[[abstract]]Public health pesticides in two-component mixed solutions were analyzed using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The two-component mixed solutions used were allethrin mixed with cyfluthrin, cypermethrin mixed with tetramethrin, and transfluthrin mixed with cyfluthrin. Quantitative SPME-GC and SPME-GC-MS analyses using calibration and standard addition methods were evaluated. Using SPME pretreatment saved several tens to hundreds of mL of organic solvent. Quantitative analyses of the SPME-GC and SPME-GC-MS using the calibration and standard addition methods showed promise for simple, fast, and solventless public health pesticide analysis.[[note]]SC

Chih-Wen Yang,1,2 Jong-Ling Fuh2,3 1Department of Neurology, National Yang-Ming University Hospital, Ilan, 2National Yang-Ming University School of Medicine, 3Department of Neurology, Neurological Institute, Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China Abstract: Exposure to anesthesia and surgery has been hypothesized to increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). While the exact pathogenesis of AD remains unknown, it potentially involves specific proteins (eg, amyloid beta and tau) and neuroinflammation. A growing body of preclinical evidence also suggests that anesthetic agents interact with the components that mediate AD neuropathology at multiple levels. However, it remains unclear whether anesthesia and surgery are associated with an increased risk of AD in humans. To date, there have not been randomized controlled trials to provide evidence for such a causal relationship. Besides, observational studies showed inconsistent results. A meta-analysis of 15 case–control studies revealed no statistically significant association between general anesthesia and the development of AD (pooled odds ratio [OR] =1.05; P=0.43). However, a few retrospective cohort studies have demonstrated that exposure to anesthesia and surgery is associated with an increased risk of AD. Thus, well-designed studies with longer follow-up periods are still needed to define the role of anesthesia in relation to the development of AD. Patients were included in this study if they were 50 years of age or older and their records included a primary or secondary diagnosis of AD. New patients who met inclusion criteria were followed up longitudinally from 2005 to 2010. Costs were calculated for the first year following the diagnosis of AD.Results: Overall, a higher percentage of women than men were diagnosed with AD (54% vs 46%, respectively). The first AD diagnosis occurred most frequently in the age of 75–84 years. The person-year incidence rate increased from 5.63/1,000 persons (95% CI, 5.32–5.94) in 2005 to 8.17/1,000 persons (95% CI, 7.78–8.57) in 2010. The cumulative incidence rate was 33.54/1,000 persons (95% CI, 32.76–34.33) in 2005–2010. The total mean inflated annual costs per patient in new Taiwan dollars (NT)inthefirstyearofdiagnosisrangedfromNT) in the first year of diagnosis ranged from NT205,413 (2009) to NT$227,110 (2005), with hospitalization representing the largest component. Conclusion: AD represents a substantial burden in Taiwan, and based on the observed increase in incidence rate over time, it is likely that this burden will continue to increase. The findings reported here are consistent with previous research. The NHIRD contains extensive real-world information that can be used to conduct research, allowing us to expand our understanding of the incidence, prevalence, and burden of disease in Taiwan. Absence of xenotropic murine leukaemia virus-related virus in UK patients with chronic fatigue syndrome

Background: Detection of a retrovirus, xenotropic murine leukaemia virus-related virus (XMRV), has recently been reported in 67% of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. We have studied a total of 170 samples from chronic fatigue syndrome patients from two UK cohorts and 395 controls for evidence of XMRV infection by looking either for the presence of viral nucleic acids using quantitative PCR (limit of detection <16 viral copies) or for the presence of serological responses using a virus neutralisation assay. Results: We have not identified XMRV DNA in any samples by PCR (0/299). Some serum samples showed XMRV neutralising activity (26/565) but only one of these positive sera came from a CFS patient. Most of the positive sera were also able to neutralise MLV particles pseudotyped with envelope proteins from other viruses, including vesicular stomatitis virus, indicating significant cross-reactivity in serological responses. Four positive samples were specific for XMRV. Conclusions: No association between XMRV infection and CFS was observed in the samples tested, either by PCR or serological methodologies. The non-specific neutralisation observed in multiple serum samples suggests that it is unlikely that these responses were elicited by XMRV and highlights the danger of over-estimating XMRV frequency based on serological assays. In spite of this, we believe that the detection of neutralising activity that did not inhibit VSV-G pseudotyped MLV in at least four human serum samples indicates that XMRV infection may occur in the general population, although with currently uncertain outcomes

The emergence of many laundry businesses has helped the economy of laundry entrepreneurs and also working employees. However, laundry entrepreneurs often ignore the issue of waste management, resulting in environmental pollution. Many of the laundry entrepreneurs do not have a Wastewater Management Installation (WWTP) and they often dispose of laundry waste carelessly, resulting in water and environmental pollution. This also happened to laundry businesses in Yogyakarta, especially those on Jl. New Sorawajan, Banguntapan, Bantul, Yogyakarta. Based on this, this thesis wants to do further research related to waste water management in the laundry business on Jl. Sorowajan Baru, Bantul Yogyakarta from the perspective of Islamic law and positive law. The main issues in this thesis are: (1) how is the management of wastewater from the laundry business on Jl. Sorawajan Baru Yogyakarta?, and (2) how is the waste management from the laundry business viewed from the perspective of Islamic law and positive law? The purpose of this research is to: (1) find out the waste management in the laundry business on Jl. New Sorawajan Yogyakarta and (2) knowing how waste management in the laundry is from the perspective of Islamic law and positive law. This research uses a juridical-normative approach. The theory that the author uses to analyze the problem of waste management from the laundry business on Jl. Sorowajan Baru, Bantul Yogyakarta, is the theory of environmental protection in Islamic law (hifz al-bi'ah) developed by Ali Yafie and the theory of environmental protection in positive law. This research is a field research, namely research where the main data is taken directly from the field. The authors collect these data using the method of observation, interviews and documentation. The data that has been collected is then narrated by the writer and analyzed using descriptive-comparative analysis. From the research that the author has done, the following conclusions are obtained: First, most of the laundry business waste management (six out of seven laundry businesses) in the region already have a Wastewater Development Installation (IPAL) and they dispose of waste through the WWTP. This means that they have taken part in protecting and preserving the environment. Thus, the management of the laundry business complies with the provisions of Islamic law (environmental fiqh), namely by managing the waste according to existing standards. From the perspective of environmental jurisprudence, this is in accordance with the objectives of Islamic law being prescribed, one of which is protecting and preserving the environment (hifz al-bi'ah). In addition, it is also in accordance with positive legal provisions as contained in Law Number 32 of 2009 concerning Environmental Protection and Management and Bantul Regent Regulation Number 15 of 2015 concerning Permits to Utilize Wastewater. Second, a small number of laundry entrepreneurs (one out of seven laundry businesses) on Jl. Sorowajan Baru does not have an WWTP so they dispose of laundry waste carelessly. Not only that, this research also found that some laundry businesses that already have an WWTP also sometimes dispose of waste not through existing channels, but dispose of it carelessly. This is of course contrary to the objectives of establishing Islamic law (maqasid asy-shari'ah), especially in terms of the obligation to protect and preserve the environment (hifz al-bi'ah) and also contradicts the existing provisions in positive law, namely the Law Law Number 32 of 2009 concerning Environmental Protection and Management and Bantul Regent Regulation Number 15 of 2015 concerning Permits for Utilization of Wastewater
