aE Journal 2015/2016: aE/INTECTURE innovating architecture
The graduation studio of Architectural Engineering focuses on the integration of (new) technology in architecture. For this purpose, the name aE/ INTECTURE® was devised, which will be developed further as a brand in the coming years. Students start with a technical fascination and translate this into an architectural concept, finally being able to implement this within the environment in a responsible way. ‘If technology is the answer, what is the question?‘ Under the guidance of a team of enthusiastic (guest) lecturers, students search for the dot on the horizon that is necessary for coming up with solutions that improve the quality of the built environment and make it more sustainable. Acoustic, aerodynamic, physiologic, and perceptual properties of modal and vocal fry registers
The purpose of the study was to examine the acoustic, aerodynamic, physiologic, and perceptual characteristics of modal and vocal fry production. Twenty normal speakers (10 males, 10 females) participated in the study. Speech material included four sustained vowels (/i/, /a/, /ae/, /u/), and syllable strings of/pi/repetitions produced in both modal and vocal fry registers. Acoustic data (fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, and signal- to-noise ratio), aerodynamic data (airflow and air pressure), and electroglottographic (EGG) data were obtained simultaneously. Results demonstrated considerable differences across voice parameters for the modal and vocal fry registers. Fundamental frequency was significantly lower in vocal fry than in modal register for both males and females, however, significant gender differences existed only in modal register. For both males and females, measurements of jitter and shimmer were significantly higher and signal to noise ratio was significantly lower in vocal fry. In addition, airflow rate in modal register was almost three times as high as the airflow rate in vocal fry register during sustained vowel production. During syllable string production, subglottal air pressure values in modal register were approximately 1.5 times higher than that in the vocal fry register. In general, these data emphasize that the aeromechanical mechanisms of vocal fold vibratory behavior are substantially different between modal and vocal fry registers. Main motifs in the prose of the leftist author Kang Kyŏng-ae
The subject of this bachelor thesis is the life and work of the Korean writer Kang Kyǒng-ae, with a focus on her short prose. The aim of this thesis is an analysis of two works - Salt and Darkness - with attention to the context of the author's time. Nowadays, Kang Kyǒng-ae is considered a significant author of the 1930s and her works reflect the phenomenon of Korean emigrants in Manchuria. For a long time, leftist tendencies caused her prose to be neglected, which resulted in a considerably limited number of studies concerned with her work, in comparison to the number of studies about other writers. There are virtually no Czech studies of her work. The text of the thesis initially presents the timeframe of Kang's authorship and then analyzes select works of hers. Corresponding Author Study of effects Aloe vera extract supplemented feed on hematological and immunological indices of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Aloe vera extract (AE) on the immunity responses and hematological parameters in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fry to develop alternative drug to chemotherapeutics and antibiotics in aquaculture. 1200 rainbow trout (Oncorynchus mykiss) fry weighing 2±0.2 gram were randomly allocated into two treatment groups including: 1) placebo-treated group (control), 2) Aloe vera extract-treated group, each of three replicates. The fishes were hand-fed once a day with diet medicated AE or placebo at a rate of 1% of feed weight in the first feeding for 8 weeks. At the end of every two weeks 24 hrs after feeding, some of hematological and immunological parameters were analyzed. The results showed that serum total protein, albumin and globulin, respiratory burst activity, phagocytic activity and serum lysozyme activity vary among the two treatment groups which were found to be higher in AE-treated group (p<0.05). However there were no significant differences in hematological parameters between two groups. It was concluded that supplementation of AE at a rate of 1% registered higher immunological responses in compared to placebo group. Therefore, supplementation of AE in fish diets would enhance the nonspecific immunity responses and would be use particularly at time of outbreaks
Autour du Nepos d'Alburnus, Maior, Panes, fils de Bizo (AE, 20081167=AE, 2007, 1201) : petit-fils ou neveu
International audienceIn this article, the author studies again the inscription on a stone of a nepos from Alburnus Maior: Panes, son of Bizo (AE, 2008, 1167 = AE,2007, 1201). If the word nepos very often means « grandson », there are cases where it means « nephew ». The author pays special attention to the Latin kinship terminology in this inscription because names and lines are not Roman but peregrine. So, there is ambiguity as we cannot exactly know the relations between all these names. Now, between a grandfather and his grandson or an uncle and his nephew, there is the same number of generations. It is necessary for one to compare these to other inscriptions and words in addition to nepos (auia, auus, nurus, gener, pater, mater) or only with nepos in Rhenodanubian provinces (Raetia, Pannoniae, Moesiae, Dacia): these 67 inscriptions are in an appendix.The author concludes that the these two possibilities exist here
The susceptibility of Atlantic salmon fry to freshwater infectious pancreatic necrosis is largely explained by a major QTL
Infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is a viral disease with a significant negative impact on the global aquaculture of Atlantic salmon. IPN outbreaks can occur during specific windows of both the freshwater and seawater stages of the salmon life cycle. Previous research has shown that a proportion of the variation seen in resistance to IPN is because of host genetics, and we have shown that major quantitative trait loci (QTL) affect IPN resistance at the seawater stage of production. In the current study, we completed a large freshwater IPN challenge experiment to allow us to undertake a thorough investigation of the genetic basis of resistance to IPN in salmon fry, with a focus on previously identified QTL regions. The heritability of freshwater IPN resistance was estimated to be 0.26 on the observed scale and 0.55 on the underlying scale. Our results suggest that a single QTL on linkage group 21 explains almost all the genetic variation in IPN mortality under our experimental conditions. A striking contrast in mortality is seen between fry classified as homozygous susceptible versus homozygous resistant, with QTL-resistant fish showing virtually complete resistance to IPN mortality. The findings highlight the importance of the major QTL in the genetic regulation of IPN resistance across distinct physiological lifecycle stages, environmental conditions and viral isolates. These results have clear scientific and practical implications for the control of IPN
Performance evaluation of the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensing device and comparison with piezoelectric sensors for AE detection
In-service structural health monitoring (SHM) of engineering structures has assumed a significant role in assessing their safety and integrity. As the most mature technique in fiber-optic field, Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors have emerged as a reliable, in situ and nondestructive tool for monitoring and diagnostics in large-scale structure. Main objectives of this work are to evaluate and compare the acoustic emission (AE) sensing characteristics simultaneously with FBG sensor array and piezoelectric (PZ) sensors. The pencil-lead-break (PLB) test, ball dropping test and the excitation from the PZ transducer are treated as the AE source which conducted on the platy and blocky structure respectively for acoustic wave. The source repeatability will be verified to choose the source with more stable performance. A commercial 4-channel FBG AE detection device was used to compare with the PZ sensor on the amplitude and frequency response which can indicate the sensitivity of the sensors. The low sensitivity and low sampling rate are the main issue for the engineering application of the FBG sensors. Besides, the sensitivity and directional dependence of the FBG sensor have been discussed. It shows that the encapsulation method of the FBG sensor will impact both of them significantly.</p
Acoustic Emission as a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) method for stay cables: Research into the possibilities of AE for stay cables of cable stayed bridges
The stay cables of the north bridge of the Galecopperbrug are reaching the end of their life span. Rijkswaterstaat, which is responsible for the bridges, needs a reliable Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) method to monitor the current state of the stay cables. At the moment, Rijkswaterstaat experiences issues with defining the state and the residual life span of the stay cables of the Galecopperbrug. This study focuses on the technique of Acoustic Emission (AE) for monitoring the stay cables of the Galecopperbrug. The main research question of this study was: “Is the AE-system used in a fracture-based assessment suitable for structural health monitoring of the stay cables of the Galecopperbrug?”. In this study the following methods were used to investigate the AE behaviour of stay cables: a literature study on previous research and the current knowledge of AE and the structural behaviour of cables was done, a full-scale and two verification experiments were performed to investigate the AE behaviour related to wire breaks and to investigate the accuracy of linear source location techniques, an analytical model of the stay cables was made to investigate the influence of different parameters to the capacity of the stay cables and to predict the stress distribution in the wires during the experiment and finally, a SCIA model of the Galecopperbrug was used to investigate the load bearing distribution of the Galecopperbrug. In this study, it was found that wire breaks inside (stay) cables will generate elastic stress waves which can be captured and recorded by AE sensors. Based on an experiment where multiple wire breaks occurred, it was shown that wire breaks can be identified with the help of AE techniques. However, the identification of wire breaks is mainly depending on the correct choice of sensor type. Based on the experiments and assumptions that were made in this study the R6I-AST type of sensors are more suitable for wire break detection and the R3I-AST sensors are more suitable for AE signals due to impacts. Based on the assumptions and the experiments performed in this study it can be concluded that AE can be used in a fracture-based assessment for SHM of the stay cables of the Galecopperbrug.Civil Engineering | Structural Engineerin
