“Italian Economists of the 20th Century”, edited by Ferdinando Meacci, Cheltenham: Edward Elgar, 1998
This book contains twelve essays on some important Italian economists whose works were mostly published in the 20th century. The essays are written mostlty by non-Italian authors and deal with Vilfredo Pareto (by A. Kirman), Maffeo Pantaleoni (Peter Groenewegen), Enrico Barone (P. C. Dooley), Antonio De Viti de Marco (O. Kayaalp), Marco Fanno (R. Arena), Costantino Bresciani-Turroni (H. D. Kurz), Luigi Einaudi (F. Meacci), Piero Sraffa (B. Schefold), Franco Modigliani (C. Dangel), Paolo Sylos Labini (J. Halevi), Pierangelo Garegnani (G. Mongiovi), and L. Luigi Pasinetti (J. R. Teixeira). A short introduction by Ferdinando Meacci opens the volume and advances a suggestive hypothesis for a comprehensive interpretation of the evolution of Italian economic thought during the last century. This introduction is an attempt to treat the thoughts of the twelve economists as a sample from which to infer a brief outline of Italian economics in the 20th century and of its links with economics in general. This outline is sketched in two glimpses. One looks at the economists one after the other according to the period in which they lived (and is accordingly called ‘vertical’). The other looks at them one next to the other according to the methods they have in common (and is accordingly called ‘horizontal’).Italian economists, history of economics, vertical and horizontal
Pharmacokinetic of intraarterial mitomycin C with extra corporeal detoxification in humans
Purpose: A study has been performed in 15 patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer to evaluate the pharmacokinetic of mitomycin C and the effectiveness of drug removal techniques during high-dose locoregional chemotherapy. Patients and Methods: Haemofiltration and/or haemodialysis of post-hepatic venous blood were performed during 22 intraarterial infusions of mitomycin C by the use of a double lumen catheter surgically introduced in the inferior vena cava. Mitomycin C levels were measured by high performance liquid chromatography in the extracorporeal circuit blood, in the peripheral venous blood and ultrafiltrate. Results: The mean reduction of mitomycin C bioavailability in the extracorporeal circuit blood was 42.3 per cent using haemofiltration, 58.9 per cent using haemofiltration plus haemodialysis and 59.3 per cent with haemodialysis alone. The resulting mean mitomycin C plasmatic half-life was 40.2 minutes using haemofiltration, 24.9 minutes using haemofiltration plus haemodialysis and 24.1 minutes using haemodialysis alone. Conclusions: The detoxification of posthepatic venous blood during intra-arterial hepatic chemotherapy is an effective method to increase mitomycin C concentrations and oncological response and limit extra hepatic toxicity

Pareto's Chronicles: Liberty and the Left
The ‘second series’ of the Giornale degli Economisti commenced in 1890. It revealed a notable change in editorial direction from the earlier series, which was a direct result of Alberto Zorli being joined by leading liberal intellectuals, Ugo Mazzola, Antonio de Viti de Marco and Maffeo Pantaleoni, as the Journal’s proprietary directors. In regard to economic science, the second series saw the Journal establish itself as the leading Italian distributor of the new marginalism. In regard to politics, it became a leading advocate for liberal policy. To that end, the Journal published a special feature from 1891 entitled ‘cronaca’, which critically chronicled practical developments in Italian public policy, public finances and the state of the economy. In 1893 Pareto took over from Ugo Mazzola as author of the chronicles, a role he continued to perform until 1897. His contributions were, overwhelmingly, critical of interventionist and militaristic actions of the Italian Government. The purpose of this paper is to place Pareto’s chronicles in their historical context and search for comments that hint at the subsequent development of sociological theory. This will be achieved by: interpreting Pareto’s ‘cronaca’ with reference to political developments in Italy from the 1880s to 1897; identifying practical illustrations in the ‘cronaca’ concerning liberty and the extreme left in Italian society; and identifying three broad consistencies between Pareto’s ‘non-scientific’ ‘Cronaca’ and his scientific ‘General Sociology’.Cronaca, Chronicle, Vilfredo Pareto, General Sociology
