Consumers’ satisfaction and regulation of local public transport: evidence from European cities
In recent decades, market-opening policies in local public transport (LPT) have impacted most European countries. However, we can observe a high degree of variability in possible LPT arrangements, from public monopolies to open markets. This work addresses the following research question: How does user satisfaction correlate to alternative organisational models of LPT service provision? We use the results of a large survey conducted in 2009 in 33 European cities to analyse the likelihood of satisfaction with standard probit models. Results show that the highest levels of satisfaction correlate with the presence of a single LPT provider, as opposed to an industry structure in which multiple providers operate in the same market area
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Travelers' satisfaction with railway transport: a Bayesian network approach
Survey data are often employed as a tool to support planners in defining and reviewing their intervention programs and policies. In the current literature, a broad range of studies have examined the determinants and components of consumers’ satisfaction. Most of these studies have exploited statistical models, such as probit or logit, to determine the categorical dependent variables. Less attention has been paid to the investigation of the structural properties of the data by testing alternative methods and procedures. The present work performs such an analysis using data from a survey on consumer satisfaction from railway transport in 14 EU countries. The data were collected in a large survey (more than 17,000 observations) conducted on behalf of the European Commission. By applying both ordered logistic regression and Bayesian Network (BN) analysis, the research question addressed by this paper is twofold. First of all, the performance of the two methodologies, defined in terms of their predictive capability, is assessed. Secondly, the main policy implications conveyed by the two models are compared. According to the results, BN analysis provides better predictions of the outcomes of customers’ satisfaction with railway transport. Moreover, the choice of the statistical methodology is a relevant issue for policy-making, since the policy messages conveyed by the two models differ significantly

The economic effects of Covid-19 in Italian regions. Evidence, expectations, policies
The effects of COVID-19 on the Italian economy were uneven across regions, with a slightly more severe impact in the North and a slower recovery in the South. The main determinants of the observed differences are investigated, focusing on regional struc-tural factors such as sectoral composition, propensity to remote working, availability of human capital and technology, international openness, participation in global value chains. The analysis on short-term resilience in 2020 is complemented by a discussion on perspectives of growth for the 2021-2024 period, highlighting the elements of weakness of the Southern economy and the role possibly played by public policies
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
