI, and external knee flexion moment (EKFM) in individuals with medial knee OA. Methods: Thirty-two participants with medial knee OA underwent a three-dimensional gait analysis across three randomized conditions: (1) self-selected speed forward walking (FW), (2) self-selected speed BW, and (3) speed-controlled forward walking (SCFW) (for each individual, the SCFW speed was controlled within a range of 95% to 105% of BW speed). For each condition, the first peak of EKAM, second peak of EKAM, first peak of EKFM, and the KAAI were determined. One-way repeated measures ANOVA and multiple pairwise comparisons were performed to compare peaks of EKAM, peak of EKFM, and the KAAI between conditions. Results: BW significantly reduced the first peak of EKAM and the KAAI in comparison with FW and SCFW (p 0.05). Conclusions: BW can significantly reduce the first peak of EKAM and the KAAI in comparison with FW and SCFW in individuals with medial knee OA
