Mechanism and Predictability of Persistent Blocking over Euro-Russian Region in Summer Season 2010
2010年6月中旬から8月中旬にかけて東ヨーロッパ・ロシア西部で発生したブロッキングの形成・持続メカニズムと予測可能性について,大気の低周波変動成分に注目して解析を行った。気象研究所大気大循環モデル(MRI/JMA-AGCM)によるハインドキャスト実験データの解析から,7月下旬にブロッキングがヨーロッパ域(30˚E付近)からロシア域(50˚E付近)に遷移する期間のブロッキングの予測精度が顕著に悪化することを定量的に示すことができた。さらに気象庁現業1ヶ月アンサンブル予報データを用いて7月下旬の大気循環場について解析した結果,ロシア域でのブロッキング強化は,ブロッキングのすぐ上流側に位置するイタリア上空のトラフの発達と有意に関連していることが明らかになった。このことは,7月下旬のロシア域におけるブロッキングの形成には,そのすぐ上流側に位置する近傍の循環場偏差が重要な役割を果たしていたことを示している。We investigate the mechanism and predictability of a strong persistent Euro-Russian blocking in summer (JJA) of 2010 using a reanalysis dataset and two kinds of forecast datasets. It is found that when the blocking resides over the Atlantic from mid-June to late-June, synoptic eddies contribute to maintain the blocking. On the other hand, low-frequency disturbances play an important role in the blocking maintenance from late-July to mid-August when the blocking is located over western Russia. The analysis on the forecast datasets indicates that the predictability of the blocking in late-July when the blocking shifts its location from western Europe to Russia is much reduced in comparison with the other periods. A case of Sertoli cell tumor of the testis
24歳男.無痛性左陰嚢内腫瘤を主訴とした.外陰部は男性型で女性化乳房は認めなかった.エコーにより精巣内腫瘍を認め, 全身CTや骨シンチでは異常を認めなかった.左高位精巣摘除術を施行し, 病理組織診によりセルトリ細胞腫であると診断した.病理学的に良性腫瘍であると考えられたが, 経過観察は必要であると考えられるA 24-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with the complaint of a painless mass in the left testis. Gynecomastia was not present. The serum levels of alpha fetoprotein and human chorionic gonadotropin-beta were not elevated. Ultrasound sonography showed a hypoechoic lesion in the left testis. There was no evidence of retroperitoneal lymph node enlargement or distant metastasis on computerized tomography. With a diagnosis of left testicular tumor, left high orchiectomy was done. The tumor measured 10 x 11 mm in size within the testis and was histologically diagnosed as benign Sertoli cell tumor. Immunohistochemcal analysis revealed negative findings with the tumor markers inhibin, CAM 5.2, pancytokeratin, EMA, and PLAP. No adjuvant therapy was performed. BEHAVIOR OF BIODEGRADATION PRODUCTS FROM POLYFLUOROALKYL PHOSPAHTE ESTERS IN COSMETICS UNDER AEROBIC CONDITION
本研究では,化粧品中のポリフルオロアルキルリン酸エステル類(PAPs)の好気条件下における生分解生成物の挙動の検討を主目的とした.PAPsは難分解性や生殖毒性が疑われているペルフルオロカルボン酸類(PFCAs)の前駆体として注目されている.下水処理場の生物処理工程を模擬した生分解試験より,化粧品中のPAPsからの類縁化合物類を含めた生分解生成物の挙動を定量的に評価した.化粧品中の10種のdiPAPsの濃度減少を一次反応式で近似した場合,その半減期は6~111時間であり,分子量が大きくなるにつれて,半減期が長くなる傾向が示された.8:2diPAPからのペルフルオロオクタン酸(PFOA)のモル生成率は4.0±0.4%であった.中間生成体と予想されるフッ素テロマーアルコール類(FTOHs), フッ素テロマーカルボン酸類(FTCAs)が生分解生成物として検出された.さらに,低分子量のFTOHs(5:2sFTOH, 6:2FTOH, 7:2sFTOH)は,曝気により気相へ移行する可能性が示唆された.Polyfluoroalkyl phosphate esters (PAPs) are a group of anthropogenic organic fluorinated compounds which have been widely used in many products. Some researchers pointed out that PAPs are precursors of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), which are endocrine disrupting compounds. Main objective of this study was to understand behavior of biodegradation products from PAPs in cosmetics under aerobic condition. For two different biodegradation tests, namely, 1) 8:2diPAPs and 2) a foundation which was labeled “C9-15 fluoroalcohol phosphate” were prepared. As a result, the concentrations of 10 diPAPs decreased during both experiments and they were approximated to first-order reactions. Their half-lives were 6~111 h, and when their molecular weights increased, thier half-lives became longer. Mass of the formed PFOA was 4.0±0.4% of input mass of 8:2diPAP. Not only PFCAs but also some kinds of FTCAs, FTOHs were detected, which seemed to be intermediate products of diPAPs. It was suspected that FTOHs with lower molecular weight (5:2sFTOH, 6:2FTOH, 7:2sFTOH) were diffused into the air by aeration

Neurotransmitter is released at synapses by fusion of synaptic vesicles with the plasma membrane. To sustain synaptic transmission, compensatory retrieval of membranes and vesicular proteins is essential. We combined capacitance measurements and pH-imaging via pH-sensitive vesicular protein marker (anti-synaptotagmin2-cypHer5E), and compared the retrieval kinetics of membranes and vesicular proteins at the calyx of Held synapse. Membrane and Syt2 were retrieved with a similar time course when slow endocytosis was elicited. When fast endocytosis was elicited, Syt2 was still retrieved together with the membrane, but endocytosed organelle re-acidification was slowed down, which provides strong evidence for two distinct endocytotic pathways. Strikingly, CaM inhibitors or the inhibition of the Ca2+-calmodulin-Munc13-1 signaling pathway only impaired the uptake of Syt2 while leaving membrane retrieval intact, indicating different recycling mechanisms for membranes and vesicle proteins. Our data identify a novel mechanism of stimulus-and Ca2+-dependent regulation of coordinated endocytosis of synaptic membranes and vesicle proteins
Localized amyloidosis of the ureter and bladder treated effectively by occlusive dressing technique therapy using dimethyl sulfoxide: a case report
症例は48歳女で, 患者にはDMSOによる密封包帯療法(連日就寝前に50%DMSO溶液約7mlをガーゼに浸して大腿に貼付し, その上からラップで約60分間覆う方法)を指導し, これを継続させた.本法の施行中, 皮膚の軽い発赤や掻痒感の訴えがあったものの治療を中止するほどではなく, 良好な経過が得られたWe report here the first case of localized amyloidosis of the ureter and bladder to be treated effectively by occlusive dressing technique therapy using dimethyl sulfoxide. The patient was a 48-year-old woman whose chief complaint was macrohematuria and right back pain. Ultrasound sonography demonstrated right hydronephrosis and an intravesical mass in the region of the right ureteral orifice. Retrograde pyelography revealed severe stricture of the right lower ureter. Cystoscopy demonstrated a yellow submucosal tumor around the right ureteral orifice. We suspected urinary tract amyloidosis, and transurethral biopsy and resection of the intravesical mass were performed under right ureteral stenting. Histopathological diagnosis was amyloidosis. There was no evidence of systemic amyloidosis. To treat residual amyloidosis of the ureter and bladder, we performed occlusive dressing technique therapy using dimethyl sulfoxide every day. After 6 months of therapy, the right hydronephrosis disappeared, and there was no evidence of a recurrence of amyloidosis. We concluded that this therapy was very effective and safe for urinary tract amyloidosis
N=2 supersymmetric dynamics for pedestrians
Understanding the dynamics of gauge theories is crucial, given the fact that all known interactions are based on the principle of local gauge symmetry. Beyond the perturbative regime, however, this is a notoriously difficult problem. Requiring invariance under supersymmetry turns out to be a suitable tool for analyzing supersymmetric gauge theories over a larger region of the space of parameters. Supersymmetric quantum field theories in four dimensions with extended N=2 supersymmetry are further constrained and have therefore been a fertile field of research in theoretical physics for quite some time. Moreover, there are far-reaching mathematical ramifications that have led to a successful dialogue with differential and algebraic geometry. These lecture notes aim to introduce students of modern theoretical physics to the fascinating developments in the understanding of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in a coherent fashion. Starting with a gentle introduction to electric-magnetic duality, the author guides readers through the key milestones in the field, which include the work of Seiberg and Witten, Nekrasov, Gaiotto and many others. As an advanced graduate level text, it assumes that readers have a working knowledge of supersymmetry including the formalism of superfields, as well as of quantum field theory techniques such as regularization, renormalization and anomalies. After his graduation from the University of Tokyo, Yuji Tachikawa worked at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton and the Kavli Institute for Physics and Mathematics of the Universe. Presently at the Department of Physics, University of Tokyo, Tachikawa is the author of several important papers in supersymmetric quantum field theories and string theory

Robust monocular depth perception.
This thesis presents a new approach to the problem of constructing a depth map from a sequence of monocular images. The approach only requires accurate knowledge of the robot's motion along the focal axis of the moving camera. When the configuration of the camera is known with respect to the mobile platform, this information can be readily obtained by projecting displacement data from a wheel encoder or range sensors onto the focal axis. Instead of directly calculating the depth to the feature points, we first hypothesize that there is a pair of feature points which have the same depth. Based on this hypothesis, the depths are calculated for all pairs of feature points found in the image using the robot's displacement along the focal axis. As the robot moves, the relative location of two points changes in a specific and predictable manner on the image plane if they are actually at the same depth, in other words, if the hypothesis is correct. The motion of each pair of points on the image plane is observed, and if it is consistent with the predicted behavior, the hypothesis is accepted. Accepted pairs create a graph structure which contains depth relations among the feature points. Depth maps obtained at different time steps are integrated in time using a Kalman filtering-based algorithm to obtain a denser depth map. The algorithm is robust against rotational and translational motion noises, and its performance was experimentally demonstrated using a camera mounted on a mobile platform. The numerical stability and the sensitivity of the algorithm to various noise sources are also discussed. Effects of phytic acid sorption on iron polymerization and at the ferrihydrite-water interface
Phytic acid is the most predominant organic phosphorus species in soils. Its stability in soils is mainly due to its high affinity for soil colloids, especially Fe (oxyhydr)oxides. They have been acknowledged as mobile/reactive adsorbents for P in soil-water environments. Although several sorption mechanisms were proposed, it is not clear how multi phosphate groups of phytic acid contribute to the surface complexation and/or precipitation processes. In this study, sorption behavior of phytic acid in ferrihydrite was examined using experimental geochemistry, solution 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated inner-sphere surface complexation via P1,3 and P2 functional groups under both pH 5 and 8.5. Under alkaline pH, an additional P5 functional group became active. Coprecipitation experiments showed evidence of the formation of Fe(III)-phytate-like bulk precipitates when the initial phytic acid/Fe(III) molar ratio was high (0.45-0.5). At the low phytic acid/Fe(III) (<0.1), the formation of ferrihydrite was unaffected, but further transformation was still inhibited.
