A governance and assessment model for a supply chain network
Purpose: the aim of this paper is to present (i) a model for the governance of a generic supply
chain network (SCN) and (ii) a structured evaluating framework to measure the integration
level between the partners
Design/methodology/approach: an analysis of three aspects to define the structure and the
contents for the proposed governance and evaluation model has been made. The three aspects
are (i) a literature review to determine the main concepts concerning a governance model for
SCN, (ii) the practical implications concerning the main known and existing models and (iii) a
description of a norm (i.e. Italian government) which encourage the integration among firms
in a supply chain network.
Findings: the main findings of this work are (i) a governance model for a supply chain
network composed by five key concepts and (ii) an evaluation model which permits to rank
(with a suitable score) the level of strategic and operative integration among the partners of
the supply chain.
Practical implications: the proposed governance and assessment model could be used for: (i)
a guidance to implement a supply management system among the actors of the chain, (ii)
developing a standard to manage supply chain and (iii) assessing the effectiveness of the
integration level among the partners from a self-evaluation point of view and for a third-part
assessment
Originality/Value: the proposed governance and evaluation models represent an original
method to implement and assess a management system to manage supply chain network. The
value of the proposed methodology is the easiness of the approach that can be applied to a
generic SCN constituted of firms of different typologies with a particular reference to the
small and medium enterprises
Computer simulation for the management of parking areas in a ferry terminal
In this article the problem of managing car/passengers parking area in port terminals is analyzed. Ferry
terminals have often restricted parking areas for loading vehicles. This is the reason why the departures
of the ferries are scheduled opportunely allocating loading areas dynamically. When one or more
departure delays occur, the assessment of the required parking areas becomes problematic. To support
the manager in this hard and critical task, a computer simulation-based software is proposed to improve
parking areas use and responsiveness during arrival, parking and loading activities. The simulation
model considers the main characteristics of the parking area (dimensions, layout, number of piers), ferry
traffic and capacity, time of departure, etc.. The same software is also used to analyze and evaluate a
potential alternative re-designed layout.. In particular, three re-designed parking area layouts are
evaluated with the implemented simulating software. For this aim, three suitable performance indexes
for evaluating layout efficiency are established. The proposed simulating model and results are
described presenting an actually applied case for a medium port in the Mediterranean sea

Evaluation of different types of emboli in transcatheter embolization of rat kidney.
The properties and characteristics of a variety of embolic materials (Clots--surgicel--gelfoam--barium--cyanoacrylates) were investigated by transcatheter embolization of the rat kidney. Clots and surgicel result in temporary embolization, with return of normal renal function. Gelfoam barium and cyanoacrylates produce definitive embolization. Only barium was found in veins
Sub-costal xypho-umbilico flap. A new approach to the neoplastic kidney.
The authors suggest a new approach to the kidney tumors: the xypho-umbilical-subcostal flap incision. This incision offers the advantages of the transversal as well as of the longitudinal approaches and gives a very satisfactory exposition of the surgical field. The authors report 52 cases of renal tumors operated on with this approach in the last 5 years: because of the optimal view it allows and of the lack of complications they suggest this incision as a method of choice in the majority of the cases of renal tumor
