Translating the representation of the tourist landscape: A corpus-based study

    Get PDF
This paper will present a corpus-based study on the translated language of tourism, focusing in particular on the stylistics of tourist landscapes. Through a comparative analysis of a specifically designed corpus of travel articles originally written in English (namely the TourEC-Tourism English Corpus) and a corpus of tourist texts translated from a variety of languages into English (namely the T-TourEC – Translational Tourism English Corpus), the study will investigate a selection of collocates, concordances and keywords related to the description and representation of tourist settings in both corpora. The aim will be that of identifying differences, aspects or practices to be potentially improved that characterize the translated language of tourism with respect to tourist texts originally written in English. Results will show that the discursive patterns of translated texts differ from the stylistic strategies typically employed in native English for the linguistic representation of landscape and settings due to phenomena of translation universals, and that these differences may affect the relating communicative functions, properties and persuasive effects of tourist promotional discourse

Language Variation and Translation: a Theoretical Overview

The aim of this paper is to describe some of the most common and ef-fective strategies identified by language theorists and translators with reference to language variation phenomena.Language variation is a feature strictly correlated to the same nature of languages, which in-cludes several notions (i.e. register, dialect, genre, style) that often over-lap in their definitions, representing theoretical aspects of crucial im-portance in the context of language studies, particularly within the field of translation. Indeed, the ability of recognising language varia-tion phenomena in a source language and of rendering them into the most adequate versions of a target language, is one of the major is-sues for translators, which requires a comprehensive and methodical linguistic awareness to face these important linguistic phenomena, both in specialist languages and literary fields. The following sections will be therefore dedicated to the description of some of the most com-mon and effective strategies identified by language theorists, and thor-oughly employed by translators, with reference to language variation, in order to suggest a clear overview and methodological approach through which prospective and novice translators could refer to

Functional vocabulary in the language of the Law: a corpus-driven analysis of the European Union written declarations

The following paper will provide a corpus-driven analysis of some specific aspect of the functional vocabulary and performative verbs characterising the language of the law in English and techniques for their translation into Italian, through the compilation of a parallel undirectional corpus of European Union (EU) written declarations. These official documents, printed and translated in all the official languages of the EU, represent a means to promote and enforce the political action of the European Parliament (EP) and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). The linguistic features of this text type perform very important pragmatic functions with political and legal implicatures [...].The following study will examine such implications through the analysis of specific functional terms and expressions typical of legal English, namely archaic adverbs, prepositional phrases and performative verbs, and their corrisponding Italian translations

What is really lost in translation? Some observations on the importance and the ethics of translation

    No full text
Almost every time that someone compares the translation of a text with its original, the quality of the translation is rarely awarded with overall positive comments: there is always ‘something missing’, there are always some aspects of the original that are inevitably ‘left behind’, even when it is recognized that the translator ‘has done a remarkable job’. Whenever someone compares a text to its translation, there is always a feeling that the ‘original text has lost many of its qualities in translation’. There are far too many examples which could evidently support this type of assertions, both in literary texts and in texts of other linguistic genres, due not only to the specific cultural and grammatical differences between the source and target languages concerned, but also, sometimes, to the inattention or inaccuracies of the translator(s) or of the automatic translation systems used to translate a text. The following paper aims to identify the reasons behind this ‘sense of loss’, and to suggest an alternative interpretation of it, by describing some practical examples of translation and by illustrating the ethical and theoretical implications involved in the translation of any text, in order to be fully aware and to re-evaluate the complexity and the importance of this process
