From Oil to Magnetic Fields: Active and Passive Vibration Control
When a reduction of vibration amplitude usually designers resort to dampers based either on dry friction, internal material damping or fluid viscosity, each one of these mechanisms having its peculiar field of application. To improve performance while at the same time reducing costs and environmental load, electromagnetic damping devices are finding new applications, beyond the fields where they have a long history. Moreover, electromagnetic dampers can be easily controlled, obtain active or even ‘intelligent’ vibration control. Three examples from the internal combustion engines, automotive and gas turbine fields are discussed in some detail to show the potential advantages of this technology

Multiple DNA variant association analysis: application to the insulin gene region in type 1 diabetes
Association and linkage studies have shown that at leastone of the genetic factors involved in susceptibility to insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is containedwithin a 4.1-kb region of the insulin gene. Sequence analysishas led to the identification of 10 DNA variants in thisregion that are associated with increased risk for IDDM.These variants are in strong linkage disequilibrium witheach other, and previous studies have failed to distinguishbetween the variant(s) that cause increased susceptibilityto IDDM and others that are associated with the diseasebecause of linkage disequilibrium. To address this problem,we have undertaken a large population study ofFrench diabetics and controls and have analyzed genotypepatterns for several of the variant sites simultaneously. This has led to the identification of a subset consisting offour variants (-2733AC, -23HphI, -365VNTR, and+1140AC), at least one of which appears to be directlyimplicated in disease susceptibility. The multiple-DNAvariantassociation-analysis approach that is applied hereto the problem of identifying potential susceptibility variantsin IDDM is likely to be important in studies of manyother multifactorial diseases
Modélisation des effets de site sismiques dans les bassins sédimentaires et influence des non-linéarités de comportement des sols
This work deals with the local response of sedimentary basins to weak and strong seismic waves, using numerical modeling. At low strain level, 2D/3D theoretical basins are used for linear site effects studies : in the case of 3D symetrical basin, existance conditions of «3D resonance» are given, function of geometrical and rheological parameters. ln 2D case, seismic response of two alpine valleys are modelised : the results are consistent with observed phenomena. At large strain level, the 3D formulation of a viscolelastic nonlinear model is suggested. Its implementation in a 1 D code using finite element method can be applied to a real case (Kushiro earthquake, 1993). Results obtained are compared to those of other models and to a real surface record.linéarités de comportement des sols Cette thèse traite de la réponse locale de bassins sédimentaires à des mouvements sismiques faible et fort en utilisant la modélisation numérique (SEM et FEM).

Preliminary studies of Eucheuma cottonii (Rhodophyta) from the Toliara Area, Madagascar
Euchcuma cottollii is a species of red algae found 011 the littoral of the Toliara area (Madagascar). It occupies alarge area in the north of the Great Reef of Toliara facing the village of Amboaboaka. An ecological study and anevaluation of economic potential were made. The preliminary study of the phycocolloid of this species shows thatit has carrageenan yield of 50% and that its gel strength reaches 226 g cm-2.
Seaweeds have long been used as soil fertilizers, as feed, in the human diet (Delepine, 19X9) and for production of phycocolloids. Mc Hugh ( 1993) estimated the world production of Euchcul1la (Rhodophyta) for the extraction of carrageenans to be about 66 000 tons per ycar.In Madagascar Gelidium madagascariense is extensively exploited (Andriamampandry (1976),and in 1986 the Society "Le Martin Pecheur", based in Fort Dauphin, exported 300 tons of G. madagascariense.Publishe
