Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Aparelhos privados de hegemonia e a disputa da educação política: o caso Politize!
Get PDFO objetivo central da pesquisa é destrinçar os significados hegemônicos de ação política, de cidadania e de formação cidadã difundidos no Brasil após a década de 1990. Argumentamos que se constituiu um processo de repolitização da política, que redefiniu os sentidos e as práticas referentes a essa esfera. A difusão desses significados é tomada como um caso exemplar de disputas de concepções de mundo marcadas pelas relações de poder e levadas à frente pelos Aparelhos Privados de Hegemonia (APHs). Os APHs são considerados agentes-chave para a disputa de hegemonia, elaborando e difundindo visões de mundo de tal forma que impregnam o senso comum e orientam a prática de amplos setores da sociedade. A Politize! é compreendida como um APH patrocinado pelo empresariado e voltado para a educação política das classes dominadas. Os materiais educacionais digitais da organização foram tomados como documento empírico para essa análise. Tal opção metodológica se deu pela compreensão de que diversos educadores e educandos utilizam de plataformas digitais para sua formação pessoal e para sua prática. O foco está nas redes de conexões da entidade, às iniciativas da Escola da Cidadania Ativa e ao programa de formação de lideranças. Como objetivos específicos, delimitamos identificar as correspondências e as divergências entre as concepções e ações da entidade e aquelas formuladas por meio da pedagogia da hegemonia neoliberal, e compreender as relações dessa associação com o poder público e privado, localizando-a dentro das disputas de classe por hegemonia. As análises indicam uma rede de conexões entre representantes do empresariado nacional e internacional, organizações privadas e o poder público, demonstrando grande capacidade de estabelecer consensos e difundir suas concepções. As associações privadas passam a assumir responsabilidades até então atribuídas ao poder público, sem passar pelo crivo de um processo eleitoral decisório. No vocabulário que é difundido pela ação dos APHs, o terreno da cidadania é associado à sociedade civil, e este é tratado como um lócus do bem, da harmonia e da eficiência, sendo destituído de conflitos inerentes à arena política. Ocorre um processo de desqualificação da política, com a depreciação do papel do Estado e a negação dos debates referentes à esfera macro da sociedade. O movimento de desqualificação da política é seguido por sua repolitização. A ação política é direcionada para atitudes individuais por meio da lógica do empreendedorismo e da cooperação com os poderes público e privado. Emerge uma cidadania despolitizada, já que é alheia a discussões globais. A análise com o conceito de APH possibilita concluir que o processo de seleção de determinados significados se efetiva por meio da pedagogia da hegemonia. Determinadas concepções de mundo têm mais força quanto mais um grupo social é capaz de difundi-los como se fossem universais e desassociados de interesses específicos. A construção das concepções de cidadania, educação política e formação cidadã é percebida nessa investigação como um caso exemplar desse processoThe central objective of this research is to analyze the hegemonic meanings of political action, citizenship, and citizenship education disseminated in Brazil after the 1990s. We argue that a process of repoliticization of the political sphere has taken place, redefining the meanings and practices within this field. The dissemination of these meanings is treated as an exemplary case of disputes over worldviews, marked by power relations, and advanced by the Private Apparatuses of Hegemony (APH). APHs are understood as key agents in the struggle for hegemony, producing and diffusing worldviews that permeate common sense and guide the behavior of broad sectors of society. Politize! is examined as an APH backed by the business sector, oriented toward the political education of subaltern classes. The organization’s digital educational materials constitute the empirical sources for this analysis, acknowledging the widespread use of digital platforms by educators and learners alike. Our focus falls on the organization’s network connections, particularly the Escola da Cidadania Ativa (“Active Citizenship School”) and its leadership training program.Among the specific objectives are identifying the convergences and divergences between the entity’s conceptions and actions and those shaped by the pedagogy of neoliberal hegemony, as well to understand its relationships with public and private power, situating in within in the context of class-based struggles for hegemony. The analysis reveals a network linking the national and international business actors, private organizations, and public authorities, evidencing a strong ability to build consensus and disseminate its worldview. Private associations increasingly assume responsibilities formely attributed to the public sector, without undergoing democratic electoral scrutiny. In the lexicon disseminated by APHs, citizenship is associated with civil society, portrayed as a realm of goodness, harmony, and efficiency, stripped of the conflicts intrinsic to the political arena. A process of delegitimizing politics occurs, marked by the devaluation of the State’s role and the denial of debates related to the macro-social sphere. This delegitimization is subsequentely followed by a repoliticization. Political action is directed toward individual attitudes based on the logic of entrepreneurship and in cooperation with public and private powers. The result is a depoliticized citizenship, detached from broader, global deliberations. By applying the concept of APH, the research allow us to conclude that the selection of particular meanings is carried out via a pedagogy of hegemony. Worldviews gain strength to the extent that a social group succeeds in promoting them as universal and detached from particular interests. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
