Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Sleep in athletes' recovery
Zkoumaný soubor tvořilo 90 respondentů (54 mužů a 36 žen). Výsledky: Po vyhodnocení dotazníkového šetření jsme zjistili, že naši respondenti sportují většinou 4-5krát týdně a spánek považují za velmi důležitý aspekt regenerace těla a mysli. Většina respondentů spí 7 až 8 hodin denně. V rámci spánkové hygieny před spánkem abstinují od alkoholu, kávy a nikotinu, aby si zajistili kvalitní spánek a zlepšili svou výkonnost. Title: Sleep in the regeneration of athletes Objectives: The main objective of the thesis is to find out, using a questionnaire survey, whether athletes deal with the quality of sleep and how they perceive it. Another goal is to find out whether athletes follow the rules of sleep hygiene and whether and how they try to influence the quality of sleep. Methods: a questionnaire containing 30 questions was used for data collection. It was a non standardized self-constructed questionnaire. The questionnaire was aimed at active and recreational athletes. It was distributed electronically. The research group consisted of 90 respondents (54 men and 36 women). Results: After evaluating the questionnaire survey, we found that our respondents usually do sports 4-5 times a week and consider sleep to be a very important aspect of body and mind regeneration. Most respondents sleep 7 to 8 hours a day. As part of sleep hygiene, they abstain from alcohol, coffee and nicotine before going to sleep to ensure quality sleep and improve their performance. However, we also found that the majority of our respondents do not follow the precautions regarding electronic devices just before going to bed, but on the other hand fall asleep in silence and darkness. Optimization of television production
In television industry, video engineer takes care of the optimum function of technical equipment and has a tight relation with the production team. The creative part of the production team creates the aesthetic part of production, and the engineer has to assess the possibility of implementation of such production from the technical aspect. We met certain limitations in television that originate from the fact that the main video mixer, Ross Video Vision Octane, provides only two ME units, one of which is used for mixing. This means that only one is available for preparation of video effects and direct transition between different ME settings is not possible. Moreover, ME also does not enable the use of four keys, but the need of using several keys occurs sometimes.
As we have a smaller Rossi Video Carbonite video mixer in television production, which is rarely used, it would be sensible to find a solution on how to use the capacity of that mixer together with the main video mixer. The solution is in the use of remote ViewControl management function, supported by the Carbonite mixer. If we bring a program output (which is the output of one ME mixer unit) beside mixer configuration for using this function and another output for setting the other ME Carbonite mixer unit, such as an input to Vision mixer, the capacities expand. We can use the ME Vision mixer unit and both ME Carbonite mixer units in a way that the operator manages it with a touch-screen display, which is installed next to the control panel of the Vision mixer. Using both mixers enables transitions between different ME settings, up to 12 keys can be used by chaining ME units, and, if optimised properly, the Carbonite mixer can also be used as a backup in case of a critical error on the Vision mixer.
This way, the equipment is used in an optimum manner and expands the possibilities of production. If we automate certain parts of the production, the entire work process can be additionally optimised. Since the purchase of a purpose-made software for automation in minor production, as in our case, is economically less feasible, own solution is more sensible. Designing such software is rather demanding. We must connect different equipment of various manufacturers, and the application must be very robust if we wish to use it for live broadcast, but this requires a lot of testing. That is why we are providing only the first few steps on how to approach development of such an application
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
