The Gospel on the Margins: The Ideological Function of the Patristic Tradition on the Evangelist Mark

    No full text
In spite of the virtually unanimous patristic opinion that the evangelist Mark was the interpreter of Peter, one of the most prestigious apostolic founding figures in Christian memory, the Gospel of Mark was mostly neglected in the patristic period. Not only is the text of Mark the least well represented of the canonical Gospels in terms of the number of patristic citations, commentaries and manuscripts, the explicit comments about the evangelist Mark reveal some ambivalence about its literary or theological value. In my survey of the reception of Mark from Papias of Hierapolis until Clement of Alexandria, I will argue that the reason why the patristic writers were hesitant to embrace the Gospel of Mark was that they perceived the text to be amenable to the Christological beliefs and social praxis of rival Christian factions. The patristic tradition about Mark may have little historical basis, but it had an important ideological function in appropriating the text in the name of an apostolic authority from the margins or periphery

RICE PRODUCTION GOAL PRIORITIZATION IN NORTH-EAST NIGERIA: THE ANALYTIC HIERARCHY PROCESS (AHP) APPROACH

    No full text
This study applies the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to prioritize key goals for rice production in north-east Nigeria, aiming to provide insights into resource allocation for enhanced productivity. The results indicate that the Labour and Seed goal is the highest priority, with a score of 0.4460, reflecting its critical role in optimizing production. The Yield goal follows with a score of 0.3150, signifying its substantial impact on overall output. Conversely, the Budget goal (0.1176) and the Chemical goal (0.0673) are ranked as less critical. A consistency ratio of 0.03973 confirms a reliable level of consistency in the pairwise comparisons, adding robustness to the prioritization results. These findings suggest that stakeholders should focus primarily on improving labour and seed inputs to maximize efficiency in rice production. Emphasis on these resources aligns with previous research underscoring the influence of labour and seed quality on crop productivity. In contrast, budget and chemical inputs are deemed secondary priorities. By concentrating efforts on labour and seed optimization, sustainable and profitable rice farming practices can be promoted, ultimately benefiting regional agricultural outcomes

Markovian approach for the analysis and prediction of weekly rainfall pattern in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria

    No full text
A stochastic model to study weekly rainfall pattern has been presented in this paper. The Markovian method was used to predict and analyze weekly rainfall pattern of Makurdi, Benue state, Nigeria for a period of eleven years (2005-2015). After some successful iterations of the model, its stabilizes to equilibrium probabilities, revealing that in the long-run 22% of the weeks during rainy season in Makurdi, will experience no rainfall , 50% will experience low rainfall, 25% will experience moderate rainfall and 2% will experience high rainfall. The model also reveals that, a week of high rainfall cannot be followed by another week of high rainfall , a week of high rainfall cannot be followed by a week of no rainfall, and a week of moderate rainfall cannot precede a week of high rainfall. These results are important information to the residents of Markudi and environmental management scientists to plan for the uncertainty of rainfall. Keywords: Markov chain, Weekly Rainfall, Transition Probabilities, Equilibrium probabilities Probability State Vector, Makurdi

    F. Dell’Acqua, M. Cerno, The Earliest Homilies on Mary’s Assumption: Ambrose Autpert and the Byzantine Tradition, in ‘Viator’, 51.2 (2021), 1–56

    No full text
This article analyses the earliest known Latin homily that explicitly treats the Assumption of Mary. Its author was Ambrose Autpert, a monk active at the monastery of S. Vincenzo al Volturno in central Italy between the late 740s and the early 780s. The article will identify a wide number of Latin sources and models for this homily, and argue that Autpert was aware of Greek homilies on the Assumption of Mary written a few decades earlier by prominent preachers such as Patriarch Germanos of Constantinople, the bishop of Gortyna known as Andrew of Crete, and the monk of Mar Saba, John of Damascus. Autpert’s writing echoes and combines vivid formulas used in Greek homilies to extoll the Mother of God as the “ladder” and “gate” of heaven. Autpert’s perspective on the Assumption is not only strongly dependent on the Greek tradition, but is also refreshingly innovative in the Latin tradition

ESTIMATION OF HERITABILITY AND PREDICTED GENOTYPE MEAN FOR SEED YIELD OF CASTOR (RICINUS COMMUNIS L.) USING BEST LINEAR UNBIASED PREDICTION (BLUP)

    No full text
Eighty six castor genotypes were evaluated to estimate heritability and predicted genotype mean for seed yield and its component traits. The genotypes were planted at three locations using incomplete block experimental design with three replications. The results revealed significant effects of genotypes for most of the traits evaluated. Significant interactions of genotypes by locations were observed for six traits including 100 seed weight and seed yield. Genotypic coefficient of variation and phenotypic coefficient of variation were high for number of branches per plant and 100 seed weight. Heritability for the studied traits ranged from 0.21 to 0.92. High genetic advance as percentage of mean coupled with high heritability were observed for most of the traits. Thirty six out of eighty six genotypes evaluated presented predicted genotypic seed yield mean above the general mean. These results revealed moderate to high possibility for improvement of five out of ten traits evaluated
