Ground-state energy of many-electron systems from x-ray-scattering cross sections
In the nonrelativistic limit and for a purely electrostatic Hamiltonian, an exact relation between the ground-state energy of a crystal and the x-ray-scattering cross section has been derived which allows us to distinguish static from dynamical (exchange and correlation) contributions. With the use of this relation and the corresponding one valid in the case of an isolated atom, it is possible to calculate the cohesive energy of a crystalline substance. Available x-ray cross-section data have been used to calculate the cohesive energy of Be, Si, Al, and Cu. In the case of Be, agreement of calculated cohesive energy with the thermochemical value is obtained if exchange and correlation contributions are included. For the other solids, a substantial disagreement increasing with atomic number has been evidenced. Poor agreement of calculated cohesive energies with thermochemical values is presumably to be attributed to a lack of sufficiently comprehensive sets of measured cross sections

Temperature dependence of spin reversal in ordered Ni3Mn: Evidence for anomalous behavior
A neutron-diffraction experiment on a partially ordered Ni78Mn22 sample shows a temperature dependence of the average magnetic moment of the Mn atoms in the Ni site reminiscent of a critical phenomenon. This effect has been attributed to the change with temperature of the number of Mn atoms antiferromagnetically aligned with the bulk magnetization. The possibility of a correlation between the observed phenomenon and the ferromagnetic ordering transition in fully disordered samples is also proposed
Relevance of Charge-Density Measurements for High-Precision Calculations
High-precision photon diffraction data in beryllium, diamond, silicon, copper and germanium are reanalysed with the aim of assessing the accuracy of experimental X-ray and gamma-ray structure factors by comparing derived values for cohesive energy with the thermochemical ones. Special attention is devoted to the diffraction data analysis for a meaningful and accurate comparison between theory and experiment. A good overall agreement of local density approximation calculations is found when the electron density exhibits spherical symmetry around each atomic site. On the contrary, the analysis of experimental data in 3d transition metals, namely vanadium, chromium, iron, cobalt and nickel, points out failures of the theory in reproducing the asphericity of the electron distribution
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
