Analysing the role of factors affecting farmers’ decisions to continue with agrienvironmental schemes from a temporal perspective

The need to assess the impact of agri-environmental schemes from a long-term perspective has cast light on the temporal dynamics of farmer participation over the duration of single contracts. This assessment would help to better target and tailor schemes and achieve more persistent environmental benefits. This issue is addressed by considering the interplay of time, policy changes and background factors on farmers’ decisions. The farm, the farmer’s sociodemographic characteristics, attitudes and motivations, and social and informational factors were considered among the background factors, according to the theory of reasoned action and planned behaviour. A discrete-time duration model, i.e. the only approach that allows the full consideration of the effects of time and the dynamics of background factors in the continuation of agri-environmental schemes, was estimated. The analysis was based on a longitudinal sample of farmers located in the Veneto region of Italy who have adopted a specific scheme, i.e., plantation and/or maintenance of hedgerows and buffer strips, for at least one contract period within a time span of eighteen years (2000-2017). The results highlight that a farmer’s continuation of an agri-environmental scheme for a long period of time is the outcome of a mix of concurring factors, among which attitudes and motivations, as well as social factors, play important roles. The impact of these factors also evolves over time, with the effects of social pressure and neighbouring farms being the most important factors under recent policy rounds. These outcomes provide useful insights for rethinking policy design and information strategies for farmers in any new round of Rural Development Programmes

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Into the wild? Preferences of frequent mountain and forest recreationists for accessibility and mobility

Outdoor recreation in forests and mountains is growing in popularity globally and especially in industrialised countries. Outdoor recreation has benefits both for practitioners’ body and mental health, and local communities for rev-enue opportunities. This study focuses on frequent outdoor recreationists, who are members of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), by exploring: (i) the infra-structure preferences for accessing and moving in mountain and forest areas; (ii) possible associations between socio-demographic characteristics and frequency of mountain and forest visits; and (iii) possible relationships between sociodemographic characteristics and the frequency of use of mountain bike and e-bike. Ordinal logistic regression models were used to achieve the second and third objectives. Results show that CAI recreationists tend to prefer lim-ited or no services for accessing mountains. They rarely use e-bikes and mountain bikes and their frequency of visits to mountains are influenced by educa-tional attainment and occupation. Results can provide valuable information for land management decision processes regarding accessibility infrastructures. Future research should address more occasional mountain and forest recre-ationists and local communities

La componente femorale Biofit nel trattamento degli della protesizazione dell'anca

The paper reports the first encouraging results relating to the recent use of Bio-fit femoral components in secondary operations due to the aseptic mobilization of the stem in cemented (5 cases: 4 Stanmore, 1 mueller) and non-cemented (1 case: Lord) hip prostheses. in the preparation of the diaphyseal canal in cemented hip prostheseis a relatively wide notch has been always made opposite to the distal part of the removed stem in order to ensure the full removal of the cement and allow a direct view of the preparation of a suitable housing for the bio-fit stem. This also allows the movement and fit of the latter into the underlying diaphyseal canal to be checked. The Bio-fit femoral component only had to be cemented in one case, whereas in the other 5 cases it was fitted without cemetn, except fpor a small amount which was considered necessary in three cases to fill in the trochanteric cavity which had been eroded and sunk

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
