No full textIl volume raccoglie gli atti dei due convegni internazionali dedicati al gotico e al fantastico tenutisi a Venezia nel 2013 e nel 2014. Scorrendo l'indice, il lettore può individuarne l'articolazione tematica e cogliere, nella varietà interdisciplinare dei contributi, l'incrocio di percorsi attorno all'immaginario gotico e fantastico dalle origini ai giorni nostri. La sequenza degli interventi si apre con la riflessione sui testi canonici del tale of terror che nel suo repertorio di motivi, ambientazioni e figure retoriche, costituisce il momento istitutivo del fantastico. Nell'originaria e mai smentita attenzione al mondo della psiche, alle sue lacerazioni e conflittualità, nella fascinazione per il linguaggio dell'incubo e della follia, nella deformazione grottesca ed espressionista della dimensione realistica del quotidiano, e nella capacità di veicolare questioni di ordine identitario, ontologico ed epistemico, il fantastico si è affermato come una delle forme più innovative e dinamiche della scena culturale moderna. Prova ne è il perdurare di interesse da parte di scrittori, artisti e cineasti che a esso continuano a richiamarsi negli esperimenti postmodernisti di riscrittura, di parodia e di gioco intertestuale. No full textWhen in 1887 Oscar Wilde wrote "The Canterville Ghost" the Victorian ghost story had already developed a distinctive identity. It was a form much in demand throughout the nineteenth century because of the popularity of the Gothic tale of terror, the expansion of the publishing industry and partly because of the craze for spiritualism. In this article I argue that, given his classical education, effervescent wit, and penchant for paradoxical effects, it was almost inevitable for Wilde to deploy all the formulaic conventions and clichés of Gothic fiction for comic effect. Written after Wilde had made his flamboyant lecture tour in North America, "The Canterville Ghost" is both a playful parody of Gothic melodrama and a delightful satire of American pragmatism, commercialism and commodity culture. However, the ebullient irony and the high farce of the first sections of the tale, pivoting on the America's provincialism and prosaic mentality, are replaced in the end by the ethical code and capacity for wish fulfilment of fairy tales, anticipating the motifs of selfishness, forgiveness and especially compassion which lie at the heart of his entire work

No full textLa letteratura gotica e fantastica sono legate da un'intima parentela e da un terreno culturale affini. Comuni il primato dell'elemento soprannaturale, la fascinazione per il linguaggio del sogno, l’attenzione al mondo della psiche e all’erotismo, nonchè la proiezione visionaria e traumatica dei demoni della coscienza, quelli che E.T.A.Hoffmann chiamava "i fantasmi dell'io". Strettamente legata a questo interesse per l'interiorità, è l'istanza eversiva che si esplica in una deformazione grottesca o spaventosa della dimensione realistica del quotidiano. Tuttavia, a differenza del gotico, che ha precise origini storiche, il fantastico va inteso non come un genere ma un modo dai confini più ampi. La sua polifonia si dispiega nella sua presenza in seno ad altri generi con cui spesso convive in un rapporto di fertile contaminazione: dal romanzesco al fiabesco, dal fantasy alla fantascienza fino ad arrivare al metaromanzesco contemporaneo. Fin dagli albori il fantastico è stato una componente di rilievo della modernità per la messa in discussione del concetto di mimesi e perchè tramite esso si è attuato un capovolgimento della poetica romantica, stabilendo una distanza critica nei confronti della storia e chiamando in causa con ironia la stessa tecnica del narrare

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
