Earlier this year, an article was published in the News Bulletin (February 2012) on the background of Captain Boyns Hedley Hocking, a dentist who became one of the first casualties in the bombing of Darwin in 1942. The author, W F Mitchell, has kindly provided a summary of the 70th anniversary activities held in Darwin in February 2012 to commemorate this significant event in the Northern Territory?s historyDate:2012-09News Bulletin no. 413, p. 36 - 37

Assessing the George W. Bush Presidency: A Tale of Two Terms

    No full text
In one of the first volumes assessing the full two terms of the George W. Bush presidency, Wroe and Herbert have gathered the work of leading American and European scholars. In fifteen succinct and incisive chapters, authorities such as Jim Pfiffner, John Maltese, Graham Wilson and Alan Gitelson offer assessments of the Bush administration's successes and failures. Extensive attention is paid to Bush's foreign policy, including 'The War on Terror' but the focus is broadened to absorb not only the Bush Doctrine and its repercussions, but also his trade and homeland security policies. The president's domestic leadership in economics and social policy is investigated, as are his dealings as president with the other institutions of the U.S. political system. The result is a comprehensive guide to the Bush presidency and its legacy

HYPOTHESIS OF RECONSTRUCTION OF THE ROMAN THEATER OF URBS SALVIA

    No full text
The modern city of Urbisaglia, Roman Urbs Salvia, features many traces of its ancient origins. One of the most noteworthy is the theater, dated at around 23 d.C. The article presents a new, hypothetical virtual reconstruction of the structure, which was carried out based on the recent research of the geometric framework used by Roman architects in design. The principal intention of the article is to demonstrate the methodology of the study, in the case of a monument characterized by poor state of preservation

Filter-Based Active Damping of Voltage Source Converters With LCLLCL Filter

    No full text
Pulsewidth modulation (PWM) voltage source converters are becoming a popular interface to the power grid for many applications. Hence, issues related to the reduction of PWM harmonics injection in the power grid are becoming more relevant. The use of high-order filters like LCL filters is a standard solution to provide the proper attenuation of PWM carrier and sideband voltage harmonics. However, those grid filters introduce potentially unstable dynamics that should be properly damped either passively or actively. The second solution suffers from control and system complexity (a high number of sensors and a high-order controller), even if it is more attractive due to the absence of losses in the damping resistors and due to its flexibility. An interesting and straightforward active damping solution consists in plugging in, in cascade to the main controller, a filter that should damp the unstable dynamics. No more sensors are needed, but there are open issues such as preserving the bandwidth, robustness, and limited complexity. This paper provides a systematic approach to the design of filter-based active damping methods. The tuning procedures, performance, robustness, and limitations of the different solutions are discussed with theoretical analysis, selected simulation, and experimental results

Prenatal sonographic features of a rhabdoid tumor of the kidney

    No full text
Rhabdoid tumors of the kidney are highly lethal malignancies of infancy. We report the prenatal detection of a renal rhabdoid tumor with mesoblastic components in a fetus at 27 weeks of gestation. The tumor presented as a large mass in the left renal area and there was concomitant massive polyhydramnios. Though the sonographic features alone did not allow distinction from a benign lesion, the aggressive tumor growth indicated malignancy. Amniotic fluid cytology was performed but failed to confirm the diagnosis. Corticosteroids were administered for lung maturation. Tocolysis, including betamimetics, magnesium and indomethacin, was performed to prevent premature labor. Additionally, serial amniodrainage was performed. At 30 weeks of gestation fetal hydrops developed and a Cesarean section was performed. After delivery, ventilation of the preterm infant was insufficient due to diaphragm elevation by the huge tumor, requiring immediate tumor surgery. However, though ventilation was improved the infant died of cardiac failure 4 h after surgery

    Picard-Fuchs equations and special geometry

We investigate the system of holomorphic differential identities implied by special K\"ahlerian geometry of four-dimensional N=2 supergravity. For superstring compactifications on \cy threefolds these identities are equivalent to the Picard-Fuchs equations of algebraic geometry that are obeyed by the periods of the holomorphic three-form. For one variable they reduce to linear fourth-order equations which are characterized by classical WW-generators; we find that the instanton corrections to the Yukawa couplings are directly related to the non-vanishing of w4w_4. We also show that the symplectic structure of special geometry can be related to the fact that the Yukawa couplings can be written as triple derivatives of some holomorphic function FF. Moreover, we give the precise relationship of the Yukawa couplings of special geometry with three-point functions in topological field theory. We investigate the system of holomorphic differential identities implied by special K\"ahlerian geometry of four--dimensional N=2N=2 supergravity.
