La forma escatologica del sacramento. Evento della Parola

    No full text

    No full text

    No full text

Clinical evaluation of probucol in hypercholesteremia: individual lipoprotein responses and inhibitory effect on carotid atherosclerosis progression

    No full text
Probucol treatment has been evaluated in 140 patients with hypercholesterolemia attending a single Lipid Clinic, in an attempt to identify the relations between lipid/lipoprotein responses and patient characteristics. Probucol was administered as a single drug at the standard dose (0.5 g tablets b.i.d.) for at least 6 months. One-hundred (71%) patients displayed a reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), which was significantly correlated with the baseline LDL-C level (r = 0.64; p < 0.0001). Most of the patients (90%) also responded with a reduction of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C); the HDL-C reduction was also directly related to baseline HDL cholesterolemia (r = 0.67, p < 0.0001). A highly significant correlation was found between the individual LDL-C and HDL-C responses. Eleven patients who continued with probucol treatment had a B-mode ultrasonographic investigation performed at baseline and after 24 months. No changes in carotid mean and maximal intimal-medial thickness were recorded, in contrast to an increase (i.e., indicative of atherosclerosis progression) in matched patients with hypercholesterolemia receiving other lipid-lowering regimens. Our report underlines that probucol can still provide a valuable option for the treatment for hypercholesterolemia, being particularly effective in patients with a combined increase of LDL-C and HDL-C levels

Test procedures for the evaluation of defect tolerance of electrically-stressed polymers

The influence of conductive defects, able to amplify electric field magnitude, on insulation breakdown is investigated in this paper by short-term tests. Appropriate test cells were used, made according to a Rogowski profile, where a set of semiconductive needle-shaped indents starting from the outer surface is realized. Samples of XLPE specimens were tested, differing for the types of additives used as voltage stabilizer and electrical tree retardant. The results of electric strength measurements are dealt with in the paper, with the purpose to show that the proposed test cell provides Weibull-distributed breakdown data, characterized by acceptable confidence intervals and repeatability. This enables an effective comparison between materials, even in the case that the presence of additives does not change remarkably material performances. Moreover, the multiplicity of indents helps in averaging the considerable influence of the curvature radius of needles, which may play a fundamental role in the usual test cells realized by needle-plane electrode configuration

Some remarks regarding the test cells used for electric strength measurements

This paper deals with the influence of the test cell on the results of electric strength measurements performed on polymeric materials. Two different types of electrodes are considered, i.e. rods and Pseudo-Rogosky configurations, surrounded by different media, that is, oil, SF6, and epoxy resin. An Ethylene-Propylene-Rubber (EPR)-based insulation was tested, in the form of flat specimens having different thickness. The results show that the scale and shape parameters of the two-parameter Weibull function employed to fit the breakdown data significantly changes when different specimen thickness, surrounding media and types of electrodes are used

Clinical response to probucol in hypercholesterolemia: peculiar sensitivity of different subpopulations

The effectiveness of probucol therapy in group of 140 hypercholesterolemic patients who had been treated with probucol for at least six months, up to two years, was investigated in this study. The responses, in terms of individual percentage reduction of plasma LDL-C levels, have been evaluated trying to assess the sensitivity of specific subgroups of patients and their response to treatment. Clinical data and plasma lipid/lipoprotein levels were determined at baseline, at the sixth month and then at the end of 2 years. To identify and characterize subpopulation showing different sensitivity to the probucol treatment, the effectiveness of probucol therapy was related to the sex hormonal status and major lipid or non lipid parameters. Response to probucol was evaluated after stratification of patients by sex, tertiles of HDL-C levels (at baseline) and pre-/post-menopausal status in women. After six months plasma LDL-C levels was reduced of 7.0%. Stratifying patients into tertiles of HDL-C levels, the LDL-C response after six months of treatment was about 8.30% in the higher tertile group, vs a 6.5% of the lower. However in all patients who have been treated and followed for 2 years, the maximum LDL-C reduction was achieved at the end of the second year (11.6%

The right to a good State

This article shows the reflection of Guillermo O ‘Donnell on modern forms of military authoritarianism, democratization and the challenges of the process of institutionalization of democracy in Latin America. The author, in Democracia, agencia y estado develops democratic theory “with comparative intent” to allow open lines of theoretical discussion and empirical research on the experience of democratization in countries that do not belong to what he calls `the Northwest quadrant of the world´. The inspiration for this theory, the author explains, is the concern for the failings that have several contemporary Latin American democracies.Fil: Peruzzotti, Carlos Enrique.
