Analog-based meandering channel simulation
Characterizing the complex geometries and the heterogeneity of the deposits in meandering river systems is a long-standing issue for the 3-D modeling of alluvial formations. Such deposits are important sources of accessible groundwater in alluvial aquifers throughout the world and also play a major role as hydrocarbons reservoirs. In this paper, we present a method to generate meandering river centerlines that are stochastic, geologically realistic, connected, and conditioned to local observations or global geomorphological characteristics. The method is based on fast 1-D multiple-point statistics in a transformed curvilinear domain: the succession in directions observed in a real-world meandering river (the analog) is considered as statistical model for multiple-point statistics simulation. The integration of local data is accomplished by an inverse procedure ensuring that the channels pass through a given set of locations while conserving the high-order spatial characteristics of an analog. The methodology is applied on seven real-world case studies. This work demonstrates the flexibility and the applicability of multiple-point statistics outside the standard paradigm that considers the simulation of a 2-D or 3-D variable with spatial coordinates
High resolution multi-facies realizations of sedimentary reservoir and aquifer analogs
Geological structures are by nature inaccessible to direct observation. This can cause difficulties in applications where a spatially explicit representation of such structures is required, in particular when modelling fluid migration in geological formations. An increasing trend in recent years has been to use analogs to palliate this lack of knowledge, i.e., exploiting the spatial information from sites where the geology is accessible (outcrops, quarry sites) and transferring the observed properties to a study site deemed geologically similar. While this approach is appealing, it is difficult to put in place because of the lack of access to well-documented analog data. In this paper we present comprehensive analog data sets which characterize sedimentary structures from important groundwater hosting formations in Germany and Brazil. Multiple 2-D outcrop faces are described in terms of hydraulic, thermal and chemical properties and interpolated in 3-D using stochastic techniques. These unique data sets can be used by the wider community to implement analog approaches for characterizing reservoir and aquifer formations
Hybrid geostatistics: object-based simulations using MPS-generated meandering channels
Object-based simulation methods are some of the most widely used approaches for modeling geological reservoirs and quantifying geological uncertainty. However, one major drawback of the object-based approach is its lack of flexibility. The objects are often defined with basic analytical shapes, and as such they may not reflect the complexity of the actual geobodies present in the subsurface. This results in models that lack realism, as well as difficulties in conditioning especially in the presence of dense datasets.
To tackle these issues, we propose to stochastically generate objects using an analog-based approach.
Instead of defining objects by a limited number of parameters, objects are produced by using a multiple-point geostatistics (MPS) algorithm, which is a non-parametric process. Each new object is then drawn from an ensemble of possible members, all presenting similar statistical properties than a given reference object, namely a training image
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
GIM (Groundwater Integrated Modelling). The hydrogeological compiler
Complex problems in Earth Sciences demand the use of numerical models. To this end, a large number of codes have been developed during the last two decades. In spite of their power, as displayed in their many applications, these codes are sparse
and, most often, used in the academic framework. To make things worse, they are aimed at solving a given set of physical phenomena (e.g. most codes solve groundwater flow and contaminant transport, but they do not take into account material defor-
mation, others include deformation but not heat transfer, etc.) and most often they do not integrate stochastic techniques.
GIM (Groundwater Integrated Modelling) is aimed at providing a platform to fill this gap. The objective is to integrate the existing codes in an overall fully-parallel object oriented FORTRAN 95 structure. Thus, the capabilities of GIM are numerous (differ-
ent solvers of direct and inverse problem, of groundwater flow, contaminant (conservative or not) or heat transport, etc.) as it takes profit of those of the codes embedded in its structure.
The use of GIM is illustrated with a simple example consisting of a Monte Carlo analysis of flow and transport problem:
1. Read data common to most of the existing “host” codes (finite elements or finite differences mesh, geostatistical model, state variable measurements, etc.) in an XML fashion. “Host” code particular variables (options, tolerances, convergence criteria, etc.) are supplied separately.
2. The data are used to pre-process the initial hydraulic conductivity fields on the basis of the geostatistical model. These fields will be calibrated in step 4.3. Write data in the appropriate format for the “host” code.
4. Execute “host” code(s). In this example, an inversion code is used. However, many codes can be used at step 4 (e.g. for solving the inherent direct problem, modeller can use a flow simulator to calculate the velocity field driving the con-
taminant transport, which will be simulated using a “raw” transport simulator).
5. Collect results (the calibrated fields).
6. Post-process the output (e.g. histogram of hydraulic conductivity).
Including “host” codes in the overall structure of GIM is easy. One needs to add a routine for writing data at step 3 and a routine for reading the output at step 5. This confers versatility and an ample room for future developments
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
