On the straight and narrow: Directed movement by Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) during on-ice travel
Locations of six Weddell seals that had been displaced approximately 10 km from their capture locations in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Each seal was instrumented with a satellite tag and released into one of three isolated breathing holes. After at least 2 days in the water, the seal hauled out and traveled freely across the sea ice for 2.1-7.5 km before being recaptured

Data for diet–egg relationships and equilibration of fatty acids in eggs of southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma
Analyses were conducted with southern flounder Paralichthys lethostigma to identify which fatty acids (FAs) in eggs are influenced by broodstock diet and how long it takes for the FA composition of eggs to equilibrate to the broodstock diet. Data were obtained from a laboratory experiment and from hatchery production operations. For each source, two populations of adult flounder were given one or the other of two diet treatments. In the laboratory experiment, the diets differed markedly in FA composition. In the hatchery, a base diet was supplemented on two different schedules. Each of the four diet treatments produced eggs with significantly different mean FA compositions. Of the 27 FAs measured, 19 differed significantly between diets and had corresponding significant differences in eggs (direct diet–egg relationships). Combining results with data from a prior study showed that equilibration of eggs to a change in adult diet takes 8-16 weeks for southern flounder. These findings will be useful for improving broodstock diets and feeding protocols for captive flounder being used by stock-enhancement programs that are designed to mitigate the long-term and widespread population declines of this species
Texas and Florida Red Drum Egg Boon Data 2009-2023
Availability of essential fatty acids (EFAs) in marine ecosystems can have important consequences for organisms, populations, and communities. EFAs are highly concentrated in eggs of marine animals, and coordinated spawning creates superabundances of these nutritional resources in spatially and temporally discrete patches, known as egg boons. The objective of this study was to document the magnitude of temporal and geographic variability in the three dominant EFAs in egg boons (docosahexaenoic acid, DHA; eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA; and arachidonic acid, ARA) and to assess the changes in trophic linkages that are responsible for that variability using 14 diet-related fatty acids and 5 trophic biomarkers in egg boons of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus). Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Effects of Parental Diet on Nutritional Composition of Yolk and Metabolic Programming in Southern Flounder
Fatty acids play a critical role in cellular functions and are vital to the growth and development
of fish during early stages of life. The nutrients available to fish embryos and early larvae are
dependent on recent maternal diet in certain fish species, including Southern Flounder
(Paralichthys lethostigma). Variations in maternal diet can result in subsequent changes to
metabolic functioning of offspring, such as capacity for nutrient absorption, which is indicative
of metabolic programming. The aim of this study was to (1) investigate the effects of the
maternal diet on the fatty acid profiles of eggs, and (2) determine whether Southern Flounder
exhibit metabolic programming in the form of measured differences in larval fatty acid
composition between spawns from two maternal diet treatment groups (shrimp or sardine).
Results demonstrated direct diet-egg relationships for 11 fatty acids, with the majority of these
fatty acids being higher in the shrimp diet and corresponding eggs. Analyses of larval fatty acid
composition, however, did not reveal significant differences in any of the 27 fatty acids
measured for any of the three larval stages sampled. Therefore, there was no evidence of
metabolic programming in Southern Flounder based on comparisons of larval fatty acid
composition among parental diet treatments. This contrasts with prior studies that provided

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
