No full textThis essays describes two sites of memory of post-Soviet Ukraine: the memorials of World War Two and of the Holodomor on the Pechersk Hills in Kyiv. The analysis is introduced into the context of Soviet and later post-Soviet monument building and stresses the continuity and discontinuities in the public efforts of the Ukrainian governments to draw the attention of both national and international public opinion to a particular version of history, supporting the specific political power in Ukraine. The author stresses the importance of certain modules of communication in these monumental memorials that are taken from other memorials all around the world. Eventually the author underlines the importance of memory policies for younger nation-states

No full textSu invito di Paolo Rusconi, Sergio Ubbiali e Anna Nabot, avevo preparato insieme a Fabio Mauri, in alcuni incontri della primavera e dell’estate del 2007, tra Milano e Roma, la presentazione del suo lavoro per il convegno Bellezza e Giustizia della Pro Civitate Christiana. Purtroppo Mauri, che avrebbe voluto ripercorrere personalmente, sul filo della memoria, alcune fasi salienti del proprio cammino, non aveva potuto essere presente, il 13 ottobre ad Assisi, lasciando a me, inaspettatamente, l’onere di svolgere, in una forma necessariamente più anodina e didattica la presentazione per immagini della sua opera.
Fortunatamente è stato possibile utilizzare con una certa ampiezza i suoi lucidi e trasparenti scritti di poetica, ai quali hanno dato voce, alla Cittadella, gli amici Silvia Bignami, Roberto Carusi Davide Colombo e Paolo Rusconi

No full textIn apertura di una conferenza intitolata La pratica della bellezza, James Hillman lamenta il fatto che generalmente parlare di “bello” e di “bellezza” in filosofia ha significato per troppo tempo, e in maniera piuttosto retorica, riferirsi a una dimensione ideale, elevata, così elevata da rendere la discussione su questi temi “noiosa, ottundente, narcotizzante”. Molto più interessante potrebbe essere parlare di bellezza come “pratica”, soprattutto in un momento storico (eravamo all’inizio degli anni Novanta del secolo scorso) in cui – sostiene Hillman – il represso non è ciò che abitualmente si immagina (la violenza, la misoginia, la sessualità, l’infanzia, le emozioni, i sentimenti,
lo spirito), ma la bellezza. Ma le cose stanno davvero così? La discussione sulla bellezza, quando si tende a definirla o a comprenderla direzionando lo sguardo verso l’alto, risulta noiosa e narcotizzante

No full textMammalian spermatozoa require a maturational event after ejaculation that allows them to acquire the capacity for fertilisation. This process occurs spontaneously during the transit through the female reproductive tract where spermatozoa are in contact with micromolar concentrations of adenosine that might act as a capacitative effector. This study shows that the adenosine A1 receptor agonist, 2-chloro-N6-cyclopentyladenosine, can induce capacitation, i.e., the ability to undergo the acrosome reaction and to become fertile. This receptor, already known to be bound to Galpha(i2), is also bound to G(q/11). These G proteins are functional in the signalling pathway elicited by the A1 receptor and correlate with the multiple intracellular events that follow its activation. The use of protein kinase C isoform inhibitors and MEK inhibitors, resulting in the abolition of the biological response to the selective agonist, indicates the involvement of protein kinase C and MEK in its signalling. In agonist-treated spermatozoa an extracellular calcium influx, involvement of alpha and gamma PKC isoforms and transient phosphorylation of ERK1/2 have been observed. Our results, besides showing that adenosine A1 receptor prompts mammalian spermatozoa to undergo the acrosome reaction hence supporting a role for adenosine as agent for fertilisation, show that 2-chloro-N6-cyclopentyladenosine triggers signalling mechanisms that involve both Galpha(i2) and G(q/11), extracellular calcium influx, modulation of classical Ca2+-dependent PCK isoforms and up-regulation of the ERK1/2 phosphorylation

No full textGeorge Santayana è autore di una vastissima produzione in lingua inglese poco conosciuta nel nostro Paese. Eppure, accanto a quella di John Dewey, la sua riflessione rappresenta una delle elaborazioni più significative della filosofia americana. La sua opera fondamentale, Il senso della bellezza, è divenuta un classico dell’estetica contemporanea. L’obiettivo di fondo del pensiero di Santayana è integrare la bellezza e l’arte, così come ogni altra attività umana, con la vita, restituendo a esse la forte vitalità da cui sorgono. La concezione estetica di Santayana, proprio in quanto privilegia la centralità della bellezza come esperienza vitale e si volge a indagare il modo in cui noi la percepiamo e il significato che a essa attribuiamo, costituisce una proposta di grande originalità e in stimolante sintonia con la ricerca odierna. Così Il senso della bellezza mantiene immutato il fascino di un classico, ed è difficile rimanere insensibili alla singolare lucidità della teoria del bello di Santayana e all’accattivante raffinatezza delle sue argomentazioni

An Attempt to Teach Multiculturalism: Introducing the Holocaust into History Classes in post-Soviet Ukraine
No full textThis articles describes the collaboration of Ukrainian and international association in the efforts to introduce the Holocaust as a topic of study in the Ukrainian schools. The author reveals that the teaching of the history of anti-Semitism and the Shoah has been interpreted not simply as a part of history but as a way to teach students the value of tolerance and foster a multi-cultural society. This article stresses the important civic role played by the teaching of WWII in post-Soviet Ukraine
