The Value of Truth/The Truth of Value. Proceedings of the International Seminar Nomologics 1. Pavia, Residenza Golgi, 14th-16th July 2011
This book concerns the relationship between truth and value in philosophy of law, ethics, deontics. It presents fourteen new essays by eminent scholars (among which John Searle, Amedeo G. Conte, Roberta De Monticelli, Matjaz Potrc). Most of these contributions were presented at the International Seminar Nomologics 1, organized by Stefano Colloca and Paolo Di Lucia at the Residenza Golgi in Pavia. The main problem areas investigated are these: the problem of the relationship between judgements concerning truth and judgements concerning values; the problem of the truth-value of axiological judgements
Health-related quality of life assessment in prospective trials of systemic cytotoxic chemotherapy for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer: which instrument we need?
Knowledge about psychological health of men with prostate cancer is still limited. HRQoL assessment adds value in symptom management by allowing a broader understanding of the impact of symptom management beyond the targeted symptom, on functioning, and on overall QoL. In this paper, the results of the commonly used HRQoL questionnaires in phase III randomized clinical trials of chemotherapy in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer has been discussed. An overview about symptom burden, treatments and HRQoL domains, a description of available HRQoL instruments used for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer were reported. Finally, the characteristics of most commonly used HRQoL instruments were identified and compared. To provide better empirical justification for the selection of HRQoL instruments, head-to-head comparisons of them within the same studies are needed. Estimating a minimal important difference could be significant when interpreting trial results. The impact of HRQoL scores in clinical practice remains unclear; poor communication of clinical significance of the results and limited training of clinicians are the most important barriers to a widespread use of HRQoL questionnaires
Assessment and treatment of elderly patients with cancer
In the US, the total projected cancer incidence will increase by 45% yearly from 2010 to 2030. The majority of these neoplasms will affect the elderly. The National Institute on Aging has characterised the aging of our society as a "silver tsunami". Thus, the management of cancer in the older aged person represents a priority for health care delivery in the immediate future. Aging, age-related changes, frailty, prolongation of active life expectancy, prevention of Adverse Drugs Reactions (ADRs), Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA), and individualised treatment in the future will become the most widely used concepts in the management of cancer patients
10 pages, 3 figures, 6 tables[EN] Community structure and faunal composition of decapod crustaceans off the west coast of central Italy (western Mediterranean) were investigated. Samples were collected during five trawl surveys carried out from June 1996 to June 2000 from 16 to 750 m depth. Multivariate analysis revealed the occurrence of five faunistic assemblages: 1) a strictly coastal community over sandy bottoms at depths <35 m; 2) a middle shelf community over sandy-muddy bottoms at depths between 50 and 100 m; 3) a slope edge community up to 200 m depth as a transition assemblage; 4) an upper slope community at depths between 200 and 450 m, and 5) a middle slope community at depths greater than 450 m. The existence of a shelfslope edge transition is a characteristic of the western and central Mediterranean where a Leptometra phalangium facies is found in many areas at depths between 120 and 180 m. The brachyuran crab Liocarcinus depurator dominates the shallow muddy-sandy bottoms of the shelf, while Parapenaeus longirostris is the most abundant species from the shelf to the upper slope assemblage. The dominant species on the middle slope are mainly nektobenthic (Aristeus antennatus, Aristaeomorpha foliacea, Plesionika martia), bentho-pelagic (Pasiphaea sivado) and benthic species (Nephrops norvegicus). The average diversity of the five assemblages defined increased with depth and the highest diversity values were found in the slope assemblages.
The impact of contextual factors on nursing outcomes and the role of placebo/nocebo effects
Introduction: Placebo and nocebo effects represent one of the most fascinating topics in the health care field.
Objectives: the aims of this discussion paper were (1) to briefly introduce the placebo and nocebo effects, (2) to elucidate the contextual factors able to trigger placebo and nocebo effects in the nursing field, and (3) to debate the impact of contextual factors on nursing education, practice, organisation, and research.
Methods: a narrative review was conducted based on the available evidence.
Results: Placebo responses (from Latin “I shall please”) are a beneficial outcome(s) triggered by a positive context. The opposite are the nocebo effects (from Latin “I shall harm”), which indicates an undesirable outcome(s) caused by a negative context. Both are complex and distinct psychoneurobiological phenomena in which behavioural and neurophysiological changes arise subsequent to an interaction between the patient and the health care context.
Conclusion: Placebo and nocebo concepts have been recently introduced in the nursing discipline, generating a wide debate on ethical issues; however, the impact on nursing education, clinical practice, nursing administration, and research regarding contextual factors triggering nocebo and placebo effects has not been debated to date
Rhythms of feeding activity and food consumption of two mediterranean burrowing fish: Gnathophis mystax (Delaroche) and Chlopsis bicolor Rafinesque.
Data on the food consumption, feeding activity and periodicity of two burrowing fish, the congrid eel Gnathophis mystax (Delaroche, 1809) and the false moray Chlopsis bicolor Rafinesque, 1810 are presented. In all, 455 specimens were collected by bottom trawl in the central Mediterranean Sea at depths ranging from 140 to 160 m during four 24-h day-night sampling cycles. The diet of G. mystax and C. bicolor was investigated by means of stomach content analysis. Diet varied significantly with length and maturity stage. During ontogenetic development G. mystax occupied different trophic levels: diet shifted from amphipods, predominantly in the smaller congrid eels [ 30 cm TL). Before the transition to the icthyophagous phase, the congrid eel showed a more generalistic foraging behaviour where decapods (Solenocera membranacea, Parapenaeus longirostris, Alpheus glaber), cephalopods (Sepiola spp. and Alloteuthis media), benthic (Gobiidae, Callionymus maculatus, Arnoglossus laterna) and benthopelagic fish (Argentina sphyraena) dominated the diet. Smaller C. bicolor (< 25 cm TL) fed primarily on amphipods and cephalopods; bigger specimens fed also on decapods both natantian (A. glaber, Processa canaliculata) and reptantian (Medorippe lanata, Goneplax rhomboides). Daily ration values, computed from the Eggers method, ranged from 2.48% to 2.99% wet body weight for C. bicolor and G. mystax, respectively. Diel patterns in stomach fullness and the trophic niche overlap between the two species were also discussed
