Continuous kinetic lumping of catalytic cracking processes
Processes, in which a multicomponent mixture of chemically similar compounds undergoes cracking reactions governed by nonlinear kinetics, are analyzed. Cracking reactions in general imply cleavage of chemical bonds between monomeric units. The article focuses on the case of the "uniform" kinetics. To obtain an analytical solution of the kinetic equations describing this process, we present an approach based on a continuous description of the mixture. The resulting nonlinear integro-differential equation has been linearized by a warped time scale, and a formal solution has been obtained via a regular perturbation method. The perturbation parameter is twice the inverse of the initial average number of monomeric units in excess of the minimum number that can be cracked by the reactions considere
Post-apopletic trigeminal trophic syndrome
Trigeminal trophic syndrome is an uncommon clinical entity in which cutaneous trophic ulceration develops with continuous manipulation of trigeminal dermatomes. Patients spontaneously refer picking, rubbing and/or scratching at the affected areas because of hypo-anaesthesia, paraesthesia and/or pain following damage of the sensory trigeminal fibres or nuclei. We herein describe a patient who developed the syndrome as a sequela of brain stem infarction. Diagnosis by scrape cytology in ruling-out basal cell carcinoma and other ulcerative skin diseases is discussed and the importance of neurological examination in disclosing hemi-anaesthesia of trigeminal dermatome(s) is emphasized
Levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel is an option in Parkinson’s disease with hyponatremia induced by dopamine agonists
Dopamine mediated responses in 6-OH-DA lesioned rats involve changes of the signal transduction.
"The Athens of the Pacfic". Alejandro Cicarelli and the civilized project of the Fine Arts in republican Chile
The author analyses the ideological and esthetic content of the opening speech to the Acaderny of Santiago, given by the Italian painter Alejandro Cicarelli on 17 March 1849. The speech reveals the profound influence that the German Johan Joachim Winkelmann had on the painter’s artistic ideas, whose writings influenced both the organisation and guidelines of the Academy. Thus, the speech highlights the importance of ideal beauty on l9th Century esthetics, the importance given to environmental conditioning in the development of culture, the enormous influence of the classic Greco-Roman referent, and the importance of other guiding principles of academic artistic life such as rationality, science, freedom, the importance of drawing and Christian values.

Dopamine mediated responses in 6-hydroxydopamine lesioned rats involve changes of the signal transduction
A single dose of the D1 agonist SKF 38393 (3 mg/kg) produces contralateral turning in unilaterally 6-hydroxydopamine lesioned rats only after a previous exposure of the animals to a dopamine agonist. This priming phenomenon is here investigated by studying the phosphorylation of DARPP-32, a dopamine- and cyclic AMP-regulated phosphoprotein functionally linked to D1 receptors in striatum. Dephospho-form of DARPP-32 in striatal tissue was measured by a back-phosphorylation assay. While the levels of DARPP-32 protein, as measured by quantitative immunoblotting, remained unchanged, a significant decrease of dephospho-DARPP-32 was observed in the denervated striatum of primed rats, indicating an increased phosphorylation in vivo of DARPP-32 in response to the D1 agonist. This study shows that an alteration of the dopamine-dependent signal transduction is related to the behavioral response to dopamine agents, suggesting a possible mechanism involved in the effects of these drugs in parkinsonian patients
