    Quality indicators for modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) storage of high-quality european plum (Prunus domestica L.) cultivars

    The use of quality indicators is crucial in selling plums in more distant markets and the evaluation of freshness through multiple index is fundamental to evaluate the goodness of the storage technique. In this study we evaluated the quality of two european plums cultivars ('Ramasin' and 'Ariddo di Core' with purple and yellow flesh colour respectively) after modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) storage, through the selection of the most appropriate indicators. The headspace gas composition, the flesh fruit firmness (FFF), the soluble solid content (SSC), the titratable acidity (TA), the colour and the chlorophyll content of plums wrapped with 5 different films (F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5) were evaluated for up 21 days of storage (at 1±1°C and 90-95% relative humidity). For both cultivars, the multilayered films (F1 and F2, 90 and 65 μm respectively) offered better effectiveness over other films. The total chlorophyll concentration, showing a good correlation with the colorimetric parameters of luminance (L∗) and chroma (respectively R2=0.92 and R2= 0.96) confirmed, in the case of the Ariddo di Core cultivar, the results obtained by monitoring other parameters thus highlighting the usefulness of integrating multiple indexes in evaluating the performance of the storage methods used

    Pomological and quality traits of mulberry (Morus spp.) germplasm from Gorno Badakhshan in the Western Pamir

    The local fruit biodiversity can represent a good opportunity to maintain the agriculture and to develop economies in "marginal" territory such as those in the mountain rural areas. The genetic diversity of the Morus spp. is little known in the Western Pamir mountains, so that the objective of the present study was to improve the knowledge of the polymorphism of the species in the different poorly explored Tajik valleys by investigating the main quantitative and qualitative traits. Materials and methods - Six selected sites of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) region were investigated through field measurement on morphological traits of mulberry trees (both from wild and cultivated habitats). The qualitative analysis on fresh and dried fruits were carried out on four cultivars of the white mulberry (Morus alba L.) and one cultivar of the black mulberry (Morus nigra L.) collected in the Pamir Biological Institute, the highest botanical garden of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Results and discussion - Our study revealed high variability for all the measured parameters confirmed by a wide polymorphism. The highest rate of variability and the most promising genotypes in terms of fruit morphological traits were observed in the Vanch and the Rushan valleys. Due to the highest ascorbic acid content for the black cv. Shatut and the white cv. Marvori and a better taste, confirmed by the highest reducing and total sugar contents during the early and the full ripening (cv. Bedonia), mulberry fruits can be suggested for the fresh consumption. The cv. Shatut is the only one suggested for sun-drying, following specific local recipes for traditional consumption. Conclusion - The high morphogenetic variability of the mulberry trees in a marginal mountain area as the Gorno Badakhshan in the Western Pamir offers opportunities to make value of fruits with high nutritional and sensory profile and to develop the agricultural resources of any vulnerable territory

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Evolution of Qualitative Characteristics during Blueberry Fruit Storage in a Modified Atmosphere

    The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of different films to maintain MAP conditions for storing ‘Duke’ blueberries by verifying the evolution of qualitative traits of berries. The fruits were picked manually, individually deposited in polyethylene baskets and immediately transferred (1 h) to the laboratory under chilled conditions (10°C). The experimental storage units consisted of a pallet bag of two different types of film, polyethylene (100 μm) and a biobased film derived from starch (50 μm). The O2 and CO2 transmission rates, measured according to the ASTM F 2622-08 and ASTM F 2476-05 methods at 38°C and 90% RH, were, 2642 and 10654 [cm3/(m2·24 h)], respectively, for the polyethylene film and 655 and 1384 [cm3/(m2·24 h)], respectively, for the biobased film. The initial gas composition of the active MAP (11.2 kPa of O2, 10.3 kPaCO2 + 77.8 kPa N2) was chosen based on a previous report with some modifications. The flow-through system used to modify the atmosphere operates with high and lowpressure sides using CO2, O2 and N2. The air present in the pallet bags was partially substituted with the desired gas mixture. A manual timer regulated both the time of evacuation and filling with CO2. There was one pallet bag (with a volume of 1,728,000 cm3) for each treatment containing about 150 kg of blueberry fruits. The pallet bags were stored for up to 45 days at 1±1°C and at 85-90% RH. The results of both treatments were compared to a control (fruits stored in normal atmosphere). The overall results indicate that blueberry storage can be effectively extended by exposing the fruit to a cold environment and an adequate atmosphere composition. The 11.2 kPa of O2, the 10.3 kPa CO2 atmosphere composition reduced the changes in soluble solids content and acidity, and maintained acceptable levels of anthocyanins and phenolics

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
