Thesis (M.A. (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010The wide variety of magazines in the South African market and the economic relapse that has been
experienc,e d worldwide has given rise to the increasing competition for higher circulation figures
and advertising income. This phenomenon especially occurs between publications competing for
the same target audience, such as the women's magazines SARIE and rooi rose, competitors over
many years in the Afrikaans magazine market.
Magazine covers play a critical role in this rivalry due to the direct connection between the
popularity of the cover and circulation figures. The more popular the cover of a publication, the
higher the sales, circulation and potential profitability will be. Thus it is of the utmost importance for
any publication to make the suitable cover selections, considering that the wrong choices can
contribute towards a decrease in circulation and eventually fatal consequences for the publication.
This study endeavours to determine which requirements magazine covers should meet to
be successful and also which tendencies can be identified in the cover choices of SARIE and rooi
rose and how these tendencies can be explained.
In literature it was found that there are several requirements and directions to which
magazine covers should account to be able to be achieving success. It was also found that
magazine covers consist of several elements, such as the logo (master-head), cover-girl/-photo,
background colours, text and also competitions (announced on the cover).
SARIE and rooi rose's covers were analysed in accordance with the requirements for
magazine covers. It was found that these magazine covers complied with the formal requirements
formulated in the literature consulted. It also appeared that the success of every cover and edition
is determined by the cover elements as a whole and not only the popularity of the "cover-girl" only.
Several aspects should thus be taken into account when planning the magazine cover.
It also appeared that although the cover choice sets an agenda for readers concerning the
topics they will eventually be thinking about and discussing, another dimension of agenda-setting
rather is to the point, namely the role readers' preferences play (through their personal feedback
and buying of magazines) regarding editors' decision in respect of covers.Master
Thesis (MA)--PU for CHE, 1999Title: The journalistic orientation function of Beeld, Rapport, and Die Kerkbode with
regard to homosexuality, abortion, and gambling.
This study describes how three important South African Afrikaans newspapers (Beeld,
Rapport and Die Kerkbode) fulfilled the journalistic orientation function with regard to
three subjects of ethical concern, namely homosexuality, abortion, and gambling,
during 1995.
Each of the three newspapers has a different journalistic character. Bee/dis a daily
paper, Rapport a Sunday paper, and Die Kerkbode the official magazine of the Dutch
Reformed Church.
These three ethical issues are pertinent in the South African context. Before the
political reforms which began in the early 1990s, homosexual practice, abortion and
gambling were forbidden by law. During 1995 the respective laws were changed
(homosexuality) or were in the process of being changed (abortion and gambling) to
allow these practices, albeit within some loosely defined limits.
A theoretical framework regarding the journalistic orientation function was developed
and applied in this study. Christian principles such as the views that man was created in
the image of God and that communication is a basic structure of God's creation, were
used as a point of departure. A fundamental point in this framework was that every
journalistic report is influenced by the specific world view of its author, which implies
that objectivity in journalism is impossible. It is then argued that the press is obliged to
fulfill an orientation function, that is, to contribute to the audience's processing and
understanding of reality.
Five theoretical theses were formulated and used in a qualitative content analysis of all
the news reports and articles from the three papers regarding homosexuality, abortion
and gambling for 1995. The findings show that the three papers apparently fulfilled
most of the basic requirements of the orientation function. However, some weak points
were also identified.
The study endeavoured to make a contribution to mass communication (ethics) from a
Christian perspective.Master
Thesis (MA (Bedryfskommunikasie))--PU for CHE, 1998People want to know what happens in their community. This need for information is gratified by newspapers. The editorial staff of a local newspaper are aware of this and they create a news agenda to satisfy these needs.
The creation of an Afrikaans local weekly paper, Noord-Transvaler Metro, is the topic of this study. By studying the front-page agenda of Metro, it can be determined what the editorial staff did to attract people to read Metro and thus establish it. Interviews were held with people involved in the creation of Metro and documents studied to determine the history of Metro, which was to a certain extent, a replacement for the daily Transvaler.
The agenda-setting theory and the needs and gratification theory were used in this study as an explanation for the relationship between what people want in a local paper and what Metro put on its front page to become viable. A qualitative data-analysis shows that Metro's front-page agenda mainly focused on the different municipalities in its distribution area (Greater Pretoria), crime and sport. Metro's front-page agenda was evaluated in terms of criteria set for local newspapers in various publications. It was also compared to what the editor of Metro had stated as the planned news agenda for the newspaper. Metro's front page layout was studied and compared with the theories of Garcia (1993). Attention was given to the placement of articles and photos, the use of colour and the use of graphics and teasers. In conclusion it can be said that Metro's front page agenda satisfied the requirements for a local newspapers' news agenda described in literature. In
many ways the front-page layout complies with Garcia's theories.Master
Thesis (M.A. (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.This treatise deals with the conciliatory role that the three Klerksdorp
newspapers, Wes-Transvaal Rekord, Lentswe and the Klerksdorpse Rekord,
played in the year before the general elections of April 27th, 1994 in South
Africa. This conciliatory role has been determined with the use of elements
from normative models for developmental and civic journalism. Two
theoretical positions have been formulated, based on these two models.
From this it appears that developmental journalism is all about encouraging
tolerance, about nation building and about the strengthening of desirable
relations. Civic journalism consists of giving insight in the structures of society,
encouraging of commitment, guide-dog function (along with the role of
watchdog), stimulation of civic consultation and the bringing to pass of
reconciliation.
By means of these features a qualitative analysis has been made of the
content of the three newspapers in the period between May 1993 and April
1994. From this it appeared clearly that the newspapers desired to play a
conciliatory role. The emphasis was laid on nation building, on encouraging
tolerance and on reconciliation. The conciliatory role of the newspapers has
been affirmed by six interviewees who played an important role in the
preparations for the 1994 general elections in Klerksdorp and surroundings.
It has also been determined that the editorial staffs of the three newspapers
consciously chose to play this conciliatory role. This not only appeared from
the content of the newspapers, but also from editorials and from the answers
of the above-mentioned interviewees. The three newspapers served different
readerships and were distinct in their organisations. It has been determined
that each of them played a conciliatory role that was most suitable for their
readership.Master
The creation of an internet public sphere by the Independent Electoral Commission
Thesis (M.A. (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.A prerequisite for a healthy, sustainable democracy is an informed citizenry that partakes in the democratic process. This line of thought can be drawn back to the work of Habermas (Habermas, 1989:49). Accordingly, such active engagement necessitates communication to transpire between a citizenry and its chosen representatives as to sustain the democratic process. This also suggests that citizens should be able to participate in the communication process. Consequently, in recent years much discourse on the media and democracy correlation has focused on the potential role that the internet could play in the furtherance of democratic values.
Optimistically, a virtual political public forum in which matters of general political concern are discussed could enhance political participation and the consolidation of political rights. The
Habermasian public-sphere model incorporates three key elements, which could be applied in this context persons should have universal access to the sphere, the freedom to express diverse opinions, the freedom to receive diverse opinions and information, in addition to the freedom of participating in the public sphere without interference from state or mercantile imperatives (cf.Habermas, 1989). A qualitative content analysis of the web site of Elections Canada showed that the supposedly non-operational public-sphere model could be recovered within a new media context such as the internet despite the fact that the inherent interactive nature of the internet was not fully exploited by Elections Canada. Against this background, the assumption was made that the public-sphere's concepts could also be applied in the context of a developing democracy and accordingly that the sustainability of
the democratic system could be further consolidated. The Electoral Commission (IEC) was chosen as a case study, since it is constitutionally mandated to establish a democratic South African society. The creation of an internet public sphere could therefore be one of the ways in
which the IEC could contribute to this consolidation process. Through extensive content analysis, it was established that the organisational web site of the IEC was mainly expended as an information dissemination and organisational image-profiling tool. As a result the web site was did not focus on participatory communication. Universal access to the web site was also rather restricted, resulting in limited web site participation to voters from specific socio-economic, cultural, and language backgrounds. It was discovered, nevertheless, that some of the contents available on the web site could at least facilitate 'offline" participatory democracy and public opinion formation. Therefore, although the web site did not implement all of the normative prescriptions of the public-sphere ideal, voters were able to
retrieve valuable electoral information that would assist them in capably participating in electoral democracy.Master
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Master
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
