Oxidative treatments of solid olive residues: Effects on phenolic and fatty acid fractions

    No full text
In the present study, we considered the effects of several chemical treatments of three different olive residues (pomace) of diverse origins, which all involve H2O2. Diluted (40vol) and concentrated (130vol; 30% wt) H2O2 was used alone or in combination with Fe sulfate (the Fenton system). The main goal was to oxidize the phenolic substances, as only a dephenolyzed sample can be safely used for applications like soil improvement or as biomass for biogas generation. The o-diphenols were always oxidized in higher amount than single phenols as demonstrated by data on tyrosol and hydroxytyrosol. The Fenton system appears to be a method that can oxidize the phenolic fraction, while leaving only a trace of residual H2O2 inside the pomace. We also considered the effects of these oxidative treatments on the triglycerides. Linoleic acid was largely oxidized, although only in pomace with a low water content and in the presence of the Fenton treatment. Finally, the whole lignocellulose matrix of all of the pomaces was recovered at the end of treatment without any large changes, as shown by the IR spectra of oxidized samples. Practical applications: Modern two-phase olive-oil extraction systems have become widely used, and it can be expected that in the near future they will replace traditional extraction plants. Together with many advantages, they also have some disadvantages, such as a greater need for disposal of pomace. Such by-products can be of value for re-use in soil improvement, as biomass for generation of biogas, as new ingredients for livestock feed, and as raw material for energy purposes (stone). Often these uses are hindered by the presence of low amounts of derivatives that can cause problems such as inhibition of the biochemical pathways involved. The high amounts of phenols and fatty acids in pomaces represent a serious problem for these supplementary uses. A phenol-free pomace would allow alternative uses and provide additional economic return from these by-products. We have considered the effects of several chemical treatments, always involving H2O2, of pomaces of different origins, for the oxidising of both their phenols and their residual triglycerides. The Fenton system is the method that can oxidise the phenolic fraction, while leaving only traces of residual H2O2. Among the fatty acids contained in the triglyceride fraction, linoleic acid was largely oxidized, although only in pomace with a low water content and in the presence of the Fenton treatment.

Boundaries of language, boundaries of worlds: a reflection on hate speech experienced and internalized among minors from different cultures

In the field of migration studies, the Eurocentric and ethnocentric analysis (Said, 1999; Sayad, 2002) has already been extensively explored as a point of demarcation in the power relations between groups, perpetually constructing the enemy and the scapegoat (Eco, 2020). In recent decades, the massive influence of social media (Ratajczak & Galzignato, 2019; Pasta 2023a) has undoubtedly contributed to the proliferation of social stereotypes (Galeotti, 2019), reinforcing toxic (Fiorucci, 2019) and anti-dialogical narratives. This paper presents the outcomes of an educational intervention with a group of unaccompanied foreign minors to examine the potential perception of the effects of hate speech experienced and internalized in their interpersonal language. Is the communication of these minors influenced by patterns of hate speech adopted from the host culture, or do such patterns pre-exist in their culture of origin? Intercultural coexistence, indeed, is a soft skill that must be nurtured through the mediation of emergency educators and pedagogists (Vaccarelli, 2017; Annacontini et al., 2022): communities are not given, but an outcome to be strived for through awareness of practices and the decolonization of minds (hooks, 2022)

MIGRANT PARENTING AS EMPOWERMENT. THE EDUCATIONAL CARE OF MIGRANTS MOTHERS WITHIN THE PROCIDA INTEGRATED RECEPTION SYSTEM

Our proposal offers a "female empowerment educational model" aimed at the bio-psycho-social wellbeing of migrant mothers, often victims of prostitution and trafficking, hosted at the SAI (System of Reception and Integration) on the island of Procida since 2018 under the AIDA project – ‘Arturo's Island’, funded by the Ministry of the Interior (Department of Civil Liberties and Immigration), promoted by the Municipality of Procida and LESS Social Cooperative. After having identified migrant women as a specific target group, currently, the AIDA project accommodates 25 beneficiaries from Iran, Nigeria, and Ukraine. Various outcomes have been achieved through the project in terms of selfempowerment, social and parenting skills, and support to the educational models of the welcoming country by “hands-on” activities for mothers and children. Since 2018, the project has initiated agency implementation (Giddens, 1979) through cooperation between the project's multidisciplinary team and the local, educational, and health services. This process has made the "Procida model" a unique example of "second reception", centered upon the intercultural coexistence (Dusi, 2007; Iavarone et al., 2015; Portera, 2004). Through a participatory actionresearch approach and a holistic vision, the AIDA project has brought together the entire chain of formal and informal services at the local community level to implement a support network for the personal and social empowerment of the beneficiaries. This has been notably achieved through the facilitation of job placements through internships and apprenticeships within local artisan workshops, significantly bolstering wellbeing of the beneficiaries in order to embody a comprehensive approach to care and integration

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
