Aims: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an ergonomic structure by Multifocal Vibrations (MFV) on body balance in healthy subjects. The aim was to find out a correlation between the postural equilibrium and an ergonomic structure that leads to a muscular release and a redistribution of plantar loads. Materials and Methods: Fifteen volunteers (7 males and 8 females, aged 19-25 years) underwent stabilometry before the Multifocal Vibration and immediately after it, 4 times a month on regular pauses. The group was evaluated at time T0 (I week), T1 (II week), T2 (III week), T3 (IV week). The subjects were I molar and canine class, with facial symmetry, without temporomandibular diseases. Keope is the ergonomic structure used in this protocol. Biopostural system platform was used in this study. Results: From a postural point of view, in each single session there was an improvement in the loads distribution and in the position of the barycenter according to the ideal axis. This change however doesn’t remain from one session to another: the postural system is too much susceptible to external factors (physical activity, weariness, emotions ecc.) to keep the changes obtained thanks to Keope. Conclusions: It’s possible to affirm that the MFV leads to important changes in the postural system, although these changes are not stable

Objectives. The aim of this study is to analyze the electromyographic and electrognatographic results deriving from 10 patients subjected to rapid palatal expansion, before and after the expansion, and to find out a relationship between the results. Materials and methods. The sample consisted of 10 children (6 females and 4 males; range: 9-13 years) with bilateral maxillary hypoplasia, and subjected to an electromyographic and electrognatographic exam before and after rapid palatal expansion. Results. By analyzing the results, it is possible to observe an increased electrical activity of the masticatory muscles (right and left masseter, right and left anterior temporalis) both in rest position and during the exercises of the different acquisitions, at the end of the active phase of the rapid palatal expansion. Conclusions. After the rapid palatal expansion the muscular activity increases: the expansion, though it does not act directly on the masticatory muscles, produces important changes in the muscular tone

Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Global Proprioceptive Resonance (GPR) by Multifocal Vibrations (MFV) on muscle performance in healthy subjects. The aim was to find out a correlation between the neuromuscular system (electromyographic, electrognatographic activity) and an ergonomic structure that leads to a muscular release. The sample was analyzed at time T0 (before the ergonomic structure) and at time T1 (after the ergonomic structure). Materials and Methods: Thirty volunteers (sixteen males and fourteen females, aged 19-25 years) underwent, in a randomized order, both the electromyography and the electrognathography (EMG - EKG) before (time T0) the multi focal vibration and immediately after it (time T1). The volunteers had some common features: I molar and canine class, facial symmetry, no temporomandibular joint (TMJ) diseases and no systemic diseases. Keope is the ergonomic structure used in this protocol: it gives a psyco-physical release thanks to multifocal vibrations. K6-Myotronics EMG-EKG has used in this study. Results: The results showed a significant improvement in the neuromuscular activity. Muscular activity meanly decreases, while the Freeway Space increases in 53% of cases: this is the evidence of a muscular release after Keope. The effects of MFV on the surface EMG of masseters and anterior temporalis muscles induced statistically significant change in masseters muscles (p<0.05). Conclusions: In this preliminary study it was concluded that the multifocal vibration (MFV) induced changes in neuromuscular system. Further and future studies should focus on evaluating the effects on orthodontic and temporomandibular disease patients, as well as the long term effects

Objectives: The aim of this study was the evaluation of the neuromuscular response to treatment according to diagnostic phases, as a follow-up of patients under surgical orthodontic treatment. The patient sample was subdivided into sub-samples, according to clinical characteristics. Materials and methods: All of the patients who underwent orthognathic surgery in the Department of Orthodontics (University of Milan) were subjected to periodic electromyographic evaluation of the masticatory muscles (masseter and anterior temporal muscles), and to electrokinesiographic evaluation of the mandibular movements. The patient sample comprised 80 patients (37 males; and 43 females) at the end of growth. The electromyographic instruments used in the study included a Freely and a K6-I electromyography. Statistical evaluation was carried out with the Student's t-tests for independent samples. Results: There are many differences between the skeletal Class II and skeletal Class III patients that are shown through the analysis of these data obtained. In the beginning phases of the treatment the muscular activities were higher in the Class II patients than in the Class III patients. Nevertheless this difference was reversed at the end of the treatment. A similar difference could be found in the mandibular kinesiology, in fact the maximum mandibular opening movement was greater in the skeletal Class II patients than in the skeletal Class III patients at the beginning of the treatment. At the end of the treatment this difference was lost. At the beginning of the treatment the Class II patients showed a greater protrusive movement of the mandibular than the Class III patients. At the end the treatment however this gap was reduced without being reversed. Conclusions: Functional evaluation in patients in surgical orthodontic therapy is an important element in the diagnostic-therapeutic recordings, so as to reduce as much as possible any incorrect neuromuscular activity that can result in relapse

Obiettivi. Objectives. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of rapid palatal expansion (RPE) on the electrical activity of the masticator muscles (masseter and anterior temporalis) by means of electromyography and to report the case of a young patient who underwent electromyography before and after RPE activation. Materials and methods. Description of the case and the objectives of the different electromyographic scans performed. Results. Analysis of pre- and post-RPE electromyographic data showed that palatal expansion was followed by bilateral increases in the electrical activity (resting and during the exam-related exercises) of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles. Conclusions. The authors discuss factors that can influence the electrical activity of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles. Analysis of the electromyographic data confirms the strong correlation between the activity of these muscles and RPE, which increases the tone of the muscles at rest and during electromyographic exercises

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
