Ricostruzione topologica e validazione automatica della congruenza idraulica di schemi acquedottistici di adduzione informatizzati
In questo lavoro si descrive il processo di integrazione, ricostruzione topologica e validazione della banca dati GIS delle infrastrutture acquedottistiche della Regione Piemonte, operazione propedeutica
all'avvio di approfondimenti sul funzionamento delle reti di adduzione per finalità di produzione idroelettrica.
L’approccio sviluppato è basato su procedure automatiche che integrano free open source e public domain software: i moduli GRASS GIS, il database spaziale PostgreSQL/PostGIS e il software per la
verifica degli acquedotti EPANET, diffusi sia in ambito accademico sia nel mondo professionale.
L'attività ha consentito una rappresentazione della rete completamente riqualificata ed integrata con informazioni altimetriche, da cui è possibile derivare rapidamente il modello EPANET di ogni singolo impianto combinando SQL e moduli GRASS.
Nel caso gli input non siano sufficienti per concludere positivamente la simulazione, la disponibilità di rapporti diagnostici sulle anomalie di funzionamento della rete consente una successiva attività mirata di
bonifica delle anomalie e integrazione dei dati, più approfondita e completa di quanto perseguibile con generici processi di data-cleaning.
Pur con alcune ipotesi semplificative necessarie a causa dell’assenza di dati, è stato inoltre possibile
avviare l'analisi di alcuni schemi ricostruiti al fine di stimare il potenziale di producibilità idroelettrica di singoli impianti; un’applicazione del metodo è stata effettuata per alcuni casi studio per i quali fossero disponibili risultati ottenuti attraverso precedenti metodi semplificati, poi validati mediante analisi di dettaglio
Long term monitoring of noise pollution in social gatherings places: time analysis and acoustic capacity as supports of management strategies
City of Torino (Italy), as many European cities, is facing noise pollution related to recreational noise of nightlife in open urban areas, such as streets, squares and terraces, where thousands of people meet spending all evening and night time. Noise from people speaking in these spaces can be very loud, due to crowd levels (since communication is possible only with a raised voice level) and people behavior.
This study shows the analysis of long term noise data collected in two years by a low-cost IoT network in San Salvario area. It highlighted regularities on night levels, mainly on a weekly basis with a seasonality.
Preliminary investigations on time series have been developed, in order to correlate noise levels and number of people involved, coupling environmental noise data and crowd sensors. Moreover, the concept of ‘Acoustic Capacity’ related to the noise levels has been investigated.
This approach based on a deeper quantitative knowledge is explored as an help to local administration and stakeholders in planning and implementing mitigation actions
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Disaster Tales as Communication Tool for Increasing Risk Resilience
Agencies in charge of flood management use disaster reports (DRs) as the preferred source of information on past flooding events. A systematic survey of DRs prepared by Italian agencies suggests that DRs could be widely enhanced in view of targeting more effective communication to citizens, reinforcing the communication pillar in civil protection planning and management, and improving the resilience of the population to extreme events. Without loss of the rigor and details required for all the usual technical uses of DRs, we suggest recompiling them in the form of “disaster tales” (DTs), as tools that offer wider knowledge of the events to improve people’s preparedness and self-protection behavior. Recent major flooding events have demonstrated the communication potential that videos and pictures taken by citizens have for risk perception and disaster preparedness. By watching and listening to what has happened the communication recipient can better understand the feelings of the people experiencing an emergency. The structure of the improved reports, we suggest, will finally integrate data, graphs, and maps with interactive tools and be able to present handier multimedia views of the events. Application to three case studies of flooding in Italy illustrates how to concretely implement the suggested disaster reports to create more readily accessible disaster tales
Prediction of off-site noise levels reduction in open-air music events within densely populated urban areas
Performances in open-air settings create challenges in terms of noise pollution, which has to be controlled by the organizers within the limits set by the local authorities that aim to preserve the comfort and health of local residents. In this study, an integrated approach has been developed to control the off-site noise levels, in the framework of H2020 MONICA project. To this purpose, Kappa Futur Festival, an open-air multi stage Electronic music festival attended by more than 50 thousand people, has been considered as a case study. A comprehensive set of actions
was put in place for off-site noise predictions using SoundPlan®, a noise modelling software. A measurement campaign through a noise monitoring network was performed during the two days event showing the relevance of the low-frequencies content. The data have been used for calibration of the simulation model. The simulations allowed to pinpoint which sound system, i.e. stage, could cause the dominant noise off-site so that potentially breaches the regulations. The results showed that future editions of the Festival would benefit from feasible mitigations
and optimization actions, i.e. variations of stage loudspeaker arrays, stage orientations and FOH level control, by also preserving the optimal levels for the audience
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
