Phasing quality assessment in a brown layer population through family- and population-based software
Haplotype data contains more information than genotype data and provides possibilities such as imputing low frequency variants, inferring points of recombination, detecting recurrent mutations, mapping linkage disequilibrium (LD), studying selection signatures, estimating IBD probabilities, etc. In addition, haplotype structure is used to assess genetic diversity and expected accuracy in genomic selection programs. Nevertheless, the quality and efficiency of phasing has rarely been a subject of thorough study but was assessed mainly as a by-product in imputation quality studies. Long-term assessment of variable rate N-fertilization in a Vitis vinifera L. 'Barbera' vineyard
Variable rate technologies allow site-specific management of parcels characterized by different levels of vigor and/or yield. N-fertilization based on actual plant needs is one of the most promising applications of precision farming aiming at improving efficiency, optimizing yield-to-quality relationship as well as limiting environmental impact. Although this strategy appears suitable for developing new viticultural models, few experiences validating this hypothesis are available in literature. Based on a pre-trial remotely sensed vigor map (NDVI-derived, 5 m resolution) a four-year study was performed in a Vitis vinifera L. 'Barbera' vineyard situated in the Colli Piacentini wine district. Vigor level (L = low, M = medium and H = high) and fertilization strategy (standard, variable rate application, and unfertilized control) were the main factors in a randomized block design. For each vigor level the study compared no N-supply (0 kg ha-1), standard supply (60 kg ha-1) and VRA supply delivering 0, 60 and 120 kg ha-1 to H, M and L, respectively. Post-trial effects were assessed by remote and proximal sensing considering a 5 m multispectral image and a very high resolution characterization of the canopy growth, respectively. Vine growth, yield, leaf nutritional status and fruit composition were assessed. Results show that variability among vigor levels was significantly reduced over year 3 and 4, whereas effects related to fertilization strategy were often non-significant. The canopy index calculated by proximal sensing proved that VRA was able to reduce variability among vigor levels (CV=1.42%) vs. standard fertilization at 60 kg ha-1 (8.20%). Leaf area did not vary among strategies while N-fertilization affected yield and vine balance. Despite VRA increased yield as compared to Standard, technological and phenolic maturity was similar in both fertilization strategies. The VRA reduced N waste in H while vines from L blocks showed a low sensitivity to increased N-supply
A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. L’obiettivo del partenariato è quello di individuare nuove soluzioni per migliorare la competitività e la sostenibilità della viticoltura non irrigua della collina Emiliana. Due azioni del progetto sono incentrate sulla verifica dell’efficacia e degli effetti di idrogel e polimeri superassorbenti su nuovi impianti e vigneti adulti, in relazione alle problematiche imposte dal cambiamento climatico. Kaolin reduces ABA biosynthesis through the inhibition of neoxanthin synthesis in grapevines under water deficit
In many viticulture regions, multiple summer stresses are occurring with increased frequency and severity because of warming trends. Kaolin-based particle film technology is a technique that can mitigate the negative effects of intense and/or prolonged drought on grapevine physiology. Although a primary mechanism of action of kaolin is the increase of radiation reflection, some indirect effects are the protection of canopy functionality and faster stress recovery by abscisic acid (ABA) regulation. The physiological mechanism underlying the kaolin regulation of canopy functionality under water deficit is still poorly understood. In a dry-down experiment carried out on grapevines, at the peak of stress and when control vines zeroed whole-canopy net CO2 exchange rates/leaf area (NCER/LA), kaolin-treated vines maintained positive NCER/LA (~2 μmol m−2 s−1) and canopy transpiration (E) (0.57 μmol m−2 s−1). Kaolin-coated leaves had a higher violaxanthin (Vx) + antheraxanthin (Ax) + zeaxanthin (Zx) pool and a significantly lower neoxanthin (Nx) content (VAZ) when water deficit became severe. At the peak of water shortage, leaf ABA suddenly increased by 4-fold in control vines, whereas in kaolin-coated leaves the variation of ABA content was limited. Overall, kaolin prevented the biosynthesis of ABA by avoiding the deviation of the VAZ epoxidation/de-epoxidation cycle into the ABA precursor (i.e., Nx) biosynthetic direction. The preservation of the active VAZ cycle and transpiration led to an improved dissipation of exceeding electrons, explaining the higher resilience of canopy functionality expressed by canopies sprayed by kaolin. These results point out the interaction of kaolin with the regulation of the VAZ cycle and the active mechanism of stomatal conductance regulation
The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law
Abstract
The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals
Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
A MODIFIED CASE STUDY EXAMINING THE EFFECTS OF SPECIFIC SCHOOL GRADE-LEVEL ORGANIZATIONAL MODELS ON NINTH-GRADE LEARNERS
This doctoral dissertation represents a qualitative study employing a modified case study research design that is intended to assess the perspectives of school practitioners (i.e., principals, guidance counselors, and teachers) who work with ninth graders relevant to their perceptions of the developmental needs of those students, how their respective schools address those needs, and the effects their schools’ grade-level organizational plans may have on grade nine. This study employs semi-structured interviews, document reviews, and direct observations for data collection. Two case sites were selected for this dissertation—one populated by students in grades nine through twelve (9-12) and another with pupils in grades seven through nine (7-9). Both sites were selected purposefully on the basis of their grade-level configurations, their contemporary and historical relevance to ninth-grade-level education, and their proximity to the principal researcher. Sample groups at each school included 10 practitioners who worked directly with ninth graders within a multitude of professional realms, particularly administration, counseling, and teaching. Upon site selection, building principals were recruited for participation in this study; henceforth, those subjects selected nine other participants of faculty rank based on their professional positions and affiliations with students at the ninth-grade level.
The data seems to indicate that practitioners at the grades 9-12 high school perceive ninth graders differently from that of their counterparts at the grades 7-9 junior high school. The high-school subjects generally describe ninth graders as being immature, whereas participants at the junior high school perceive them the opposite of that. It also appears that participants at the grades 9-12 site lack consensus on the attributes of ninth-grade developmental needs with some questioning the appropriateness and/or legitimacy of four-year high schools for educating students at that grade level, while others ardently support that construct. Conversely, practitioners at the grades 7-9 junior high school seem to be unified in their perspectives on ninth-grade-level development—contending that ninth graders are better educated in junior high schools versus senior high schools and that their school is developmentally appropriate and more suitable for ninth-grade learners
