Implied Author, Overall Consideration, and Subtext of "Desiree's Baby"
This essay explores how to infer from a text the image of the implied author. It examines Kate Chopin's "Desiree's Baby" (1893), which has been widely regarded as an indictment of racism but which an "overall consideration" of the implied author's choices will lead us to see as a racist text. Through the interaction of various details in the text, the implied author suggests three racist dichotomies: (1) white characters' nondiscrimination versus black characters' discrimination, (2) positive slavery under white masters versus negative slavery under a black master, and (3) superior whites versus inferior blacks. This implied racist stance reflects the historical context of Chopin's personal experiences, but it contrasts with the quite different racial stances of the implied authors of some other Chopin narratives with different thematic designs. The complexity of the narratives under the name "Kate Chopin" offers an opportunity not only to gain a better understanding of the concept of implied author but also to clarify the relations (connections as well as disparities) among textual, intertextual, and extratextual evidence in literary interpretation in general.LiteratureA&HCI4ARTICLE2285-3113

Kate Chopin
Kate Chopin was thirty-four years old and the widow of a near-bankrupt cotton factor from an old southern family when she returned to her native St. louis with her six children. Her first books and stories gained her national celebrity as an outstanding local-color writer, but all tht chaned in 1899 with the publicaiton of "The Awakening". Its sympathetic portrayal of a young woman's adulterous love affair and the unprecedented candor of its heroine's erotic longings shocked hte popular taste of the day - and its author, condemed and ostracized, died soon after. In the 1960's, as the women's movemetn was taking shape, a new generation discovered "The Awakening" and made Kate Chopin its standard-bearer. Her story, fully told for the first a fascinating and ocmplex woman who not only lived by her own rules, but whose lide was the basis for the legendary fiction she createdThe conven-school-eduacted daughter of a prosperous Missouri family with Confederate sympathies, she married at twenty and eventually settled, with her husband, Oscar, among his people in Louisiana's Cane River country. There Kate Chopin's unconventional temperament and personal flamboyance asserted themselves, stirring up gossip and debate among the locasl, but it was also in the sensual atmosphere of Louisiana, with its warm, dark nights, that the young wife, who had married early and possible withough passions, discovered her own deep desires. Oscar Chopin's untimley death from malaria in 1882 - a crisis described in a gripping dtail - brought the family's deteriorating financial circumstances to a hear; but it also vecame the even that would direct the rest of Kate Chopin's life and writingRejecting the future that might have been expected of her as the pious guardian of her husband's memory, she would later embark on a scandalous affair with a married man, a realationship revealed here for the first time and one that ultimatley propelled her ourt of the conventiaonal life and into the world of the avant-garde writer who finally went too far. On her return to St. Louis, Kate Chopin transformed the passion of her Louisiaa days into the sensual rhthms of prose and into realistic stories about other passionate, discontented women who wanted to break free. Endowed with vigorous energy and determination, she wrote over one hundred short stories, novels, plays, reviews, essays, and poems in her fourteen years as a writer - a formidable literary output that mde her one of the most prolific writers of her era. For such a major figure, a major biography was needed. Seven years in the writing, "Kate Chopin" is a work of immense scholarshi
Born-Globals and Culturally Proximate Markets
Link to a related website: https://research-repository.griffith.edu.au/bitstream/10072/44791/1/77717_1.pdf, Open Access via UnpaywallIn this paper we focus on the differences between born-globals and older firms. We compare whether cultural proximity is important for born-globals and older firms and whether international or technological knowledge drives their internationalisation. In addition, we compare whether born-globals and older firms are proactive or reactive in their choice of culturally proximate markets. Our research suggests that born-globals tend to internationalise rapidly into markets ready to adopt their technology. This is driven by the need to establish a revenue stream (cash flow) as quickly as possible. These born-globals usually seek larger advanced economies, which are often culturally similar (proximate) and offer economies of scale; reducing risk for inexperienced firms. Indeed, born-global firms are more willing than older firms to move from culturally proximate to culturally non-proximate markets very quickly. Utilising an abductive approach based on case studies, our findings show that born-globals use their technological knowledge and networks and are proactive when they enter culturally non-proximate markets. Born-globals must assess a new market for its ability to provide a revenue stream very soon after entry. If the culturally proximate market does not offer this, then they will leverage technological knowledge and networks to move rapidly into nearby non-proximate markets where they perceive better opportunities for building a customer base or new funding alternatives to sustain the firm in their early foreign market forays. Our research significantly extends theory in highlighting that born-globals rely more on technological experience and display proactive behaviour more than older firms which can draw on previous international experience.Susan Freeman, Kate Hutchings, Sylvie Chett

Pomoc nebo překážka? Pohledy zaměstnance na použitelnosti elektronických záznamů (EPR) pro plánování péče o lidi s demencí v pečovatelských domech: komparativní případová studie
Charles University Faculty of Humanities STUDIA DLOUHOVĚKOSTI Pomoc nebo překážka? Pohledy zaměstnance na použitelnosti elektronických záznamů (EPR) pro plánování péče o lidi s demencí v pečovatelských domech: komparativní případová studie Summary of the dissertation Author: Mgr. Kate Shiells Supervisor: Doc. MUDr. Budou uskutečněny celkem čtyři případové studie čtyř pečovatelských domů v Belgii, České Republice, Španělsku a Anglii. Výzkum má dvě součásti: (i) zaprvé bude provedeno kvalitativní šetření mezi zaměstnanci ('contextual inquiry' ) s cílem zjistit í problémy spojené s využíváním EPR. Následně uskutečníme obsahovou analýzu získaných dat ('qualitatative...Charles University Faculty of Humanities Longevity Studies More of a hindrance than a help? Staff perspectives on the usability of Electronic Patient Records for planning and delivering dementia care in nursing homes: a multiple case study Summary of the dissertation Author: Mgr. Kate Shiells Supervisor: Doc. MUDr. Iva Holmerová, Ph.D. Prague 2020 2 Abstract Nursing homes are more frequently turning to the electronic patient record (EPR) to manage documentation. Potential benefits associated with EPR include the storage of longitudinal information, interoperability, and improved documentation quality. However, the uptake of EPR in nursing homes has varied considerably across countries, which has been associated with the incompatibility of some EPR systems with this environment. Furthermore, the suitability of EPR for planning dementia care is largely unknown. This study aims to produce recommendations for the future development of EPR systems for use in the assessment and care planning for people with dementia in nursing homes. Case studies of three nursing homes using EPR in Belgium, Czech Republic, and Spain were conducted. There are two elements to the study: (i) the contextual inquiry method is employed to explore usability issues with different types of end users. Data is analysed using qualitative...Doktorský obor Studia dlouhověkostiPh.D. - Longevity StudiesFakulta humanitních studiíFaculty of Humanitie

A model of rapid knowledge development: The smaller born-global firm
Link to a related website: https://research-repository.griffith.edu.au/bitstream/10072/34906/1/65140_1.pdf, Open Access via UnpaywallExisting models of the internationalization process have not captured the important phenomenon of accelerated international growth of born-global firms, which led Johanson and Vahlne (2003) to revise their model. However, the revised network model falls short of explaining rapid internationalization of firms. While they indicate a “specific relationship development process” used by born-global managers, Johanson and Vahlne (2003) still suggest the existence of an incremental learning and “responsive” model, which is based on pre-existing relationships. We extend current theory in arguing that born-global managers can use both pre-existing and newly formed relationships, to quickly and proactively develop new knowledge for rapid commercialization of their products. Proactive, advanced relationship-building capability is based around locating partners with technological knowledge with a view to ensuring ease of sharing knowledge. We explore the development of trust and inter-firm partnerships in established and newly formed networks and how these lead to tacit knowledge, absorptive capacity and new knowledge generation. While Johanson and Vahlne (2003) emphasize “market specific experience and operation experience” we emphasize “technological experience”. The reason that knowledge sharing is able to proceed quickly is that the shared “technological knowledge” allows rapid transfer and development of new knowledge and the drive to commercialize a product before a competitor, promotes the “mutual need” (co-dependency) to act quickly, characteristic of technology-based industries, which face rapid change. As an outcome of the born-global manager's ability to locate new partners through existing networks, new international links may be quickly developed, with internationalization being an outcome, but not necessarily a driver of behaviour in smaller born-global supply chains.Susan Freeman, Kate Hutchings, Miria Lazaris, Suzanne Zyngie
