Resource limitation and intraspecific patterns of weight per length variation among spring detritivores.
This study examined the intraspecific variability of a phenotypic trait, the body weight/body length ratio, and its adequacy to provide unbiased information about patterns of resource availability among conspecific individuals . Individual body weight and length were measured for the amphipod Gammarus minus Say (and other detritivores) in samples from freshwater springs differing in expected resource availability, and from sites in which detritus abundance had been manipulated. Mean individual weight per length was lower: (a) in populations from lowrichness than from high-richness detritivore guilds ; (b) in populations with size-abundance distributions similar to that of the entire guild, rather than statistically different ; (c) in population samples from outside than from inside the areas of detritus addition . Small-sized individuals (<3 mm) showed the largest variation among both populations and population samples. Similar differences were qualitatively observed for the other common detritivores cooccurring with G. minus in some springs. These observed patterns were in agreement with the variation of resource availability expected among field conditions, supporting the relevance of weight per length as a measure of food limitation
Temperature and predator cues interactively affect ontogenetic metabolic scaling of aquatic amphipods: T and P effect on metabolic scaling
A common belief is that body mass scaling of metabolic rate results chiefly from intrinsic body-design constraints. However, several studies have shown that multiple ecological factors affect metabolic scaling. The mechanistic basis of these effects is largely unknown. Here, we explore whether abiotic and biotic environmental factors have interactive effects on metabolic scaling. To address this question, we studied the simultaneous effects of temperature and predator cues on the ontogenetic metabolic scaling of amphipod crustaceans inhabiting two different aquatic ecosystems, a freshwater spring and a saltwater lagoon. We assessed effects of phenotypic plasticity on metabolic scaling by exposing amphipods in the laboratory to water with and without fish cues at multiple temperatures. Temperature interacts significantly with predator cues to affect metabolic scaling. Our results suggest that metabolic scaling is highly malleable in response to short-term acclimation. The interactive effects of temperature and predators show the importance of studying effects of global warming in realistic ecological contexts
How can habitat size influence leaf litter decomposition in five mid-Appalachian springs (USA)? The importance of the structure of the detritivorous guild
Although habitat size is known to influence both structural and functional properties of ecosystems, there have been few attempts to assess the influence of habitat size on ecosystem processes. Here we investigated the relationships between leaf litter decomposition and ecosystem surface area, macroinvertebrates and physico-chemical factors in five freshwater springs located in Huntingdon County (Pennsylvania, U.S.A.). Leaves of Ulmus americana L. were used to study leaf litter breakdown with the litter-bag technique. Field work was carried out at one sampling station per spring, each with eight replicates per sampling time (3, 20, 40 days), from April to May 2004. American elm leaves decomposed at different rates in the different springs, varying inversely with the spring area. The leaf bags were colonized by 16 taxa of benthic macrofauna, amongst which scrapers and shredders were the most common guild. Macroinvertebrate species richness co-varied with spring area, but not with other physico-chemical variables. Moreover, a significant inverse relationship was observed between American elm leaf decay rate and taxonomic richness. In the studied springs, habitat area was an ecosystem feature indirectly affecting detritus processing by influencing the structure of the detrital food web within the systems
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
