Gratian's Decretum: The living document of the 12th century
Our project goal was to track the numerous influences on the Decretum over the years and which places in Europe that various copies of it circulated to, all in the hopes of gaining a more-informed understanding of its role in the development of Civil Law and Canon Law in Europe from the 1100s onward
Unlocking the mysteries of the past: Searching for clues in medieval manuscripts
This project looks at the reproduction of one mid-12th-century Roman text by analyzing sixteen versions of it that still exist, copied from c. 1160 through c. 1325. The author was Nicolaus Maniacutius, a cleric at St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome. That original copy is lost, but versions quickly appeared in monasteries and cathedrals in Italy, Germany, France, and England. Somehow, through networks of communication and travel, reproductions were made and collected by prominent monasteries and churches, and by the Guildhall, a secular institution in the City of London

This mode provides access to very small inner working angles (even separations slightly below the Michelson limit of 0.5λ/D for an interferometer), which are inaccessible with the classical inner working angles of the JWST coronagraphs. When combined with JWST's unprecedented infrared sensitivity, this mode has the potential to probe a new portion of parameter space across a wide array of astronomical observations. Using this mode, we are able to achieve a 5σ contrast of ΔmF380M ∼ 7.62 ± 0.13 mag relative to the host star at separations ≳0
07, and the contrast deteriorates steeply at separations ≲0
07. However, we detect no additional companions interior to the known companion HIP 65426b (at separation ∼0
82 or
). Our observations thus rule out companions more massive than 10–12 MJup at separations ∼10–20 au from HIP 65426, a region out of reach of ground- or space-based coronagraphic imaging. These observations confirm that the AMI mode on JWST is sensitive to planetary mass companions at close-in separations (≳0
07), even for thousands of more distant stars at ∼100 pc, in addition to the stars in the nearby young moving groups and associations, as stated in previous works. This result will allow the planning and successful execution of future observations to probe the inner regions of nearby stellar systems, opening an essentially unexplored parameter space. © 2025. At a separation of ∼0.″82 (87 − 31 + 108 au), HIP 65426b is clearly detected in all seven of our observational filters, representing the first images of an exoplanet to be obtained by JWST, and the first-ever direct detection of an exoplanet beyond 5 μm. These observations demonstrate that JWST is exceeding its nominal predicted performance by up to a factor of 10, depending on separation and subtraction method, with measured 5σ contrast limits of ∼1 × 10 and ∼2 × 10 at 1″ for NIRCam at 4.4 μm and MIRI at 11.3 μm, respectively. These contrast limits provide sensitivity to sub-Jupiter companions with masses as low as 0.3M beyond separations of ∼100 au. Together with existing ground-based near-infrared data, the JWST photometry are fit well by a BT-SETTL atmospheric model from 1 to 16 μm, and they span ∼97% of HIP 65426b's luminous range. Independent of the choice of model atmosphere, we measure an empirical bolometric luminosity that is tightly constrained between log L bol / L ⊙ = −4.31 and −4.14, which in turn provides a robust mass constraint of 7.1 ± 1.2 M . In totality, these observations confirm that JWST presents a powerful and exciting opportunity to characterize the population of exoplanets amenable to high-contrast imaging in greater detail. © 2023. VHS 1256 b is a <20 MJup widely separated (∼8'', a = 150 au), young, planetary-mass companion that shares photometric colors and spectroscopic features with the directly imaged exoplanets HR 8799c, d, and e. As an L-to-T transition object, VHS 1256 b exists along the region of the color–magnitude diagram where substellar atmospheres transition from cloudy to clear. We observed VHS 1256 b with JWST's NIRSpec IFU and MIRI MRS modes for coverage from 1 to 20 μm at resolutions of ∼1000–3700. Water, methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sodium, and potassium are observed in several portions of the JWST spectrum based on comparisons from template brown dwarf spectra, molecular opacities, and atmospheric models. The spectral shape of VHS 1256 b is influenced by disequilibrium chemistry and clouds. We directly detect silicate clouds, the first such detection reported for a planetary-mass companion. © 2023. In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of this data set utilizing a forward-modeling approach applying our Bayesian framework, ForMoSA. We explore five distinct atmospheric models to assess their performance in estimating key atmospheric parameters: T eff, log(g), [M/H], C/O, γ, f sed, and R. Our findings reveal that each parameter's estimate is significantly influenced by factors such as the wavelength range considered and the model chosen for the fit. This is attributed to systematic errors in the models and their challenges in accurately replicating the complex atmospheric structure of VHS 1256 b, notably the complexity of its clouds and dust distribution. To propagate the impact of these systematic uncertainties on our atmospheric property estimates, we introduce innovative fitting methodologies based on independent fits performed on different spectral windows. We finally derived a T eff consistent with the spectral type of the target, considering its young age, which is confirmed by our estimate of log(g). Despite the exceptional data quality, attaining robust estimates for chemical abundances [M/H] and C/O, often employed as indicators of formation history, remains challenging. Nevertheless, the pioneering case of JWST's data for VHS 1256 b has paved the way for future acquisitions of substellar spectra that will be systematically analyzed to directly compare the properties of these objects and correct the systematics in the models. © 2024. Detection and Bulk Properties of the HR 8799 Planets with High-resolution Spectroscopy
Using the Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer, we obtained high-resolution (R ∼ 35,000) K-band spectra of the four planets orbiting HR 8799. We clearly detected H2O and CO in the atmospheres of HR 8799 c, d, and e, and tentatively detected a combination of CO and H2O in b. These are the most challenging directly imaged exoplanets that have been observed at high spectral resolution to date when considering both their angular separations and flux ratios. We developed a forward-modeling framework that allows us to jointly fit the spectra of the planets and the diffracted starlight simultaneously in a likelihood-based approach and obtained posterior probabilities on their effective temperatures, surface gravities, radial velocities, and spins. We measured v sin (i) values of 10.1-2.7+2.8km s-1 for HR 8799 d and 15.0-2.6+2.3 km s-1 for HR 8799 e, and placed an upper limit of <14 km s-1 of HR 8799 c. Under two different assumptions of their obliquities, we found tentative evidence that rotation velocity is anticorrelated with companion mass, which could indicate that magnetic braking with a circumplanetary disk at early times is less efficient at spinning down lower-mass planets. © 2021. Magrath Tadpole Stingers
Fri. Nov. 24, was once again a day to
remember in the annals of the Magrath
Tadpoles. A worthy Raymond opponent once
again succumbed to a relentless barrage of
offensive power & stingy defence. Again the
cunning and dare we say strategic coaching
ingenuity was ever present. Shutouts were
recorded by Jonathan (Gump) Holt & David
(Jacques) Harker. A noticeable improvement
in skating & playmaking was portrayed by
Tyson Hudson & Christian Johnson. Goals
scored were by Cole Barnertt-Hat trick,
Connor Barnett-Hat trick, Casey Hillmer-2,
Jeff Ripley-l, Cole Schneyder-2. Assists by
Cole Barnett-1. Final score Magrath-11
Raymond-0.
Sat. Nov. 25 was a day of infamy for the
Magrath Tadpoles as they lost their 1st game.
A most formidable Milk River team unleashed
a high powered offense that was kept in check
by great defence & goal tending by
Jeff(Sawchuk)Ripley, Casey(Cheevers)Hillmer
& Cole(Dryden)Schneyder. Our boys on
offense were by no means asleep as they
relentlessly peppered Milk Rivers net
minder(an obvious Maple Leaf farm team
plant) but managed only 4 goals. Goals scored
were Cole Barnett-Hat trick, Cole Schneyder-1.
Assists were by Jonathan Holt-1. Final score
Milk River-11, Magrath-4.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH NOVEMBER 1995
THANK YOU to the Lions Club in our
town for their part in bringing Lions Quest
to our school.
On Nov. 20, 21 & 23, I was fortunate
enough to attend the workshop held in
Cardston for the teachers. I went as a parent
to find out about it. I feel the program is
excellent and glad we have it here in Magrath.
Anyone who wants to know more about it
feel free to call me or the school - it's very
exciting. Thanks Again "LIONS" for Lions
Quest. Margo Schneyder 758-6709.
