Prevalence of chronic venous pathology in healthcare workers and the role of upright standing

    No full text
Background: Chronic venous disease (CVD) affects around 25% of adult population in developed countries and it often represent a health problem for different kind of workers, in particular for who spend much of the working time in upright standing. Methods: The study was carried out on a population of 173 nonmedical workers of a midsize hospital in Italy (91 nurse, 31 support staff workers and 51 employees). The study protocol was taken from a previous study of our group and included a clinical examination and a questionnaire. Results: From the analysis of data it emerged a particular importance ofupright standing as major risk factor for CVD. The prevalence of venous pathology seems to be greater among nurses and auxiliaries than the administrative staff and, as expected, it was significantly higher among female workers than in males. Conclusions: The results obtained show that the clinical-diagnostic protocol described can be used by doctors far screening venous pathology at workplaces. Wor(l)d-making Libraries: Fantastic Libraries as Creators of Alternative Realities

    No full text
Fantasy fiction often appropriates the topos of the library to reflect upon the generative power of literature and on our ability to tap into it. Since the publication of Jorge Luis Borges’ influential short story, The Library of Babel (1941), the image of the library as a universe in itself, as a repository of virtually boundless (if unfathomable and labyrinthine) knowledge has become a recurring feature in fantasy literature. This essay seeks to investigate how British author Genevieve Cogman and American author Scott Hawkins refer to this tradition in their respective novels The Invisible Library (2014) and The Library at Mount Char (2015), through an analysis of some specific elements. In both texts, the structure of the library is represented as an interdimensional core, a macrocosm from which other dimensions may develop (including our own): each alternative reality hinges upon the library, which is in itself boundless, albeit rigorously arranged. While Cogman chooses to highlight the library’s function as a portal to other worlds, thus staging a traditional quest consistent with the informing paradigms of fantasy fiction, Hawkins stresses its metaphysical quality, reflecting upon the idea of God and its viability in our contemporary culture. Furthermore, these conceptions are equally associated with an understanding of language which enhances the tropes of words as “speaking” things into existence. Whether enchanting or emanating from the library’s ordering force, the verbal tools devised by Cogman and Hawkins revolve around the idea that language is power, and that through language reality can be reshaped

Among Grazia Deledda’s characters, Cosima is the most autobiographical one, as we can notice from the examples. Concordance can be noticed between the author and the female characters of her works: Regina is the main character of Nostalgie, Nina in Il Paese del Vento and Maria Concezione in La chiesa della solitudine

Here we present the dataset of the descriptive analysis of the bibliographic production of the world renowned heteropterist Dr. Jocélia Grazia. We analyzed a total of 220 published documents, including scientific papers, scientific notes, and book chapters. Additionally, we applied the Plazi workflow to extract taxonomic treatments, images, tables, and references from 75 different documents in accordance with the FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse). The extracted treatments are available on TreatmentBank. grazia-festschrift-basic_metadata.csv: this file contains basic metadata information about all 219 publications published up to 2020 (not inclusive), such as: File, Authors, Journal, Year, Volume, Issue, Pagination, doi. grazia-festschrift-coauthors_data.csv: this file contains information on the co-authors, separated in different columns, with the country of their affiliation as well. Benzene and lipid asset

    No full text
Background: In relation to the medico-social and medico-legal aspects of urban pollution we studied the effects of benzene present in urban pollution on outdoor workers exposed to physical, chemical, and psychosocial stressors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possible correlation between the levels of benzene and its urinary metabolites in the blood (Trans muconic acid and S-phenylmecapturic acid) and the parameters of the lipid structure: Total cholesterol, High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), triglycerides and blood sugar. Materials and methods: From an initial group 1,500 we selected a group of 199 subjects. A blood sample was taken for each worker to assess blood benzene levels and urinalysis to determine the levels of trans, trans-muconic acid and S-phenyl mercapturic acid. We compared the mean and standard deviation of the following lipid parameters: Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides and glycemia with benzene and urinary metabolites; we excluded the workers with confounding factors and performed the Pearson’s correlation between lipid parameters and urinary metabolites in the total sample and also among age, seniority, sex and BMI; multiple linear regression was performed for the evaluation of the main confounding factors. Results: We did not find a statistically significant alteration between the values of the lipid structure between the two groups of workers and the parameters of benzene. Triglycerides and HDL are statistically significantly influenced by sex (p=0.001) and (p=0.00) and BMI (p=0.00) and (p=0.001) as well as total cholesterol is influenced in a statistically significant way from age (p=0.003) and blood glucose from BMI (p=0.002) A statistically significant difference was found among the averages of phenylmercapturic S acid values of traffic policeman and police drivers (p<0.05), where higher values were among drivers. Conclusions: The results suggest that occupational exposure to levels of benzene, present in urban pollution, would appear not to influence the values of the lipid parameters in traffic policeman
