Word order in the Latin DP: the Syntax of Demonstratives” in R. Oniga, R. Iovino and G. Giusti
No full textIn this paper I analyse the syntax of Latin demonstratives (DEMs) hic, ille,
iste, within the framework of generative grammar.1 The data show that
DEMs display many similarities but also some substantial differences
among each other.
I argue that the freedom in the arrangement of the elements in Latin
nominal expressions (NEs) is only apparent and due to a non-systematic
analysis of the data, which does not take into account the distinction
between basic and marked orders, the latter being derived by syntactic
movement. In particular, following Giusti (1993; 1997) and Oniga (2007),
I show that DEMs are always in the highest specifier of the NE, namely, in
SpecDP. In addition, I demonstrate that ille but not the other demonstratives
can introduce an adjective in complex appositive structures.
Beyond the theoretical contribution, I will also suggest at various
points in the paper how linguistic theory can be useful in updating Latin
grammars for classroom activities
Why Formal Linguistics for the Teaching of Latin
No full textA brief overview of the main syntactic structures of Latin shows that it is possible to express in a unified way the partial similarity and the partial differences characterizing simple sentences in Latin, English and Italian, because these languages, and probably all languages, make use of the same universal principles of phrase structure, even if some parameters are set differently in each language.
In general, we suggest that the concepts of “phrase” and “remerge” (namely, syntactic movement) are highly useful tools of contemporary formal linguistics: they are intuitive to native speakers of every language, they are appropriate for a scientifically advanced theoretical model, and they can be easily applied to language pedagogy.
Our main point has been that there are compelling reasons to formulate a new methodology of language teaching that emphasizes linguistic awareness more than traditional approaches. This methodology newly conceptualizes grammar as a science of the mind that both contributes to the students’ overall education and facilitates learning modern and classical languages
Enclitic and proclitic articles in Albanian
No full textIn this paper, I focus on the morpho-syntax of Albanian adjectives to test a proposal put forth in Giusti (2008, 2009, 2011) which treats feature sharing as the result of different configurations triggering application of Merge: Selection, Modification, Projection. I propose that proclitic and enclitic affixes on Albanian nouns and adjectives can be captured by the notion of “scattered head”, which is the spell-out of multiple applications of merge to the same head. I claim that such spell-out results obey paradigm specifications which are part of the lexical entry of the nominal or adjectival head

Latin as a split-DP language
No full textIn this paper, we discuss known and less known properties of Latin Nominal Expressions that apparently create a paradox. Despite lack of articles and high productivity in left branch extraction, Latin is not a typical NP-language in the sense of Chierchia (1998) and Bošković (2005, 2008). In many respects, it behaves like its daughter languages, all of which have articles. We solve this paradox proposing a complex nominal structure made of a DP, which hosts overt demonstratives, and a left-peripheral projection (LPP), parallel to the split CP in clauses. This split DP, based on Giusti (1996, 2006), can account both for the freedom of the orders found inside the Nominal Expression and for the occurrence of discontinuous Nominal Expressions
