The Umweltlehre between Uexküll and Husserl|La Umweltlehre tra Uexküll e Husserl

    No full text
The aim of this article is to outline a possible link between the work of Jacob von Uexküll and that of Edmund Husserl, following the development of the concept of Umwelt employed by both authors. If Umwelt is indeed the core concept of Uexküll’s work, in Husserl’s case we have to look through the manuscripts, where the use of the notion becomes increasingly frequent and specialized. Even taking into account a bridging role likely played by Max Scheler, who was immediately receptive of Uexküll’s theories, the paper will suggest a deeper theoretical proximity with Husserl, at least in terms of the fundamental aspects of a Umwelt-theory. If grounded, this hypothesis would shed a new light on the history of the concept of Umwelt and its development, which tends not to take the father of phenomenology and his contribution into accoun

Cyclodextrin-based sorbents for solid phase extraction

    No full text
Cyclodestrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides well-known for their ability to form host-guest inclusion complexes with properly sized compounds. They have been used for decades as chiral selectors as well as drug delivery systems within the frameworks of separation science and pharmaceutical science. More recently, their use has been extended to the field of extractive science under the stimulus of additional advantageous characteristics, such as low-price, negligible environmental impact, non-toxicity, as arising from the fact that natural CDs are starch degradation products. To abate their solubility in water and generate novel sorbents for solid phase extraction, the following approaches have been employed: (i) immobilization onto inert materials (silica, attapulgite, etc.); (ii) immobilization onto nanomaterials (magnetic nanoparticles, titanium oxide, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, etc.); (iii) polymerisation with specific cross-linkers to form the so-called CD-based nanosponges. Particularly promising are these last ones for their selectivity, mesoporous structure, insolubility in aqueous media and good dispersibility. This review offers a concise overview on the state of art and future prospects of CDs in this important sector of the analytical chemistry, offering a critical perspective of the most significant applications

Techniques of Presence: A Way to Interpret Technoscience Starting from Ernesto De Martino’s Theory of Magic

Ernesto de Martino developed in the 1940s a theory of magic on philosophical grounds, while engaging a critical dialogue with the anthropology of his time. The central category of his study is that of the “crisis of presence”. Through it, the magical is interpreted as a historical response to an existential and permanent predicament of the human condition. The role of the shaman and the ritual are interpreted in an original way as countermovements against the risk of losing one's individual consistency (presence). Magic, from this perspective, reveals itself not to be primarily a way of dominating the natural world and making it function according to our needs and desires. While it does not lose this operative character, it proves to be initially born out of an inner condition of existential crisis. The purpose of this paper is to delineate the De Martino’s theory of the relationship to magic and to trace its connection to modern technosciences. Regarding the underlying need to which they respond and the way in which its procedures are conducted: In magical thinking there is no intention of developing a description of the world, instead a willingness to dominate its irregularities. Magic operates through recomposing human presence when it is threatened by forces outside its dominion. In our hypothesis, magicians appear as a kind of techno-scientists who succeed in obtaining a representation of the world only insofar as their interventions prove effective on it

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Hydrophobic Eutectic Solvent-Based Dispersive Liquid-Liquid Microextraction Applied to the Analysis of Pesticides in Wine

A green solvent-based DLLME/HPLC-MS method for the determination of 19 pesticides in wine samples has been developed. The extractant solvent is a hydrophobic eutectic mixture composed of L-menthol and butylated hydroxytoluene in a molar ratio of 3:1. The endogenous ethanol of wine has been used as dispersive solvent, in order to avoid the solidification of the extracts under 19◦C. The mobile phase composition, the elution gradient and the sample injection volume were optimized in order to make this hydrophobic mixture compatible with conventional reversed phase chromatography and electrospray ionization. The method was validated in matrix, using a wine free from the target compounds. Average recovery as high as 80%, precision between 3 and 14%, and limits of detection and quantification much lower than the maximum residue levels (MRLs) for grapes and wines fixed by the EU regulation, make this multiresidue method fitted for the purpose, with the further advantages of being quick, cheap and in compliance with the green analytical chemistry. From the analysis of 11 commercial wines it was found that just in a bio sample the target compounds were not detectable or lower than quantification limit; as for the other samples, the most widespread and abundant pesticides were methoxyfenozide and boscalid, but their levels were much lower than the relative MRLs
