Adsorptive removal of cadmium(II) ions from aqueous solution by using Red pine Sawdust (Pinus brutia Ten.)
In this study, the potential usage of red pine sawdust (Pinus brutia Ten.), as an effective and low cost adsorbent, in removal of Cd(II) ions which is a toxic heavy metal, from aqueous solutions by adsorption technique has been investigated. The red pine sawdust has been utilized without any physical or chemical pretreatment. After being characterized the red pine sawdust by FTIR, pHpzc and moisture content, the effects of experimental parameters including initial solution pH, contact time, adsorbent amount and initial Cd(II) concentration have been evaluated and also the effects of some salts which present in industrial wastewaters have been investigated. From the obtained results the optimum initial pH was specified as 6.0 and the contact time was 240 minute. In order to clarify the adsorption mechanism different kinetics (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion models) and isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin ve Dubinin Radushkevich) were fitted to experimental data. From the results, it was seen that the adsorption kinetics followed by the pseudo second order model. The maximum adsorption capacity of red pine sawdust was calculated as 11.88 mg/g by using Langmuir isotherm model. The results of this study indicated that the red pine sawdust (Pinus brutia Ten.) can be used as an effective adsorbent in removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions
Long Memory in the Turkish Stock Market Return and Volatility
This paper examines the dual long memory property of the Turkish stock market. The data set consists of daily returns, and long memory tests are carried out both for the returns and volatility. The results indicate that long memory dynamics in the returns and volatility might be modeled by using the ARFIMA-FIGARCH model. The results of the ARFIMAFIGARCH model show strong evidence of long memory in both returns and volatility. The long memory in returns implies that stock prices follow a predictable behavior, which is inconsistent with the efficient market hypothesis. The evidence of long memory in volatility, however, shows that uncertainty or risk is an important determinant of the behavior of daily stock data in the Turkish stock market.ARFIMA, FIGARCH, Long memory, Turkish stock market
Roman’s Diminutions : How a transcription can help a violinist understand composed ornaments, Johan Helmich Roman’s diminutions over Archangelo Corelli’s Violin sonata no 4 op 5, Adagio 1
This thesis is a violinists study of diminutions (ornaments; improvisation around an already composed melody) composed by Johann Helmich Roman over the first movement of Archangelo Corelli’s violin sonata no 4 op 5. In order to perform the diminutions the author of this thesis made a transcription of Roman’s handwritten sheet music. This thesis also contains necessary background information for the subject, such as biographies over Roman and Corelli. In the end of the thesis the author is discussing why Roman wrote these diminutions, the author’s thoughts on performing them and if the transcription helped preparing the performance.Repertoire: Archangelo Corelli; Violin sonata no 4 op.5 "Adagio 1", with diminutions by Johan Helmich RomanBaroque violinist in the recording; Torun Fredberg (author)Harpsichordist in the recording; Mayumi Kamata</p
Housing in Torun in the years 1945–1949
Housing was a basic element of the urban economy since the beginning of the People’s Republic
of Poland. The author, basing on the example of the city of Torun, has attempted to illustrate
what he believes to be the most important issues concerning the implementation of the party and
municipal authorities’ policy with regard to housing space. This article follows the dynamics of changes
in housing construction, the activities of state institutions managing the creation of new housing
space as well as the using of the existing one. The article also contains information about the origins
of the company’s housing construction.
The article is based on archival materials produced by the organizational units, structurally
subordinated to: the administration of the city of Torun and the region of Pomerania, political parties
(PPR/PZPR) as well as the Ministry of Reconstruction. If needed, the author relied on the legal acts
(laws, decrees, regulations etc.) and existing literature concerning the subjectGospodarka mieszkaniowa od początku istnienia Polski Ludowej stanowiła podstawowy człon
gospodarki miejskiej. Autor na przykładzie miasta Torunia podjął starania zilustrowania, najważniejszych
jego zdaniem, zagadnień dotyczących realizacji polityki władz partyjnych i municypalnych
względem przestrzeni lokalowej. W artykule została prześledzona, m. in. dynamika ruchu budowlanego
w mieszkalnictwie, działalność instytucji państwowych administrujących gospodarką lokalową,
a także początki zakładowego budownictwa mieszkaniowego.

Reactivity difference between protolytic forms of some macrocyclic chromium(III) complexes in ligand substitution and electron transfer processes
The review provides insight into the mechanism of ligand substitution and electron transfer (from chromium( III) to iron(III)) by comparison of the reactivity of some tetraazamacrocyclic chromium(III) complexes in the conjugate acid-base forms. Use of two geometrical isomers made possible to estimate the influence of geometry and protolytic reactions in trans and cis position towards the leaving group on the rate enhancement. Studies on the reaction rates in different media demonstrated the role played by outer sphere interactions in a monodentate ligand substitution
Employee survey as a form of personal marketing (on example of own desk researches in Torun)
The author made an attempt of answering the question concerning the meaning of personal marketing and employee survey for enterprises. The advantages of properly prepared and conducted researches are invaluable and give a possibility to get very important information about the company and its environment. Although the range of the phenomenon does not seem to be wide, it is still surprising that the most valuable data a company may nowadays reach of the employee survey, can be ignored. The author?s conclusions were supported by the previous results obtained from the research that had been conducted in 2008 by telephone interview and Internet among the enterprises in Torun
The plan of the siege of Torun in 1658 from the Vienna Archive of War
The plan of the siege of Torun, preserved in the Vienna Archive of War (Kriegsarchiv) is the perfect documentation of one of the most important events of the Polish-Sweden war of 1655-1660. It includes a detailed presentation of the city and its suburbs, along with numerous details and the positions occupied by the besieging army (in particular the emperor’s army). It includes a key with 91 entries. It is signed by its author – Johan Eusebius Mayer. The document is a valuable source for research on Torun’s fortifications during the times of the Swedish wars. It has been established that the plan was a basis for the so called Italian plan of the siege of Torun – the etching included in the history of Emperor Leopold I published in the Italian language in 1669
Oldest letters of Kaunas City Council obtained from the funds of the State Archives of Torun
Reikšminiai žodžiai: Kaunas; Kauno istorija; Kauno miestas; Laiškai; Laiškai; Mietos taryba; Prekyba; Torunė; Torunės pirkliai; Torunės valstybinis archyvas; Vokiečių Ordinas (Teutonic Order; Kryžiuočių ordinas); City council; Kaunas; Kaunas city; Kaunas history; Letter; State Archives of Torun; Torun merchants; TradeThe article analyses four letters found in the State Archives of Torun which are related to Kaunas history. The oldest letter written by Vilnius castellan and Kaunas elder Sudovijus Valmantaitis dates back to 22 November, 1453. It is addressed to the marshal of the Order of the Cross Knights. It has to be mentioned that the letter has already been published in historical literature. The second letter under analysis was written to the council of Torun approximately in 1400; however its author is still questionable. Chorążyczewski opposes the opinion of historians Gumowski and Rimša who claim that the letter was written by Kaunas council and rejects its connections with Kaunas. The third letter was written on 13 September, 1490 by Kaunas city council. The council threatens that they will hold the ships of Torun merchants if Totun holds Kaunas ships. The most valuable letter in author's opinion is the fourth letter written by Kaunas city council on 8 January, 1511. Torun city council is requested to send friends of Henrich Bauch who would redeem his movable property because of his debts to the merchant of Gdansk Jakub Melman. The importance of the letter is twofold: first, very few examples of Kaunas office of the analyzed period can be found; second, the letter evidences how Kaunas council dealt with affairs of a similar kind. The letter under discussion is published together with the article
Multicomponent Mechanical Characterization of Atherosclerotic Human Coronary Arteries: An Experimental and Computational Hybrid Approach
Atherosclerotic plaque rupture in coronary arteries, an important trigger of myocardial infarction, is shown to correlate with high levels of pressure-induced mechanical stresses in plaques. Finite element (FE) analyses are commonly used for plaque stress assessment. However, the required information of heterogenous material properties of atherosclerotic coronaries remains to be scarce. In this work, we characterized the component-wise mechanical properties of atherosclerotic human coronary arteries. To achieve this, we performed ex vivo inflation tests on post-mortem human coronary arteries and developed an inverse FE modeling (iFEM) pipeline, which combined high-frequency ultrasound deformation measurements, a high-field magnetic resonance-based artery composition characterization, and a machine learning-based Bayesian optimization (BO) with uniqueness assessment. By using the developed pipeline, 10 cross-sections from five atherosclerotic human coronary arteries were analyzed, and the Yeoh material model constants of the fibrous intima and arterial wall components were determined. This work outlines the developed pipeline and provides the knowledge of non-linear, multicomponent mechanical properties of atherosclerotic human coronary arteries.Medical Instruments & Bio-Inspired Technolog
