Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Biodiversity of marine caves in the North Aegean sea

Marine caves constitute typical ecosystems of the Mediterranean rocky coasts. However, scientific data on their biodiversity is fragmented and little information exists for the eastern Mediterranean basin. In the present study, 4 marine caves of the North Aegean Sea with different topographic features were surveyed. In order to visualize the cave morphology, a rapid and cost efficient method with minimum requirements regarding equipment and number of dives was developed. The outputs of this method were three-dimensional cave models which were used for the depiction of cave communities. Biodiversity of the studied caves was recorded qualitatively; in two of the caves spatial heterogeneity of sessile benthos was studied quantitatively with a non-destructive method (photoquadrats). Sponge samples were also collected from different cave zones to investigate their role as ecosystem engineers in this habitat. In total, 296 taxa were found. The results concerning the synthesis of the studied communities revealed differences from marine caves in other Mediterranean areas, such as species endemic to the eastern basin, absence of octocoral facies and dominance of sponges. Distance from the entrance and position in the caves had a significant effect on community structure. These results combined with the three-dimensional cave models revealed a marked spatial heterogeneity, highlighting the significance of topography for the recorded patterns. Porifera dominated in the studied communities in terms of species richness and spatial coverage and they could be used as a surrogate taxon for the study of spatial community variability. Sponge morphological diversity could function as a surrogate measure for describing spatial patterns of the overall benthic community, outreaching limitations in the taxonomic identification when photographic methods are used. Additionally, sponges were found to maintain their functional role as ecosystem engineers across the different cave zones, providing a microhabitat to numerous symbiotic species. Meta-analysis of the available data on Mediterranean marine cave biodiversity (307 studies) was performed in an effort to examine the significance of the cave habitat for the Mediterranean ecosystem. Biodiversity data from the present study combined with data derived from the literature revealed that caves constitute reservoirs of biodiversity, supporting a large number of taxa (2,167 taxa belonging to 58 major groups) and considerable percentage of the Mediterranean diversity for particular taxonomic groups. Mediterranean sponges were highly represented in marine caves at the species (46.7%), generic (70%), and family level (88%). Sponge species richness and taxonomic diversity varied among Mediterranean areas, while geography was more influential than illumination level across the different ecological cave zones. The marine cave environment seems to favour the development of rich communities with a broad taxonomic range as well as several exclusive, rare, bathyal, protected, and commercial species. The record of 56 alien species in caves, mainly in the southeastern Mediterranean, highlights the need for monitoring their communities. Differences between marine cave communities from different geographical areas combined to the marked spatial heterogeneity due to the site-specific cave topography indicate the need to protect different morphological types of caves in every biogeographical region.Τα υποθαλάσσια σπήλαια αποτελούν χαρακτηριστικό οικοσύστημα των βραχωδών ακτών της Μεσογείου.

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
