Uniform Estimates of the fundamental solution for a family of hypoelliptic operators
In this paper we are concerned with a family of elliptic operators L-epsilon represented as sum of square vector fields, whose limit is an Hormander type operator L. It is well known that each operator L_epsilon
admits a fundamental solution. Here we establish a priori estimates uniform in epsilon of the fundamental solution, using a generalization
of the freezing and lifting technique of Rothschild and Stein. As
a consequence we deduce some a priori estimates uniform in epsilon,
for solutions of the approximated equation. These
estimates can be used in particular while studying regularity of
viscosity solutions of nonlinear equations represented in terms of
vector fields
Blow-up in non homogeneous Lie groups and rectifiability,
In this paper we extend the De Giorgi notion of rectifiability of surfaces in non homogeneous Lie groups. This notion and the principal properties of Cacciopoli sets had already been proved in homogeneous Lie group, using a blow-up method, with respect to the natural dilations. In non homogeneous Lie groups no dilations are defined, so that we need to apply a freezing method, locally approximating the non homogeneous structure, with an homogeneous one

Chronobiologic aspects of recurrent transient ischemic attack.
An epidemiologic study was conducted from 1979 through 1984 on subjects presenting transitory ischemic attacks (TIA) and admitted into our Institute. We investigated year, season, month, day, and hour of every attack on 80 patients aged between 51 and 88 years. Time-series analysis showed a seasonal pattern of disease onset in early spring. Peaks occurred in March-April, and isolated peaks were also detected in January and October. Concerning TIA-onset day, we observed a peak distribution in the last 10 days of the month. Data on the hour of onset, according to single cosinor (mesor +/- SE = 2.67 + 1.13; amplitude +/- SE = 2.57 + 1.13), yielded a significant (P less than 0.05) acrophase. The acrophase is at -135 degrees (-93 degrees, -245 degrees) for tau = 48 hr
Implicit function theorem in Carnot-Caratheodory spaces
In this paper we study the notion of regular surface in non homogeneous Lie groups. In
particular we prove an implicitly function theorem and prove the
regularity of the function implicitly defined. Indeed the
implicit function theorem had already been proved in homogeneous
Lie groups by [FSS], while the regularity problem of the function
implicitly defined was still open even in the simplest Lie group
Demographic responses to short-term stress in a 19th century Tuscan population: The case of household out-migration
This paper deals with the relationship between household emigration and short-term crisis in a rural community of mid-19th century Tuscany. Based on a detailed reconstruction of individual and household life-histories, the paper shows the close relationship between household emigration and different kinds of short-term stresses, either economic, epidemiologic or within the household. Despite the different response by SES - with the poorest strata of the population much exposed to price changes and mortality crisis - the death of the household head appears as one of the most powerful factor of household emigration.emigration, household, Italy, sharecropping, short-term stress
