Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Benedetto Croce et Raymond Aron: deux libéraux
2006/2007È possibile mettere a confronto il pensiero politico di Benedetto Croce rispetto a quello di Raymond Aron, due intellettuali dichiaratamente liberali ma agli antipodi per metodo e contenuti del loro liberalismo?
La filosofia idealista alla base della “religione della libertà” di Croce sembra infatti porsi in modo assolutamente antitetico rispetto alle indagini sociologiche condotte dal politologo Aron e il contrasto appare in tutta la sua evidenza allorché si pensi alla crociana condanna della sociologia come “pseudoconoscenza”.
Eppure sia Croce che Aron hanno inteso il loro impegno intellettuale come un dovere che investe la responsabilità dell’uomo di cultura nella denuncia e nella lotta contro qualsiasi forma di totalitarismo e di falsificazione storica, tanto è vero che nel 1950 a Berlino partecipano tutti e due alla creazione del “Congress for cultural freedom” per mobilitare gli intellettuali di tutto il mondo nella promozione attiva della libertà contro i regimi autocratici. Entrambi si sono inoltre confrontati con gli stessi temi a partire dallo storicismo tedesco, che li ha culturalmente formati, per poi cimentarsi con il marxismo e con il realismo politico, giungendo a conclusioni sostanzialmente concordi.
Dove nascono allora le ragioni di una tale divergenza, tenuto pure conto che sono ambedue dei liberali “a-tipici” rispetto alla concezione classica di stampo anglosassone?
E’ questo il problema che mi sono proposta di affrontare, convinta che si dovesse andare oltre la semplice evidenza della contrapposizione ma soprattutto che fosse necessario trascendere l’esclusiva dimensione storica nazionale nella quale sono stati sino ad ora considerati, giacché il contesto a cui fare riferimento non poteva essere che quello più vasto della cultura europea, a cui essi avevano attinto e alla quale andavano ricondotti per essere compresi.
Ciò che ho ritenuto interessante è che solo all’interno di questa prospettiva più ampia potevano emergere i punti di svolta, i luoghi critici che li hanno portati ad interpretare gli stessi “input filosofici” in modo differente e originale, a declinare cioè la comune matrice della loro formazione filosofica secondo percorsi critici tanto diversi. Attraverso tale ottica, infatti, lungi dal giudicarli “imparagonabili”, è possibile rintracciare alcune linee di riflessione comuni e soprattutto delle finalità condivise.
Il lavoro è stato articolato in tre parti fondamentali: nella prima ho cercato di comprendere per quali ragioni e per quali vie lo studio dello storicismo tedesco e il rigetto del positivismo abbiano da un lato condotto Croce ad elaborare un sistema filosofico idealista di matrice hegeliana mentre dall’altro il medesimo confronto con lo storicismo tedesco, ma soprattutto con Dilthey, abbia portato Aron ad interrogarsi sulla storia e sulle condizioni della conoscenza storica con un approccio di stampo criticista. Lo snodo è qui rappresentato dal problematico rapporto uomo-storia che viene sussunto in termini filosofici diversi nella rispettiva riflessione.
Nella seconda parte ho invece affrontato il tema del confronto che sia Croce che Aron hanno sostenuto con pensatori come Marx e Machiavelli; ho cercato di evidenziare come il tentativo di comprendere la realtà e la scelta di prendere posizione rispetto ad essa dipenda dal loro modo di confrontarsi con la dottrina marxista e il realismo politico. Soprattutto ho segnalato come la loro condivisa critica della teoria economica marxista abbia alla base delle argomentazioni teoriche fondamentalmente dissimili dato che il rigetto di Croce è motivato dalla sua concezione dell’economia e della sociologia fondata sulla sua teoria dei distinti, mentre Aron fonda la sua condanna proprio su un’analisi sociologica e comparativa del modello capitalista rispetto a quello comunista. Lo snodo è costituito in questo caso dalla comune confutazione della filosofia della storia e del determinismo storico insiti nel marxismo in rapporto a motivazioni sostanzialmente differenti.
Nella terza parte ho affrontato il modo in cui Croce e Aron delineano il concetto di libertà alla luce delle precedenti riflessioni sulla storia e sulla base del loro realismo politico, sottolineando come entrambi rifiutino di elaborare un’idea fissa e dogmatica della libertà e la considerino come parte essenziale dell’animo umano. Tuttavia mentre Croce teorizza una concezione essenzialmente morale pensandola come il supremo ideale morale che si deve realizzare nella storia, in Aron questa dimensione eminentemente etica sembra invece assente, giacché gli preme sottolineare la molteplicità delle libertà possibili, la loro contingenza e la difesa del valore delle libertà politiche.
Ciò che tuttavia accomuna le loro diverse prospettive sulla libertà sta nel fatto che essi non hanno elaborato alcuna teoria politica circa i limiti dello stato ed il loro liberalismo non si è costruito in maniera sistematica attorno ad un nucleo teorico definito ma si è piuttosto delineato in opposizione ai totalitarismi del XX secolo e per contrastare i dogmatismi marxisti ma anche quelli liberali. Significativa in questo senso la loro attenzione al sociale che li differenzia da un liberalismo meramente conservatore. Il liberalismo di Croce si confronta con le politiche economiche e sociali di stampo socialista mentre in Aron si registra un’apertura verso il Welfare State. Lo snodo è dato questa volta dalla presenza di una comune sensibilità verso le problematiche sociali, sulla quale ancora oggi si riscontrano valutazioni discordanti della critica in relazione ad entrambi gli autori.
Tale presenza segnala invece, a mio avviso, la valenza contemporanea e l’attualità della loro riflessione che si mostra in grado di non lasciarsi imbrigliare in prospettive interpretative ideologiche ma resta, anche in Croce come in Aron, una prospettiva aperta. Si tratta di linguaggi filosofici senza dubbio diversi ma quello che è emerso dalla mia analisi è che essi, al di là delle mere apparenze, conducono sostanzialmente ad un’autentica presa di posizione liberale per così dire “nell’animo e nella condotta”. A differenza delle molte analisi sul liberalismo recentemente emerse che evidenziano sovente la pluralità di significati ad esso attribuibili, la riflessione sul pensiero liberale di Croce e di Aron, condotta sulla base di un confronto in parallelo, mi sembra rivelare come nonostante i metodi ed i contenuti diversi si possano nutrire eguali convinzioni e finalità. Procedere in questa direzione “trascendendo il contesto”, potrebbe rivelare insospettate convergenze e permettere di ricostruire un tessuto culturale autenticamente europeo partendo da una nuova prospettiva, originale rispetto all’analisi solitamente ristretta all’orizzonte della mera individualità storica.XX Cicl
