I fratelli Čapek a Parigi: riflessi letterari e teorico-figurativi del soggiorno in Francia

    No full text
The thesis examines how French literature and figurative arts influenced the work of Czech brothers Karel and Josef Čapek. The study stay in Paris (1910-1911) is seen as the first impulse that brought both authors to change their perspective on philosophy, representation of reality and literary experimentation. The analysis follows then each brother's independent path throughout the years, showing how the inspiration drawn from French poetry and painting can't be simply labeled as juvenile fscination. Several forms of documents are therefore scrutinized: memoirs and correspondence, essays and reviews, plays and short stories. A central chapter is focused on Karel Čapek's translations of poetry (Francouzská poezie nové doby), where possible sources and criteria of selection of the texts are discussed

The formation of shear and density layers in stably stratified trubulent flows: linear processes

The initial evolution of the momentum and buoyancy fluxes in a freely decaying, stably stratified homogeneous turbulent flow with r.m.s. velocity u′0 and integral lengthscale l0 is calculated using a weakly inhomogeneous and unsteady form of the rapid distortion theory (RDT) in order to study the growth of small temporal and spatial perturbations in the large-scale mean stratification N(z, t) and mean velocity profile u(z, t) (here N is the local Brunt–Väisälä frequency and u is the local velocity of the horizontal mean flow) when the ratio of buoyancy forces to inertial forces is large, i.e. Nl0/u′0[dbl greater-than sign]1. The lengthscale L of the perturbations in the mean profiles of stratification and shear is assumed to be large compared to l0 and the presence of a uniform background mean shear can be taken into account in the model provided that the inertial shear forces are still weaker than the buoyancy forces, i.e. when the Richardson number Ri = (N/[partial partial differential]zu)2[dbl greater-than sign]1 at each height. When a mean shear perturbation is introduced initially with no uniform background mean shear and uniform stratification, the analysis shows that the perturbations in the mean flow profile grow on a timescale of order N-1. When the mean density profile is perturbed initially in the absence of a background mean shear, layers with significant density gradient fluctuations grow on a timescale of order N−10 (where N0 is the order of magnitude of the initial Brunt–Väisälä frequency) without any associated mean velocity gradients in the layers. These results are in good agreement with the direct numerical simulations performed by Galmiche et al. (2002) and are consistent with the earlier physically based conjectures made by Phillips (1972) and Posmentier (1977). The model also shows that when there is a background mean shear in combination with perturbations in the mean stratification, negative shear stresses develop which cause the mean velocity gradient to grow in the density layers. The linear analysis for short times indicates that the scale on which the mean perturbations grow fastest is of order u′0/N0, which is consistent with the experiments of Park et al. (1994). We conclude that linear mechanisms are widely involved in the formation of shear and density layers in stratified flows as is observed in some laboratory experiments and geophysical flows, but note that the layers are also significantly influenced by nonlinear and dissipative processes at large times

This short contribution tries to link together the two main activities of Michel Galmiche : he was a semantician and he was a painter. From the kind of painting he chose, hyperrealism, I suppose that he divided in two the same intellectual project : to get apart the fallacious appearances (verbal or visual) of reality  as seen by realism or common sense and acting for a world purified of its opacity

    Slow-Light in photonic crystals waveguides

We modeled two realistic slow light structures, which are viable to be fabricated on silicon: Silicon strip waveguide photonic crystal with periodic SiO2 holes and silicon corrugated waveguide. In order to modeling these devices we carried out simulations using the Plane Wave Expansion (PWE) method and the Finite Differences in Time Domain (FDTD) method. We employed the MIT Photonic Bands (MPB) free software developed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the FDTD Solutions software developed by Lumerical Solutions Inc. Also, we analyzed the scattering originated by technological imperfections in the waveguides, known as extrinsic losses. In this analysis we used a theoretical model developed by T. Krauss group for described the losses effect in the photonic crystal waveguides. For this goal, a MPB code developed by the Krauss group was used.

A retreat in a South Korean Buddhist monastery: Becoming a lay devotee through monastic life Florence GALMICHE

International audienceIn South Korea, the distance between Buddhist monastics and lay devotees tends to reduce as monasteries and temples multiply in urban areas. Even the remote mountain monasteries have, for a large number, broadened their access to the lay visitors. Nowadays monastic and lay Buddhists have more occasions to meet than before and the current intensification of their relationships brings important redefinitions of their respective identities. The purpose of this paper is to explore to what extent and limits this new spatial proximity does signify a rapprochement between the monastic and the lay Buddhists. Through an ethnographic approach and a participant observation methodology I focus on the case of a one-week retreat for laity in a Buddhist monastery dedicated to meditation. This case study examines the ambiguous goal of this retreat program that combined two aims: initiating the lay practitioners to the monastic lifestyle and to the practice of kanhwa sŏn meditation, and also establishing a group of lay supporters affiliated to the temple. This temporary monastic experience was directed toward an intense socialisation of the participants to the norms and values of an ascetic lifestyle and, for a while, blurred some aspects of the border between lay and monastic practices of Buddhism. However, this paper presents the idea that this transitory rapprochement contributed to both challenge and strengthen the distinction between renouncers (ch'ulga) and householders (chaega)
