Multiple orthogonal geodesic chords in nonconvex Riemannian disks using obstacles
We use nonsmooth critical point theory and the theory of geodesics with obstacle to show a multiplicity result about orthogonal geodesic chords in a Riemannian manifold (with boundary) which is homeomorphic to an N-disk. This applies to brake orbits in a potential well of a natural Hamiltonian system, providing a further step towards the proof of a celebrated conjecture by Seifert (Math Z 51:197–216, 1948)
A finite dimensional approach to light rays in General Relativity
We propose a nite dimensional setup for the study of lightlike geodesics starting orthogonally to a spacelike (n − 2)-submanifold and arriving orthogonally to the time-slices of an (n − 1)-dimensional timelike submanifold of a n-dimensional spacetime. Under a transversality and a nonfocality assumption, we prove a nite dimensional reduction of a general relativistic Fermat principle, and we give a formula for the Morse index. We present some applications to bifurcation theory, and we conclude the paper with the discussion of some examples that illustrate our results
Electronic Properties of Curved Few-Layers Graphene: A Geometrical Approach
We show the presence of non-relativistic Lévy-Leblond fermions in flat three- and four-layers graphene with AB stacking, extending the results obtained in Cariglia et al. 2017 for bilayer graphene. When the layer is curved we obtain a set of equations for Galilean fermions that are a variation of those of Lévy-Leblond with a well defined combination of pseudospin, and that admit Lévy-Leblond spinors as solutions in an approriate limit. The local energy of such Galilean fermions is sensitive to the intrinsic curvature of the surface. We discuss the relationship between two-dimensional pseudospin, labelling layer degrees of freedom, and the different energy bands. For Lévy-Leblond fermions, an interpretation is given in terms of massless fermions in an effective 4D spacetime, and in this case the pseudospin is related to four dimensional chirality. A non-zero energy band gap between conduction and valence electronic bands is obtained for surfaces with positive curvature
Stability and distributed control of degenerate diffusion equations
This paper is concerned with stability and control of the parabolic p-Laplace equation. The autonomous equation is shown to be asymptotically stable, while the stronger property of exponential stability is guaranteed by the presence of lower-order terms satisfying a suitable growth condition. On the basis of these results, the problem of reference tracking using a distributed control input is investigated and, in particular, two approaches are discussed: finite-time stabilization and quadratic optimal control. Effective field description of the Anton-Schmidt cosmic fluid
The effective theory of the Anton-Schmidt cosmic fluid within the Debye approximation is investigated. In this picture, the Universe is modeled out by means of a medium without cosmological constant. In particular, the Anton-Schmidt representation of matter describes the pressure of crystalline solids under deformations imposed by isotropic stresses. The approach scheme is related to the fact that the Universe deforms under the action of the cosmic expansion itself. Thus, we frame the dark energy term as a function of scalar fields and obtain the corresponding dark energy potential V(φ). Different epochs of the Universe evolution are investigated in terms of the evolution of φ. We show how the Anton-Schmidt equation of state is capable of describing both late and early epochs of cosmic evolution. Finally, numerical bounds on the Anton-Schmidt model with n = −1 are derived through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis on the combination of data coming from type Ia Supernovae, observations of Hubble parameter, and baryon acoustic oscillations. Statistical comparison with the ΛCDM model is performed by the Akaike information criterion and Bayesian information criterion selection criteria. Results are in excellent agreement with the low-redshift data. A further generalization of the model is presented to satisfy the theoretical predictions at early-stage cosmology
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
