    Transition to siblinghood causes a substantial and long-lasting increase in urinary cortisol levels in wild bonobos

    In animals with slow ontogeny and long-term maternal investment, immatures are likely to experience the birth of a younger sibling before reaching maturity. In these species, the birth of a sibling marks a major event in an offspring's early life, as the older siblings experience a decrease in maternal support. The transition to siblinghood (TTS) is often considered to be stressful for the older offspring, but physiological evidence is lacking. To explore the TTS in wild bonobos, we investigated physiological changes in urinary cortisol (stress response), neopterin (cell-mediated immunity), and total triiodothyronine (T3, metabolic rate), as well as changes in behaviors that reflect the mother-offspring relationship. Following a sibling's birth, urinary cortisol levels of the older offspring increased fivefold, independent of their age, and remained elevated for seven months. The cortisol level increase was associated with declining neopterin levels, however T3 levels and behavioral measures did not change. Our results indicate that the TTS is accompanied by elevated cortisol levels and that this change does not coincide with nutritional weaning and attainment of physical independence. Our results suggest that bonobos and humans experience TTS in similar ways and that this developmental event may have emerged in the last common ancestor

    Challenges in Checking JSON Schema Containment over Evolving Real-World Schemas

    JSON Schema is maturing into the de-facto schema language for JSON documents. When JSON Schema declarations evolve, the question arises how the new schema will deal with JSON documents that still adhere to the legacy schema. This is particularly crucial in the maintenance of software APIs. In this paper, we present the results of our empirical study of the first generation of tools for checking JSON Schema containment which we apply to a diverse collection of over 230 real-world schemas and their altogether 1k historic versions. We assess two such special-purpose tools w.r.t. their applicability to real-world schemas and identify weak spots. Based on this analysis, we enumerate specific open research challenges that are based on real-world problems

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Optimal trade execution and absence of price manipulations in limit order book models

    We analyze the existence of price manipulation and optimal trade execution strategies in a model for an electronic limit order book with nonlinear price impact and exponential resilience. Our main results show that, under general conditions on the shape function of the limit order book, placing deterministic trade sizes at trading dates that are homogeneously spaced is optimal within a large class of adaptive strategies with arbitrary trading dates. This extends results from our earlier work with A. Fruth. Perhaps even more importantly, our analysis yields as a corollary that our model does not admit price manipulation strategies. This latter result contrasts the recent findings of Gatheral [12], where, in a related but different model, exponential resilience was found to give rise to price manipulation strategies when price impact is nonlinear.

    Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses

    Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied

    Disparate Roles of Cell–Cell Contact and Cytokine Secretion in an In Vitro Model of the Seminoma Microenvironment

    Type II testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) are the most common solid malignancies in young men and are classified into seminomas and non-seminomatous subtypes. Seminomas are known for their highly pro-inflammatory tumor microenvironment (TME) with abundant immune cell infiltration. While previous work has demonstrated that the seminoma-derived cell line TCam-2 induces immune cell activation in co-culture and undergoes phenotypic changes itself, the underlying mechanisms remained unclear. To explore the role of direct cell–cell interaction and the effects mediated by soluble mediators such as cytokines, we conducted co-culture experiments of TCam-2 cells with purified human T cells or monocytes, including Transwell assays and treatments with IL-6, TNFα, or their respective blocking antibodies Tocilizumab and Adalimumab. In this way, we found that immune cell activation, indicated by enhanced secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and an upregulation of activation markers, strongly depended on direct physical contact between both cell types. Nonetheless, we also unveiled the role of soluble mediators in both immune cell activation and promoting a shift in TCam-2 cells from a seminoma-like phenotype to a more dedifferentiated phenotype, suggesting that cytokines critically shape the TME. These observations highlight the complexity of tumor–immune interactions in the seminoma microenvironment, offering new insight into immune-driven dynamics in TGCTs

    A test suite for JSON schema containment

    JSON is a very popular data exchange format, and JSON Schema an increasingly popular schema language for JSON. Evidently, schemas play an important role in implementing conceptual models. For JSON Schema, there is a first generation of tools for checking whether one schema is contained in another. This is an important task when comparing schemas, and ultimately, the conceptual models that they capture. Testing whether such tool implementations are correct is difficult, since writing test cases requires a deep understanding of the JSON Schema language. In this demo, we present the first systematically generated test suite for JSON Schema containment checking. This test suite consists of pairs of schemas where the containment relationship is known by construction. Our test suite aims at covering all language features of JSON Schema. Applying existing containment checkers (including our own implementation) to our test suite, we discovered implementation bugs not known to us. We offer our test suite to the research community as well as to tool developers, hoping to contribute to the development of JSON Schema containment checkers
