Structurally unstable regular dynamics in 1D piecewise smooth maps, and circle maps

    No full text
In this work we consider a simple system of piecewise linear discontinuous 1D map with two discontinuity points: X′ = aX if ∣X∣ z, where a and b can take any real value, and may have several applications. We show that its dynamic behaviors are those of a linear rotation: either periodic or quasiperiodic, and always structurally unstable. A generalization to piecewise monotone functions X′ = F(X) if ∣X∣ z is also given, proving the conditions leading to a homeomorphism of the circle

Speculative behaviour and complex asset price dynamics: A global analysis

    No full text
This paper analyses the dynamics of a model of a share market consisting of two groups of traders: fundamentalists, who base their trading decisions on the expectation of a return to the fundamental value of the asset, and chartists, who base their trading decisions on an analysis of past price trends. The model is reduced to a two-dimensional map whose global dynamic behaviour is analysed in detail. The dynamics are affected by parameters measuring the strength of fundamentalist demand and the speed with which chartists adjust their estimate of the trend to past price changes. The parameter space is characterized according to the local stability/instability of the equilibrium point as well as the non-invertibility of the map. The method of critical curves of non-invertible maps is used to understand and describe the range of global bifurcations that can occur. It is also shown how the knowledge of deterministic dynamics uncovered here can aid in understanding the behaviour of stochastic versions of the model. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. A non-autonomous system leading to cyclic chaotic sets to model physiological rhythms

    No full text
It is proposed a nonlinear system to model highly complex states of rhythms, whose patterns of activity seem irregular. A non-autonomous system which takes into account both exogenous and endogenous influences. The dynamic behaviors of its stroboscopic map are investigated, by using triangular systems. The model provides a theoretical framework for addressing cyclic transitions between chaotic sets. The analysis underlines the role of the parameters in the structure and shape of the attractors, so to be in agreement with experimental data
