ABxM.DistributedRobotics.RP19: Agent-Based Models for a Modular Collective Robotic Construction System

    No full text
ABxM.DistributedRobotics.RP19 is an add-on to ABxM.Core for agent-based modelling of a collective robotic construction (CRC) system developed in the context of Research Project 19-1 (RP19-1) "Leveraging The Building Material As Part Of The Robotic Kinematic System For Parallel Construction" from the Cluster of Excellence Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture (IntCDC). The add-on contains three agent constructs which revolve around the agent representing the building material or the mobile robots in the modelled CRC system. The agent constructs of BuildingMaterialAgent or MobileRobotAgent are utlized for the sole purpose of architectural design while the agent construct of KCAgent can be used to also robotically plan the structure. The first two constructs are discussed in the paper: Leder, S., Menges, A. (2023). Introducing Agent-Based Modeling Methods for Designing Architectural Structures with Multiple Mobile Robotic Systems. In: Gengnagel, C., Baverel, O., Betti, G., Popescu, M., Thomsen, M.R., Wurm, J. (eds) Towards Radical Regeneration. DMS 2022. Springer, Cham. (DOI: 10.1007/978-3-031-13249-0_7). And the other construct is discussed in the paper: Leder, S., Menges, A.: 2024, Merging architectural design and robotic planning using interactive agent-based modelling for collective robotic construction. Journal of Computational Design and Engineering, Vol. 11, pp. 253-268. (DOI: 10.1093/jcde/qwae028). The package includes examples files to be to be used within Rhino/Grasshopper that demonstrate implementations of each agent type

Immigrants’ regrets: The role of regulatory focus and social comparison.

    No full text
The present study examines immigrants’ regret about their decision to emigrate. One hundred and ninety-six immigrants who had emigrated to the UK completed a questionnaire containing scales measuring regulatory focus (prevention and promotion), social comparison with compatriots in the country of origin, uncertainty aversion, perceived discrimination and regret. As expected, the results showed that immigrants with a predominance of prevention (vs. promotion) focus experienced more regret about their decision to emigrate. Furthermore, upward social comparison with compatriots in the country of origin, uncertainty aversion and perceived discrimination were all associated with greater regret. Interestingly, interactive effects also emerged among the key variables of the study. First, the relationship between negative social comparison with compatriots in the country of origin and regret was more pronounced among individuals with a greater prevalence of prevention (vs. promotion) focus. Second, the relationship between perceived discrimination and regret was more pronounced among individuals with a greater prevalence of prevention (vs. promotion) focus. Third, the relationship between uncertainty aversion and regret was more pronounced among individuals with a greater prevalence of prevention (vs. promotion) focus. Theoretical and applied implications of these findings are discussed

LAND VS WATER: LANDSCAPE AS AN “OPEN CONFLICT” IN THE PO RIVER DELTA REGION

    No full text
This paper aims to describe the long process that has characterized the regional planning effort for the Po River Delta area and the particular development regulations for this territory, in this unique area of Italy, where water still plays an important social, economic and cultural role. The ongoing planning process seems to be an unresolved “open conflict” reflecting the forced compromise between an ambitious economic growth strategy and the preservation needs of an extraordinary natural and cultural resource. This paper will present some reflections starting from two different instruments of regional planning: the master plan of Ferrara and the strategic coastal master plan of the Po Delta Park. In both cases the aquatic network, and its associated ecosystem, is considered as part of the new local development scenario

Mathematics, computers in mathematics, and gender: public perceptions in context

    No full text
In Australia, national tests of mathematics achievement continue showing small but consistent gender differences in favor of boys. Societal views and pressures are among the factors invoked to explain such subtle but persistent differences. In this paper we focus directly on the beliefs of the general public about students’ learning of mathematics and the role played by computers, and then we compare the findings with data previously gathered from students. Although many considered it inappropriate to differentiate between boys and girls, gender based stereotyping was still evident
