Autoantibodies and autoantigens in systemic lupus erythematosus. Analysis by the immunoblotting technique
In recent years, the immunoblotting technique has been introduced in the study of autoimmunity in systemic rheumatic diseases. It allows simultaneous detection of a large spectrum of autoantibodies, both against salt extractable nuclear antigens (ENA) and salt insoluble ones. Moreover, the identification of new antibody specificities has lead to increasing use and usefulness of this technique. The immunoblotting method has been largely employed in the serology of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Because of heterogeneity and policlonality of the immune response, such disease is characterized by a wide range of autoantibodies directed against constituents of nearly all cells. In SLE autoantibodies identified by immunoblotting belong to the categories of anti-histone and anti-non-histone antigen antibodies. In this paper a review of the literature is presented of pertinent data about the clinical significance of autoantibodies in SLE as detected by immunoblotting and of the molecular aspects of related autoantigens
The influence of intra-articular hyaluronic acid on PGE2 and cAMP of synovial fluid
Prostaglandin (PG)E2, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), white blood cells (WBC), total protein (TP), total complement activity (CH50) and beta-2-microglobulin (beta-2-m) were measured at baseline and after eight days in the synovial fluid (SF) of 16 patients affected with knee-joint effusion due to various arthropathies. The volume of SF was also calculated. Eight patients--4 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 2 with recurrent monoarthritis (RM) and 2 with osteoarthritis (OA) were randomly allocated to the treatment with intra-articular injection of Hyalgan (HA, Na-hyaluronate, 20 mg/2 ml), while eight patients having similar arthropathies--4 RA, 2 RM and 2 OA--were not treated (control group). In the patients treated with HA a significant reduction of SF volume (from 28.5 +/- 5.1 ml to 20.5 +/- 4.0 ml; p less than 0.02) and PGE2 (from 96.1 +/- 22.7 pg/ml to 66.2 +/- 14.5 pg/ml; p less than 0.05) was found, whereas cAMP concentration was significantly increased (from 4.5 +/- 0.7 pmol/ml to 7.2 +/- 1.2 pmol/ml; p less than 0.05). No significant variations were observed in the control group. Moreover, no differences in WBC count, TP and beta-2-m and CH50 were found in either group. These data could suggest an anti-inflammatory effect of HA that appears to be mediated by PG-inhibition as well as cAMP stimulation
Predictive value of synovial fluid analysis in juvenile chronic arthritis
To investigate the value of synovial fluid analysis in predicting the articular evolution of juvenile chronic arthritis, synovial fluid from 29 patients with oligoarticular onset juvenile chronic arthritis were examined prospectively. The patients were subsequently classified after a three year period of observation as having polyarticular (10 patients) or pauciarticular (19 patients) disease. The synovial fluid samples were analysed for total and differential white blood cell count, total protein, beta 2 microglobulin, and total complement activity. For comparison, synovial fluid samples from 95 patients with adult onset rheumatoid arthritis were also analysed. In patients with polyarticular disease polymorphonuclear cells and beta 2 microglobulin concentrations were higher than in the patients with pauciarticular disease (80 (29.2) v 58.1 (25.3), and 3.6 (1.2) v 2.2 (0.5) mg/l, respectively), but there was no significant difference from the patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Synovial fluid analysis may be useful in predicting the evolution of juvenile chronic arthritis and improve definition of its subtypes

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
