[[alternative]]The Folklore Subjects in Liao, Shiou-Ping's "Gate" Series
[[abstract]]Being the introducer of modern-day printmaking techniques to Taiwan, Shiou-Ping Liao (1936-) has been praised as "Father of Prints in Taiwan". However, besides his highly commended contribution to the popularization of printmaking in Taiwan, Liao's special painting style is also worth further investigation and research. This thesis will focus on the "Gate" series (1966-72) on which Liao first established his unique personal artistic style. The author also tried to decipher the meanings of those folk icons used in this series and the implied meanings of using those folk subjects.
To understand how Liao created the "Gate" series and what folk subjects mean to the "Gate" series and the time, we should first understand the time when Liao started his painting career. Chapter 1 will first introduce the situation of the post-war Taiwanese artistic circles during the 1950's and 60's, and also the first half of the 60's of Japanese art circles. How the "Gate" series was created by Liao when he stayed in Paris (1965-68) is explained in Chapter 2. As for the folk art subjects, which are the most important part of the series and the sources of its geometric styles, were investigated in Chapter 3 and 4. The folk subjects in the series include: door god, paper money, Chinese decorative patterns, new year couplets and the colors used in traditional architectural paintings in Taiwan. Chapter 3 will first discuss where did these folk subjects come from, what did they mean, what are their traditional shapes, and when were they used. Then we analyze which characteristics were used in the series and what were derived or respond to their traditional meanings. Chapter 4 points out the close relation between traditional folk art styles and the abstract geometric style of the "Gate" series. Besides, it makes further explanation about the distinct difference between the "Gate" series' geometric abstraction and the 1960's Post Painterly Abstraction in America.
The conclusive Chapter 5 investigates the background of the "Gate" series to understand the inheritance of the Taiwan folk subjects in this series from the "Local Color" idea in the Japan ruling times. Furthermore, the trend of modernization of Taiwan fine arts in 60's also influences the using of folk subjects in "Gate" series. The performance and importance of the "Gate" series is thus concluded.
Between environmental literature and ocean literature, Syaman Rapongan and Liao Hongji
The subject of the bachelor thesis is a literary analysis of selected works with oceanic subject matter by contemporary Taiwanese authors Syaman Rapongan (*1957) and Liao Hongji (*1957). Rapongan's novel The Eyes of the Sky (2012) and Liao Hongji's short story cycle Fishermen (1996) will be presented in the broader context of "bentu literature" (bentu wenxue; i.e., local Taiwanese literature) and closely related environmental and ocean literature. In the analytical part, the author will focus on the motivic construction in the work of Rapongan and Liao in relation to ocean and environmental themes. The main focus will be on the differences in the conception of the ocean and marine culture in Rapongan's work as a member of the indigenous tribe Tao, and Liao Hongji, whose origin is Han. The thesis further examines whether and how environmental and oceanic literature overlap, using Wu Mingyi's definition of environmental literature. Keywords Syaman Rapongan, Liao Hongji, ocean literature, environmental literature, bentu wenxu

Long-range ordering of turbulent stresses in 2D turbulence
We use filter-space techniques to study the geometric alignment of turbulent stresses and strain rates in an experimental quasi-two-dimensional weakly turbulent flow. When these stresses and strains are misaligned, the usual turbulent energy cascade can be suppressed; and more generally, the relative alignment of these two tensors determines the direction of the cascade. We show that as a function of length scale, the turbulent stress undergoes a transition to system-spanning order. However, by exploring analogously defined quantities in a field built from random Fourier modes, we see qualitatively similar behavior, suggesting that at least some of this ordering is purely kinematic. By comparing our results from the experiment and the random field, we highlight the role played by the orientation of the rate of strain tensor in the energy transfer process; additionally, our results allow us to pose several intriguing conjectures

The state of the art of the documentation of Philippine languages
The Philippines is a land with great linguistic diversity. According to the latest edition of Ethnologue (Gordon 2005), there are 175 languages spoken in the Philippines. Of these, 168 are Austronesian. In the past few decades, a number of articles summarizing the state of the art of Philippine linguistics have appeared, including Constantino 1971; McKaughan 1971; Reid 1981; Quakenbush 2003, 2005; Author 2006. However, none of these papers focus on the documentation of the languages of the Philippines. This paper fills in the gap by focusing the discussion on the state of the art of the documentation of Philippine languages. The term “Philippine languages” refers to indigenous languages of the Philippines. Thus, those languages that are not found in the geographical confines of the Philippines that have been proposed to be part of a subgroup of Philippine languages, such as Yami and the Sangiric, Minahasan, and Gorontalic languages of northern Sulawesi (Blust 1991), are excluded from the present study. Moreover, languages that are spoken inside the Philippines but are not considered to be indigenous to it, such as English, Spanish, and Chinese languages, are also excluded. This paper surveys works on Philippine languages with an attempt to address the following two questions. First, what types of work (e.g. dictionaries, grammars, texts, etc.) have been done on the documentation of Philippine languages? Second, are these works mainly done by Filipinos or non-Filipinos? Statements made in this paper are based on information gathered from the following sources: (i) Bibliography of the Summer Institute of Linguistics Philippines 1953-2003 (Johnson et al. 2003)—for SIL academic publications, (ii) annual reports of Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino; (iii) lists of publications directly solicited from scholars, (iv) abstracts of theses and dissertations, Department of Linguistics, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines at Diliman, and (v) web search. It is hoped that this study not only offers an overview of the documentation of Philippine languages, but also can inspire more linguists and/or local communities to get involve in the documentation of Philippine languages. Moreover, it is hoped that this study can also inspire and/or encourage more Filipinos to work on documenting Philippine languages. [Word count: 359 words] References Author. 2006. A Comparative Study of Physicochemical, Dielectric and Thermal Properties of Pressboard Insulation Impregnated with Natural Ester and Mineral Oil
Natural ester is considered to be a substitute of mineral oil in the future. To apply natural ester in large transformers safely, natural ester impregnated solid insulation should be proved to have comparable dielectric strength and thermal stability to mineral oil impregnated solid insulation. This paper mainly focuses on a comparative study of physicochemical, ac breakdown strength and thermal stability behavior of BIOTEMP natural ester/pressboard insulation and Karamay 25# naphthenic mineral oil/pressboard insulation after long term thermal ageing. The physicochemical and dielectric parameters including moisture, acids and the ac breakdown strength of these two oil/pressboard insulation systems at different ageing status were compared. The permittivity and ac breakdown strength of these two oil/pressboard insulation systems at different temperatures were also investigated. And a comparative result of the thermal stability behavior of these two oil/pressboard insulation systems with different ageing status was provided at last. Results show that though natural ester has higher absolute humidity and acidity during the long ageing period, the lower relative humidity of natural ester helps to keep its ac breakdown strength higher than mineral oil. The pressboard aged in natural ester also has higher ac breakdown strength than that aged in mineral oil. The lower relative permittivity ratio of natural ester impregnated paper to natural ester is beneficial to its dielectric strength. Using natural ester in transformer, the resistance to thermal decomposition of the oil/pressboard insulation system could be also effectively improved
